In the winter of 1993/1994, as I browsed through some toy soldier advertisements, I came across a photograph that caused me to box up and put away the several thousand traditional toy soldiers I had spent my formative years carefully accumulating and displaying. Until this particular day I had been collecting only very static, traditional toy soldiers, like those produced by William Britains for the last 100 years. They were shiny, pretty, looked good set up in marching order, and, frankly, were all I had ever seen up to that point. Everything I knew about toy soldiers was about to change.

The photograph was of a set of toy soldiers unlike anything I had seen up to that point: Teddy Roosevelt, mounted in his uniform as Lt. Colonel of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, with two of his dismounted “Rough Riders” marching behind him. The sculpting of the figures was the first thing that caught my eye: they were properly proportioned and athletic, like living soldiers rather than toys, in comfortable, realistic poses: Teddy slouching in his saddle, and the rough riders marching with their bed rolls slung around them from shoulder to waist. The paint finish also stood out: it was glossy, like traditional toy soldiers, but had the shadowing, dry brushing techniques, and detailed outlining I had only previously seen in prohibitively expensive matt “connoisseur” figures. I had to have it, immediately calling one of the dealers in the advertisement.

First set was Scottish Patrol, EA 01, back in the fall of 2004. I had just returned from Normandy and wanted something to illustrate what I was reading, Max Hastings' book on Normandy. I showed my son and we went back the next day and bought a para set and the rest is history.

mine was the ltd stug , followed by the tommy patrol
which was the set that realy got me interested.

March 2004 London show.I had always stopped and looked at the K&C tables on my way to the Toy Army workshop tables. Each time i looked at K&C they grew on me a little bit more.Mike would always talk to me about the product even though i wasn't buying. Finally at that show i purchased the DD33 3rd Inf patrol and that was it.From that day my other collections took a back seat and i was hooked!.So its all Mike Nevilles fault!!:D

I discovered K&C at Grande Armee in Palm Beach in 04/05. First set I bought was the EA 25 pound gun, cause it seemed like it would best display by itself.

British fusiliers from the AWI.

Me too !

December 2000 - spending Christmas with the girlfriends' family in Bucks County, PA. Had to get out for some alone time

Drove to Washington's Crossing on the Delaware River - look around and went into the gift shop - THERE THEY WERE

A whole table of King and Country AWI figures. My first purchase was the entire set (one of each) of the British Fusiliers - the rest is history.

:D

First took note of K&C with Bill Moores display at the 2001 OTSN, kept going back and checking it out. Although I did notice the guy with the funny accent at Bills table and his enthusiasm. Prior to that I was strickly a plastics collector.
Through out 2001 I kept checking K&C website and when Andy came out with the mounted WW2 Germans, I thought now is the time.
My first purchase tho were three of the Marine Iwo sets, as my dad was in the Marines in WW2.
Well upon there arrival I was hooked and thousands and thousands of dollars later the rest is history.

Yank03- it was the cheapest set in the dispay at $28. Plus loved the soldier with the hot dog and the dog. It's a cute set and will always be one of my all time favorites.

I had seen ads for some outfit called "King and Country" in a British military modeling magazine and thought they looked interesting. I was on a business trip to South Carolina and visited Toy Soldiers of Charleston store. Very nice place and that was the first time I actually saw K&C in person. I went home with the "wrecked StuG" diorama piece and that was the seed. A number of pieces have come and gone since then - I keep buying the "upgraded version" and selling the older ones. As addictions go, it's one of the more fun ones.

I can't remember my very first, at least of the K & C variety ;) But I recall I was tempted back into figure collecting as a result of the Delprado 'Men at War' magazine plus soldier range.

Mine was DD086, the running rifleman. There isn't a shop near me, so I picked it up off the net and figured it was a low cost entry to see if I liked what I saw. Now, well my wallet screams for mercy! :D

My first K&C kill was the RAF Pilot set. I can not remember if it was the late 80s or early 90s now. Whenever it came out is when I yelled "Tally Ho" and acquired my initial target! The Luftwaffe set followed along with the other glossy pilot sets. I even had the wood Sherman tank in my house before trading it away years ago. That one still burns!

Tally Ho,
Beaufighter

A Wrecked Stug Thats A Good One Binder. Who Would Ever Have Guessed, It Is A Great Piece. Mine Were The Arnhem Sets I Bought In The Hall Way On My Way Out Of The Chicago Show In 95 Or 96. They Were Andy's Last Sets.

My first K&C were two of the old gloss Alamo Mexican infantrymen that I bought at King's X on sale when I visited San Antonio in March 1999. All my subsequent K&C have come from King's X, since I moved to San Antonio later that year.

Older version of the Stug & some French Chasseurs. Exactly when I bought them has kind of blurred together with all the other purchases:D.
