Painting gloss figures (1 Viewer)

Thankyou guys, I have enjoyed broaching the glossy painting thing and am pleased with the way they've come out. I've learnt a few things along the way as well, such as Jeff's tip re leaving the paint out a little before applying (too late to prevent numerous coats of white and cream, but I'll do that next time :eek:) and block painting to start with.

Got to get me some Zulus now.:)
 
OH OH my Zulus are in deep trouble. Very nicely done Simon and waiting to see your play time with them once your Zulus become available for you to play with....The Lt.

Slowly.
I've got a bit more done, but I've been kept away from the brushes for a while, whilst I wait for the national restock of green paint :).
I'll get a photo up of where I'm up to a bit later.
You've been painting up your daughter's bedroom? Well I was tasked by my daughter with painting up some Airfix 8th Army in some nice shades of blue and purple. And very fetching they look too :rolleyes:, so the gloss work had to take a time out.

Also got hold of some Britains and Steadfast Zulu castings the other day. Not done anything with those as yet.

A couple of coats have been painted on the trousers, boots now done and I've given a quick coat of matt flesh on the ...er...flesh bits. I found myself having to give several coats of glos flesh colour on the previous figures, and since I've got to mix up 3 colours to get the flesh, I figured that if I get a matt flesh 'undercoat', I should be able to get away with a single coat of mixed flesh gloss. We'll find out when I start mucking the different colours together.
Managed to use up my last scrapings of green on the sleeves as well :p

Here are the Britains castings I picked up. Got two of each of these guys:

I was able to help myself to a mix and match array of arms to get different pose variations.

And lastly, some of the older Steadfast Zulus, again, with a mix and match of arms / weapons / shields. These had already been started by the painters, but because it was more trouble than it was worth to get a fresh lot cast, I took these. Will still re-prime them from scratch.

They've got another mold with a few more Zulus somewhere, but they elluded our search on that day.

Good morning and thank you Simon for the time and effort spent in providing us with the last group of figures and photos it's a pleasure seeing the beginning and end results and looking forward to the end results of what you now have in work that's to be finished....The Lt.
 
Bit more done to the Britains castings. Got away with a single coat of mixed gloss flesh (using red, buff and white), due to the matt flesh undercoat. Painted the helmets in Games Workshop 'Bleached Bone' as an undercoat and then applied a coat of Humbrol gloss ivory. May have to do a second coat of this to cover all traces of the grey primer.

Also just finishing off the Gatling / Camel combo handler. The detailing on this figure isn't as good as some of the other offerings, but will have to suffice.

Made a start on the Britains WWI castings I picked up from RP World as well.
Mixed the base coat out of green and sumfink else, to come up with a mucky green colour. Slapped on the flesh mix as well, as I'd seriously overestimated how much flesh I'd need for 5 x 24th troops. :rolleyes:

I agree that you should Simon with the 300 Conte Spartans soon to be heading your way your going to be quite a busy bee and by the way figures are looking great. ??????? Spartans Matte or Gloss..

Spartans - matte.
I've already done a handful of the excellent Plastic Underground Spartans in matte, so these will add to those, although if the size of the metal Spartan figures is anything to go by, they Conte ones will be slightly larger. Should be close enough to mix quite happily.
I've already preordered a set of the 9 cards - so that's 63 to start off with :eek:.
I've also been doing some mior conversions to the Conte Arabs, so they've got someone to battle with. Not that historically accurate, but by messing about with the odd limb here and there, and swapping weapons around, they look close enough to the '300' style Persian troops to keep me happy.
And besides which, I bet no-one can produce a photo to prove me wrong ;).
