A very good movie indeed.....I saw the movie yrs ago and cannot recall ever seeing in on our crappy free to air TV.,,,or...our useless Fox pay TV...plenty of rubbish on both TV stations ... but no quality movies ......out of every 100 movies Fox shows about two are watchable ( Not including the Classic Channel....you get a decent movie there...)...hope you have better luck with your TV stations......cheers TomB

I remember seeing this one many yrs ago and it is a good movie. Have to wonder now, why there were RN frigates sailing up and down Chinese rivers in 1949. Seems kind of "out of place." Chris

An rare bulldust story from the Brit flim makers.....not too often the Brits follow the style of Hollywood fantasies but it was a good story and movie without the false heroics of John Wayne to make it unbelievable ....my opinion...cheers TomB

John W made some good movies...but I dont think he served in the war like a lot of other actor of the time..Jimmy Stewart for one...and we cannot forget Audie Murphy...talking about Audie...I thought he did a good job in "The Quiet American "..a bit different from his cowboy roles...and I thought the movie of his service career (To Hell and Back) was believable......hope they dont stuff that up with a remake...cheers TomB

Thanks for the video info....had a feeling it was a true story but could not remember as it was a fair time since I had seen the movie (when first released) and I did think I had read something about it in the newspaper but as this is the first instant the Amethyst has been mentioned since then I was'nt sure ....so it was not the Brits doing a Hollywood Fantasy......great......from memory the main actor also served in WW2........cheers TomB

Wayne made a conscious decision to not enlist based on several factors. At the time of Pearl Harbor, Wayne was already 34.5 years old, was married and had 4 children to support. His marraige was also not the most stable, so he was concerned about that, as well. He was also beginning to experience real success in the movies. While not the most patriotic of decisions, I think his decision to not enlist was quite understandable. JMO. -- Al

J Wayne had his choice and made it...Jimmy Stewart...Tyrone Power...Robert Taylor...Eddie Albert and countless other actors had their choice and made it....it did not seem to hurt their career...in fact it helped Audie Murphy start a career....I like JW's movie"s.......and know he is a national hero in America.....but his patriotism appeared to have been put on hold ..and as he was an American... that ...surprised me...my humble opinion....TomB

I love the Duke - He was the only American actor who could do a decent Asian in the Conqueror...;)

Seriously, the other day, I was trying to share with my 10 year old kid about John Wayne.

Me (waxing lyrically)- I love John Wayne
Mykid - Yeah, he's great.

Me - You know John Wayne?
Mykid - Yeah, he was the Tooth Fairy.

Me - what are you talking about?
Mykid- Dwayne, Dwayne Johnson.

I didn't make up this conversation. Honestly.

^&grin That's a good story. You should now show your son westerns with John Wayne in them and show him the difference between a Duke and a Rock.:wink2:^&grin -- Al
