What a game!!!! That was one of the most exciting playoff games I've ever seen. Burnett gives up one run on three hits (and that after retiring the first two batters of the inning), and Gerardi looks like a genius for starting Molino behind the dish. Then Hughes melts down and gives the Twins a 3-1 lead in the 8th.
A-Rod (who drove in Jeter for the Yanks first run) hits the game-tying 2 run homer against the Twins closer Nathan in the bottom of the 9th, and the exciting part of the game is only just beginning.
Just for the record, I started a thread where I indicated A-Rod had earned his pinstripes with the walk off home run in the 17th inning of the 10th game against the Red Sox this season, and a couple of other Yankee fans indicated he would need to do it in the post season to really earn his pinstripes. Well, after getting the monkey off his back with 3 two-out RBI hits this series, I would say he beat that poor monkey to death with the game tying homer tonight!
Then the Yanks have Gardiner on 3rd with only one out, after he steals second and moves to third on an errant pick-off attempt, and Damon lines into a double play to end the 10th.
In the eleventh, Demaso Marte imploads, and gives up a double and two singles to the two left handed batters he faced. I say a double and two singles because Mauer doubled down the line, and the idiot umpire called it a foul, and he then singled. That bad call may very well have saved the Yankees bacon. At the very least, presuming things played out the way they did the Twins would have scored one run, and Texiera's homer would have tied the game and passed the baton to A-Rod.
But instead, the Yanks put in a fireballing Rookie, Robertson, who gives up a hit to load the bases with nobody out, and then on two consecutive pitches induces a line out to first and ground out to first which forced the runner at home. The next Twin hits a can of corn to Gardiner in center, and the Yanks are out of a bases loaded no-out jam without giving up a run.
Mark Texiera then hits a laser beam homer just over the wall and just fair inside the left field foul pole, and the Yankees have a 2-0 series lead.
The Yanks have played 6 post season games in the Metrodome over the years, and are 6-0. I am fairly confident that with Pettitte, the all time leader in post-season starts and wins on the mound against Carl Pavano (who will probably fake an injury between now and Sunday), this series will end Sunday night.
Oh, and George, your Sox are down 4-1 in the 8th . . . like I said, be careful what you wish for . . .
