YANKEES Clinch AL East! (1 Viewer)

In all honesty, guys, lets not get ahead of ourselves. Winning the 1st game of a series doesn't mean much. The Yanks need to put it to the twins tonight, and the Red Sox aren't in any trouble if they can win tonight with Beckett.

A.J. Burnett has no playoff experience, whatsoever. However, with the Yanks winning game 1, and Molina behind the dish, he is facing a lot less pressure than he could have faced. If he pitches well tonight, and the Yanks win, they can go far into this playoff, as Sabathia got the monkey off his back in game 1, and Pettitte is one of the winningest pitchers in post-season history.

I know Beckett has been hurt this season, but ole Curt "Bloody Sock" Schilling managed to win some big playoff games with an injury, and Beckett is the same type of playoff tested ace.

I still see this coming down to a rematch of 2004 in for the pennant.
I learned my lesson about "sure things" during the Super Bowl III debacle. I haven't allowed myself to breath easily for my teams until the final out or final gun since then. Still, I like the NYY chances for the WS (but I will still be holding my breath). -- Al

Debacle? I guess it depends on your perspective ;)
Truer words have never been spoken. That "debacle" changed evrything for me. UP is DOWN. DAY is NIGHT. Next, someone will tell me the Colt's are leaving Baltimore. The world is a cruel place. In case you can't tell, I have never recovered from that game and I think Bubba was right.:( -- Al

Hi Guys,

I am sure that the Red Soxs Fans who revelled in the misory that was being a Yankee fan the last time they managed to win it all in the post season will certainly rear up and make all kinds of noise so please let some of us enjoy the stunned looks and silence coming from their mouths for a minute or two.:D

They shouldnt be written off of course but lets just face the facts about their pitching staff. Making the comparison to Shilling is interesting but I think a little out there. Sure Beckett is a great pitcher but he isnt as seasoned as Shilling or as good as Lester IMO and with all of his injuries who can say how he will perform. But lets not sell the whole show to them just yet and let the games be played. I think Anaheim has had enough of the Post season Blues from the hands of the Sox so perhaps they will due the unthinkable and sweap the series. I for one would enjoy this nearly as much as the Yankees winning it all. However there is still a lot of baseball to play and as we all know anything that can happen will.

Still I am enjoying the stunned silence from all of my buddies in the red sox nation.

I thought that what the Irsays did to Baltimore was far worse than anything the Jets did. Terrible. Excuse my lack of knowledge about Bubba but what did he say. I just remembered an old joke about Bubba and Nixon. Can't repeat it here of course  but very funny.

Agreed about Irsay. I still stick pins in my voodoo doll of him on a regular basis, just because. My reference to Bubba Smith were regarding the statements he made about the game being fixed. How else do you explain Shula sticking with a very sub-par Morall for so long, considering who was on the bench, chomping at the bit to get in? Shula must have had the Jets. -- lancer

What a game!!!! That was one of the most exciting playoff games I've ever seen. Burnett gives up one run on three hits (and that after retiring the first two batters of the inning), and Gerardi looks like a genius for starting Molino behind the dish. Then Hughes melts down and gives the Twins a 3-1 lead in the 8th.

A-Rod (who drove in Jeter for the Yanks first run) hits the game-tying 2 run homer against the Twins closer Nathan in the bottom of the 9th, and the exciting part of the game is only just beginning.

Just for the record, I started a thread where I indicated A-Rod had earned his pinstripes with the walk off home run in the 17th inning of the 10th game against the Red Sox this season, and a couple of other Yankee fans indicated he would need to do it in the post season to really earn his pinstripes. Well, after getting the monkey off his back with 3 two-out RBI hits this series, I would say he beat that poor monkey to death with the game tying homer tonight!

Then the Yanks have Gardiner on 3rd with only one out, after he steals second and moves to third on an errant pick-off attempt, and Damon lines into a double play to end the 10th.

In the eleventh, Demaso Marte imploads, and gives up a double and two singles to the two left handed batters he faced. I say a double and two singles because Mauer doubled down the line, and the idiot umpire called it a foul, and he then singled. That bad call may very well have saved the Yankees bacon. At the very least, presuming things played out the way they did the Twins would have scored one run, and Texiera's homer would have tied the game and passed the baton to A-Rod.

But instead, the Yanks put in a fireballing Rookie, Robertson, who gives up a hit to load the bases with nobody out, and then on two consecutive pitches induces a line out to first and ground out to first which forced the runner at home. The next Twin hits a can of corn to Gardiner in center, and the Yanks are out of a bases loaded no-out jam without giving up a run.

Mark Texiera then hits a laser beam homer just over the wall and just fair inside the left field foul pole, and the Yankees have a 2-0 series lead.

The Yanks have played 6 post season games in the Metrodome over the years, and are 6-0. I am fairly confident that with Pettitte, the all time leader in post-season starts and wins on the mound against Carl Pavano (who will probably fake an injury between now and Sunday), this series will end Sunday night.

Oh, and George, your Sox are down 4-1 in the 8th . . . like I said, be careful what you wish for . . . ;)

OH Happy Day indeed!

There was wailing and nashing of teeth in Red Sox Nation!!!

I am so enjoying the stunned silence from all of my friends and family who are wondering why they root for Boston right now. And Yes Louis A-rod has earned his stripes and I couldnt be happier!

An excellent evening for the Yankees, also do I detect a tear in my eye for

Boston......:D

Lets hope we can quickly put the Twins away, they certainly made the

game interesting.

I am a NYY fan that would like to repeat LB's words of caution. Very happy that NYY are up 2-0 and Sox down 0-2, but, I do remember a time when these same stats led to history making reversals. I'll crow when the last out is recorded and the NYY are WS champions. -- lancer

What a fun day for me today: I've got pre-game shows all morning, Giants vs. Raiders at 1:00 p.m., then Yankees vs. Twins at 7:10 p.m.

Any Yankee fan would have to admit that this year's team has the swagger and character of Joe Torres early Yankee teams. And with a clutch Arod now in play, we could have a celebration. For once in some time, we have flamers on the starting staff and bullpen. I believe some 20 Twins have gone down on strikes in 2 games...So far, so good. Michael

And all of Red Sox Nation wept!

Defeat snatched from the Jaws of Victory.

Amazing to see their bull pen fall apart in a rather spectacular way. To say I enjoyed the game would be an understatement.

:) Yes quite a nice day, the Giants destroyed Oakland, I hope they get their

program back up and running again soon.

I watch the Angles/Boston game and it was a great finish. The last Boston

batter adjusted his gloves after every pitch.....and I suspect he will be

adjusting them from now until spring training again!:D

Its always nice to see Boston put to sleep till next year!:)

Now if the Yankees can sweep the twins tonight.......:)

YANKEES SWEEP!

Way to go!

On to AL.......then Series, and.......:)

Yeah Baby!!!!!

I do love a good post season series should be a lot of fun to watch down the line to the Series!

The Yankees Rock!

Its a great day . . . but we are only 3/11ths of the way to our goal of number 27.

I am amazed at how far the Raiders have sunk. The Giants played their second string quarterback for 2+ quarters, they played their third string running back for the final quarter, and they still scored 44 points. And frankly, if Moss hadn't made an incredibly stupid attempt at fielding a bouncing punt and the run, and if the ref's hadn't screwed up the call on the subsequent fumble two plays later, the Giants would have had another shut out.

Congratulations to the NYY. A very game Twins team made this a closer series than the sweep would indicate. The series also highlighted that pitching in the post-season is paramount. The Twins did a good job of keeping the scores low and it was only A-rod that kept the series going in the right direction. To get past the Angels the NYY are going to have to be a little more hitterish and keep the pitching sharp, as well. It is going to be fun. -- lancer

Congrats to the Yanks. I suspected going into the series that the Twins would have a hard time. They played well enough to win a couple games, just made too many silly mistakes. Hard to believe really...this is a team that got to the postseason by doing all the little things right. To be honest, a few weeks back we never thought we'd even be here. Our World Series was in the Dome last Tuesday against the Tigers.

If I have one beef, it was with the announcers. I grow weary of their 'adoration' for players like Jeter. He's a great player. I don't dispute that at all. But to rave about how 'smart' he is for throwing home to catch Punto off of third? Come on! Any player worth his salt would look up, realize that he has no play at first, and see that someone blundered too far past third. The throw home is one that should be made even in pee wee league. Another time there was a runner on second and the hit went to A-Rod at third, who looked the runner back and threw to first. Jeter was commended for 'wisely' covering third so the runner couldn't advance. Come on! Who wouldn't!

This isn't a knock on Jeter, who has shown time and time again how good he is. Praise him when it's warrented...not for routine plays!

Hi Peter,

You raise a great point about the announcers. The ones from ESPN drive me insane with that sort of stuff. Morgan and his sidekick are always doing this. They are susposed to be neutral since they dont represent The YES Network or NESN etc and yet they do it all the time and no one complains. I can certainly get on the band wagon if the announcers are working for the team a certain player is on but when they are from TBS or where-ever they really need to take it down a notch and not root openly for either team. I understand its exciting when a guy makes a good heads up play but dont sit there and rave about one side or the other for the rest of the game, thats what the fans are susposed to do.

Sorry the Twins didnt go further and am sure they will have a shot at it in the future. But I am very excited about the way it went and I am looking forward to the next series of games it should be very exciting. I just hope that the Yankees pitching can continue the way they have been playing especially since Anaheim is not a team to be taken lightly.

All the best

Dave
