WW1 Pic Of the Day (2 Viewers)

Observer, pilot, and Bristol Fighter F2B aircraft, Serial B1146, of No. 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. The pilot (left) is Captain (Capt) Ross Macpherson Smith, MC and bar, DFC and two bars. Capt Hurley visited No. 1 Squadron on the 25 and 28 February 1918 and this photograph was probably taken on one of these days.

Machines of the Australian Flying Corps photographed from inside a hangar. Bristol fighter F.2B serial B1128; two Martinsydes and B.E.2 in line-up.

Worried that the aircraft are incorrectly identified and Al will correct me!{sm4}

Fine job on the ID's, Jack. A very nice picture, as well. Very sharp and clear. -- Al

There is a diorama in there somewhere I am sure of it!!

Good to know about the IDs! Thanks!

I am in Canberra doing some research at the Australian War Memorial (thank you to the Australian taxpayers on the Forum!) and was disappointed to see the WW1 galleries were closed due to preparations for next year. The aircraft hall is still open and this is one of the jewels in the crown. Not my photograph though - it is now suspended and the light is quite low.

Still from the British film "The Battle of the Somme". The image is part of a sequence purportedly showing British soldiers moving forward through wire at the start of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. Although this scene is now generally considered to have been staged for the camera, possibly at a Trench Mortar School well behind the lines, this image and the film sequence from which it is derived, have regularly been used to represent British troops "going over the top" at the start of an assault on the Western Front.
