your favorite war movie (1 Viewer)

A Bridge Too Far, Attack Force Z, Band of Brothers, The Longest Day (I just watched today).....the list could continue for a while.

Well it is hard to pick just one, but I'll mention one I really enjoy that has not been mentioned yet...Behind the Lines.

The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far.............I know, not the best special effects and some inaccuracies but two of the best films about war. Even though I was with the 101st as a grunt, I am still in awe of the balls needed to do a glider landing or jump into hostile fire. Would really like to see a movie about the 503rd who jumped onto Corregidor and took the island. A 500 foot or less jump....what balls!

My top five;

1.) Saving Private Ryan
2.) Stalingrad 1992 version
3.) A Bridge too Far
4.) Cross of Iron
5.) Kellys Heroes

There is a FANTASTIC chinese war movie that was just released on video (over here in China) a month or two ago called "Assembly." It takes place in 1948 and has some simply incredible battle scenes in it. Well worth it if you can get a copy. I would rank it up there second only to Saving Private Ryan perhaps in terms of the quality of the battle scenes...

Most of the other movies that are my favorites have already been mentioned, except for my absolute favorite war movie...Black Hawk Down (Ridley Scott makes the best historical movies, period, I think. Gladiator, The Duelists, Kingdom of Heaven)

The Japanese film RAN is also very good and I don't think mentioned.

I like the
Alamo (john wayne) just love the final battle even if it is 100% inaccurate
The Vikings
Waterloo
Gettysburg
glory
kingdom of heaven
Troy
spartacus

Has the dvd for assembly appeared yet with english subtitles?

Just viewed the trailer for Assembly, looks pretty impressive. Any ideas as to when it will be available in the US?

My fav war film is The long day drying ;)
It about British para fighting German paratroopers on there way back to there lines

Without a doubt - my favorite is :

ATTACK OF THE RAMJAMMER !

A terrific movie of drama and suspense - The last days of the Third Reich the German High Command creates one of the most secret weapons of WWII. So secret that it was lost to history.

The weapon was primarly targeted at Canadian Troops and so effectively - they didn't knew what hit them. At first the Allies didn't believed it existed - but, the growing success of the weapon left its mark on history. ;)

Ron,

You are erring.

The movie you refer to is COUNTER-ATTACK OF THE JAMRAMMERS!!!

It is the story of the courageous French-Canadians who stopped the US invasion at Châteauguay and drove the invaders out of their land :D The stampede that followed was a real jam and the soldiers of Charles-Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry won the knickname of Rammers :p

As far as the weapons used against the Canadians in April 1945 are concerned, they were hold by the German over their heads

Pierre.

I saw the 1969 movie "The Battle of Britain" for the first time today, and it immediately became one of my favorite war movies. In addition to a great cast (Richard Burton, Michael Caine, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Robert Shaw, just to name a few), there were tons of real Spitfires, Hurricanes, Heinkel HE111's and the spanish version of ME109's, a relatively historically accurate plot, and, to top it off, a great scene with the really hot actress playing Richard Burton's character's wife in garter belt, stockings and panties.

I'll have a hunt for it today and let you know.
Found it on ebay with english subtitles for $5 USD, sounds like a good one

Some films in these lists I haven't seen before , so looking forward to a few others as well:)

It's excellent for both it's war scenes and just as a movie in general. No idea when it's available in the US, but if you can't get ahold of it by June, I'll bring you back a copy when I hit the US early this summer. Strange because over here piracy is so rampant they release the DVD BEFORE the move is in theaters...;)

I just saw another movie in a chinese video store tonight that may make my top war movies. Saving Ryan's Privates...wait a minute, that wasn't in the "war" section...

Yes, it has. I got it about a month ago with english subtitles. Funny, because when it was first released it didn't have subtitles but they were playing it in a store and it was so good I sat there and literally watched 20 minutes of it without subtitles with my jaw dropped against my chest. You guys are in for a real treat...
