YANKEES Clinch AL East! (1 Viewer)

I just watched the Yankee,s level the series good game slowly catching on,one thing i noticed they do ALOT of spitting,WTF.One bloke spat about seven times before he started to bat, spit sitting on his goatie..............:D

I guess they are nervous, I thought it was a good game and now we are down to a best of 5! I'm glad the Yankee's got back on track!:)

Another close, well pitched game. Again the NYY manage to win without their lineup hitting well. Even A-Rod is now struggling. Hope the hitters find their rhythm before they have to face Lee again. Going to be a dogfight. Go NYY! -- lancer

You guys make me laugh because back and forth we go. Seems like same discussion, different day.

Tonight should be interesting and not just because of Pedro vs. the Yankees and so forth from past history but because Pedro pitched well in his last outing.

It's obviously an important game for the Yankees but it's not the end of the world either if they lose since several teams have come back to win the WS being down 2-0. It is obviously harder to do that if you lose the first two at home and to my recollection only the 1985 Royals and the 1986 Mets did that.

Also the 1996 New York Yankees.

Knew there must be others. Well, it doesn't matter as it's 1-1 and very manegeable for the Yankees now. Hope they stick it to the Phillies and those fans.

Absent rain outs, tonight is the game that will decide this series. If Pettitte pitches well, and the Yankees beat Cole Hammels, the matchups favor the Yanks winning in 6 or 7 games. If the Yanks win tonight, CC will beat Blanton in game 4 (Yanks 3-1), Lee will beat Gaudin in game 5 (Yanks 3-2), and then a fully rested A.J. Burnett will beat Pedro again in game 6, or, if necessary, CC on short rest will beat Hammels in game 7.

The one factor that can change the matchups for better or worse is rain outs. If there is a rain delay before game 4, then it will be CC versus Lee in game 4, and Lee will win again (Series even at 2-2). Then a fully rested A.J. Burnett will face Blanton in game 5 (Yanks lead 3-2), Pettitte faces Pedro in game 6 (pick em), then, if necessary CC versus Lee (both on short rest) [pick em] or CC (on short rest) versus Hammels (on full rest) [CC should win] in game 7. If there is a second rain delay after game 4, it would be CC versus Lee (Phillies win) in game 7.

So the Yanks better pray there are zero or only 1 rain delays, because 2 rain delays means Cliff Lee 3 times, and I don't see the Yankees beating him as bad as they looked against him in game one.

Yanks took care of business tonight. The bats (with the exception of Cano) really heated up. The bullpen (with the exception of Phil Hughes, whom I don't expect to see for the rest of the series unless a game in no longer in doubt) looked better.

I like the remaining pitching matchups in all but game 5 . . . as long as there are no rainouts!

Yes excellent game, I especially liked AR's HR off the camera!:D

Pettitte broke the Phillies back in game 3 with the first NYY WS rbi by a pitcher in 45 years. You could just see the fire go out of Hamels. Now for the short rest pitching parade. Hope it works out and that the NYY bats have finally awakened from their post-season snooze. -- lancer

I think Gerardi can cost himself and the Yanks the World Series if he pitches Burnett on short rest against Lee in game 5.

Assuming that CC beats Blanton tonight (the smart money says he will, but anything can happen on any given night) the Yankees will take a 3-1 series lead into game 5. Nobody is going to beat Lee the way he is pitching, so why waste your second best pitcher on short rest in a no-win situation?

Run Gaudin out there and take the loss, knowing that you return to Yankee Stadium up 3-2 with a fully rested Burnett against Pedro in game 6 (the Yanks should win) and, if necessary CC on 3 days rest against Hamels in game 7 (the Yanks should win).

Not a bad idea. Perhaps Gaudin, of whom not much is expected, can pull off a performance sort of like a guy named Larsen did in '56, also when not much was expected.:D At any rate, I agree that Burnett should be given full rest and started in game 6. CC and Andy are then set for game 7. Who knows, it is still raining. -- lancer

What a game tonight!! Talk about any given day . . . Joe Blanton pitched well and held the Yankees down. CC gave up that solo home run with two outs in the 7th, leaving the game with only a one run lead, 4-3. At the end of 7, it was anybody's game.

Then Joba comes on in the bottom of the 8th, blows away the two dangerous hitters he has to face with 96 mph fastballs, and goes up 1-2 on the light hitting Ruiz, again with his fastball. He then tries to throw 2 straight sliders in the dirt, and gets himself to a 3-2 count. Ruiz knew he had to throw the fastball, and hit it out, tying the game up at 4-4. Advantage Phillies.

The Phillies bring in Brad Lidge, who (after a shaky regular season) hadn't given up a run in the postseason. He promptly gets out Matsui and Jeter, and has Damon down 0-2. Damon fouls off a bunch of pitches, levels the count, and then on the 10th or 11th pitch of the at bat singles.

In a savvy veterans move, he steals second, knowing that, as the shift is on for Teixeira, if the third baseman covers second, he can steal third if he can out run him, which he does. Lidge continues to melt down, hitting Teixeira.

Then the much maligned A-Rod comes to the plate, with only 1 hit in the World Series (the two run homer yesterday). A-Rod sees that Lidge can't throw the slider, because he consistently bounces it in the dirt, and if it gets away Damon will score from third. He also knows that the Phillies have been pitching him inside, so he looks for an inside fastball and doubles one-hop of the wall, Yankees up 5-4.

Then Posada, who, despite sometimes shaky defense (like dropping the pitch that allowed Howard to steal second), has always wielded a big bat, comes up with the biggest clutch hit of this postseason, the two-RBI single that gave the Yankees a 3 run lead.

Mariano comes in, for an easy 3 batter save (his 11th World Series Save and 39th Post Season save). The Yankees, who have won 10 of the 11 games they set out to win this post season, lead the series 3-1.

If Damon doesn't have that huge 9th inning hit and 2 stolen bases, and A-Rod and Jorge don't come through, however, the Yanks are pitching Phil Coke against the top of the Phillies order in the 9th. Not an inning I would have wanted to watch.

I can't wait to see what happens in game 5! Go Yankees!!!:cool:

Great ab by Damon and heady move in taking third. Most players would have played it safe.

Rivera showed the difference between him and every other reliever. No messing around: 8 pitches and have a nice evening.

Terrific game. Typically, it had me cheering and cursing in equal amounts. I thought Philly had the advantage when they tied the game. I was cringing at the thought of the bottom of the 9th in a tie game. That 9th inning scoring binge was as unlikely as anything I've seen. Lidge had 2 out and 2 strikes. All he needed was that last strike and he just couldn't get it. Then to see Damon take 3rd because of the Philly shift on Teixeira, well, it was a shock. The stars aligned (literally) and A-Rod swung the executioners axe. Posada then signed the death notice to make it official. Rivera comes in, buries the corpse and it's on to game 5. Going to be real interesting to see the pitching match-up. Can the Phillies come back after losing 2 games in such heartbreaking ways? Lee will tell the tale. The Phillies are fighters and game 5 is going to be a classic. Go NYY! -- lancer

Well, game five went about the way I expected. Congrats to the Phillies, though, once again, a timely hit could have turned it to a NYY win. I am a bit pessimistic about the way the pitching rotation shakes out for NYY in game 6 & 7. I like Andy and would have no problem starting him in game 6 on regular rest. Short rest is going to be a big question in his case, but now there is no choice. CC hasn't been all that sharp and another start on short rest won't help. The plus side for NYY is that the Phillies have starter problems in game 7 too. Game 6 will be a toss up, possible advantage to Philly, because of Martinez. If a game 7 occurs, will be advantage NYY because a tired CC will be better than whoever the Phillies can start. For NYY it will be essential that someone steps up and hits (read Teixeira) to support A-Rod, Damon, and Jeter. The TEAM has not hit very in the WS so far. Looks like a 7 game barn-burner. Go NYY! -- lancer

I think Girardi has put the team into a bit of a pickle because now both starters are going on short rest and CC hasn't exactly lit up the WS. I thought this before Game 5 so it's not a second guess but I would have saved Burnett for Game 6 and then you would have Pettite on full rest or CC on short rest, with Pettite immediately available if necessary.

NOW THAT WAS A GREAT ENDING!!!!

The Yankees rock! Philly gave a great World Series! My kind of season ender.

Very very happy here! Now we just need the Sounders to do the same in MLS and we will be really happy.

Sadly, I can't take my father to the parade in the canyon of heroes, but I am definitely taking my son Friday!
