WW1 Anzacs at Gallipoli. (1 Viewer)

Ron,

I'm interested as to what's been said that makes you think this. I've re-read this thread and can't find anything to suggest that there is that feeling from any Brit and or Commonwealth member.

I don't believe it and, not wishing to speak for anyone else, but, I'm pretty sure no one else does either.

Simon

Simon, I agree with you but I can also see where this one is going!

I think the same sentiment was raised in a thread from a couple of months ago where passions got very inflamed and was deleted. As a Yank, I don't really see much to it.

I see what Jeff is talking about but it will not go down that same path, I can assure you. I will be keeping a close watch on this thread.

You and I will disagree on this one - this was Montgomery's Plan. Eisenhower had to play the politician all the time to keep all the egos from all the allies working together. So - Yes - Eisenhower as SHAPE Commander was superior to Montgomery - but to think anybody could tell Montgomery he was wrong is crazy. We had our egos too with Patton.

Not saying you believe this OZ - but, I get the sense that some of our British/Commonwealth Friends believe they won the war by themselves and us Americans were just along for the ride?

Ron

I have studied the second world war from the age of about ten.Never once have i thought that.:(

Rob

I think the sad thing is a lot of younger Americans don't know anything about WW2. My son who is in 10th grade said in history class WW2 was just glanced over. Most emphasis was placed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.I mean WW2 was about the most important event in mankind's history.
I thought Flags Of Our Fathers would be a blockbuster but nobody went to see it. It's like people don't care anymore.

I think if we do one thing as a group, Toy Soldier Collectors should try to use our hobby to educate young people about important historical events, and I agree with JRSTEEL that World War II is the single most important event in the last 500 years or so.

Ron, if you read some of the relevant history you'll find that Eisenhower overuled Montgomery on several occassions - he was the boss afterall.

As for your other comment, I have never gained the impression from any person that the British/Commonwealth forces won the war by themselves and the Americans were along for the ride.

In fact, the impression I've gained over the years from a number of American movies (and a few Americans) is that it's the other way round :) Which is why I sometimes get on my soapbox to try and get it through some peoples heads that the only way to beat the Nazi's was through co-operation. Which is where Eisenhower made such a terrific contribution by keeping the allies together - mostly ;)

I do agree with you there is a big Hollywood Slant in American War Movies - And alot of times people over here forget there was more to WWII than just where the Americans fought.

I saw a great program on the History Channel on the Burma Campaign in WWII - in your neighborhood! Really interesting that Japan made to India during the War.

Anyway - yes, we do agree history should not be written in Hollywood. :D

Well I for one firmly believe that if New Zealand hadn't stepped into World War II when we did, all of you would have been speaking German or Japanese! I don't know where you would have been if it wasn't for us Kiwis...

(Thats us..just down there at the botom of the map near Antartica....just right of West Island)

You are absolutely right. If it wasn't for the incredible job done by Major Keith Mallory of the Long Range Desert Group in the Guns of Navarone and Force 10 from Navarone, we wouldn't have stood a chance! (Guys, I am obviously joking, ask anyone on this forum who knows me (including Vandilay, who was kind enough to provide me with a copy of an excellent book on the Barce Raid), and they will tell you nobody respects the Kiwis in the LRDG and the rest of the ANZAC forces more than I do.)

With the greatest respect to you Kiwi and the wonderful contribution of New Zealand in WW2 that we all really appreciate, the reason i'm not speaking German is because of the RAF in the battle of Britain my friend.

Hi Ron,

Sorry I don't know a David Cuncliffe. The only Prime Minister called David I know of was David Langey (in the 80's) and he died a while ago. Your David Cuncliffe must have been a foreign diplomat if you and he worked together in DC.

Cheers

Yes - Actually David Cunliffe was the Congressional Affiars Officer for the New Zealand Embassy back in the early 1990's - we worked together on the South Pacific Task Force that was formed in the US House of Representatives. He is I believe #17 in ranking in your Parliament and is a Minister in the Cabinet of your Prime Minister. Great Guy.

I plan to come see him sometime next year and spend some time in NZ - North and South Island. It has been a long time since I have been back there.

Ron

Hello all, first post.

I'm a newbie to this hobby, was wondering if there was a update regarding this series of K & C ANZAC's.

Twould be grand to see some mounted troopers from WW1, Camel Corps and Light Horse, NZ and Aust.

Cheers CKS1.

Welcome aboard CKS1! Sorry to tell you that the Gallipoli series is only wishful thinking at this point. K&C are doing WWI in cronological order, and are still back in 1914, so I expect its going to take a couple of years to get to Gallipoli.
