I love Australia but I wouldn't consider that a proud moment.;)
There's no need to be demeaning here. I never said it was a "proud moment".

I believe that it was however a very proud moment for the black movement in the U.S.

I think that it was admirable that a white Australian put his own sporting career at risk for 2 black Americans especially at a time when many other Americans would not have.

It's nice to think that someone from Down Under played a part in that. :)

:rolleyes:Any way back to the sports person from the north east of England..................

Yep i got the tv on and am looking forward to this fight. We are having a stonking day today arn't we.Looking good for London 2012.Me and the missus have been glued to the Olympics since day one,we want tickets for so many events in London.Rowing,Cycling,Badminton, athletics etc.I see tickets go on sale in 2011 and ticket prices include free transport in London.Going to be a wonderful time in good old London.

I am not being the least bit demeaning, just offering a different perspective. I am all for any person of any different race supporting a statement, at professional risk or otherwise, for a person of a different race. My original and continuing point is that that many would conclude that particular statement was not worthy of such support and it is debatable whether it was even a proud moment for blacks. I know many that were quite offended by it, as were the majority of US whites. If anything, I think it was a set backwards for progress toward racial harmony in this country. All due respects to the intention of the down under gesture however.:)

I just chose "Other (Gee, I'm old)" because the 1936 Games were not on the list. Have we forgotten what a thrill it was, how satisfying it was, to see Jessie Owens drub Hitler in the Games that were supposed to highlight the superiority of the Aryan, and the New Order.

Prost!

I would completely disagree with you as not being a proud moment for African Americans. I was proud of it and you also have to consider the historical context. It was 1968 and it was a symbolic support for Black Power when the USA was in the middle of the struggle for Civil Rights in this country.

With respect, it was about as important to the struggle for civil rights as the black panthers. It would have been great to champion equality but this was perceived by most as a symbol of disloyalty and to that extent, devisive. Black power was a very different thing from racial equality. It is fine for you to be proud of it if you like but that does not make it a useful step in the removal of barriers to racial harmony.

With my point and Spitfrnd's rebuttal, I think that's where this conversation should stop before it goes to where we don't want it to go. I have very different views than his or Gary's (whose post I deleted (sorry)) and we can discuss this offline or Gary and I can discuss it in Chicago but this discussion can lead to no positive end as we each have our views.

Brad, we agree again. Although we disagree relative as to my opinion on the above matter, this discussion was heading straight to the toilet, best that you nipped it in the bud.

Fine but I have no idea why the significance or usefulness of that historical gesture could not or should not be openly discussed. I take no personal interest in this other than to note what impacts I observed as a result. Enjoy your Chicago discussion, hopefully over some appropriate beverage.;)

Well, I agree with Gary, there are just some things that can only go downhill. When I look at some threads sometimes, I say that this can only go downhill from here. Discuss if you wish...

Fair enough. I can see your point of view there. :)

Hey guys

This is what happens when Political B~~~~SH'' Gets put on centre stage :mad:with the Olympics and the efforts of athelets gets over looked.

Sit back chill and watch some great sport like the end of the 10k open swim or the indoor cycling or the windsurfing or the sailing!!!

Save all the Political Mumbo Jumbo for the elections or when it counts!!!

Tony

Absolutely. The cycling, rowing, athletics, boxing have all been fantastic to watch this year.We shouldn't let politics or drug cheats spoil the amazing feats from people all over the world coming together to compete.

Don't forget the speedwalking! I think that goes back to the Ancient Greeks, doesn't it? It was depicted on an urn someplace.

Can't wait for the next Olympiad, when the games get even closer to the true meaning of athletic competition, and baseball and softball are eliminated, and extreme sports are added. Oh boy!

yeah Baron

true true...............and yeah who chooses some of the sports that make it into the Olympics!!!

Just watched BOLT in the 200m.....................OOOHHHH MMMMYYYYYYYYYY GOD! that guys is amazing!!! my PB as a kid was 29.6 the speed that guy got was amazing!!!

Tony

I love the cycling but was sorry to see one event was dropped for BMX,not sure that is an Olympic event. And i'm not sure about football and tennis,we see them all year round, they are huge sports in their own right .
