Hi Guys,

Just a few random thoughts on this ‘n’ that…

1. “Don’t knock The Duke!”

Now, it’s not often Jazzeum and me have a difference of opinion however I will take issue with him on “dissing” the acting talents of “The Duke”. I loved the big man as a wee boy going to the “pictures” back in Scotland then and I love him now watching him on DVD’s. His range might have been limited but he knew what he was good at… and his star shone brightly for over 40 years! That’s one helluva achievement. Here are a few random examples of “The Duke” at his best.

“They Were Expendable”
“She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”
“Rio Grande”
“The Quiet Man”
“True Grit”
“The Shootist”
“Sands of Iwo Jima”

“The Searchers”

Hollywood makes lots of stars but only a few become “cultural icon”… “The Duke” was one of those “FEW”.

2. Club Figures

Usually at K&C HK we have two sets of releases of Club Figures a year… The next ones will be publicly announced next week but I’m telling you guys now as long as you promise to keep it to yourselves!!!

Balthasar “Bobby” Woll, Michael Wittman’s famous tank gunner. Amazingly, he survived the war and died just a few years ago.

Skinner’s Horse Lancer (on foot), the famous Indian Cavalry Regiment dressed in parade yellow tunic.

Scinde Horse Lancer, also known as Jacob’s Horse. Dressed parade-style in dark green tunic.

As for Kings X we’ve released the first two of our “Hollywood Cavalry”… the officer and the sergeant… we will be releasing early next year the next two… also cavalry in the John Ford style. Glad you liked them.

3. “John, Paul, George, Ringo and Stevie”

And now, as Monty Python would say, for something completely different… As a “child of the sixties” I grew up with The Beatles… To a lot of young British working class guys like me they showed that you could do anything and be anyone you wanted to be… they were a blast of fresh air and a huge talent that conquered Britain and then the world.

So, as you can see I’m still a fan… I was fiddling around on YOUTube the other day listening to a whole bunch of Beatles “golden oldies” and seeing some vintage clips when I came across “Paul Serenades John”… It was bloody brilliant! This incredibly clever and funny British guy, Stevie Riks was doing the most amazing impersonations of John, Paul, George & Ringo I have ever seen. He captures the looks, mannerisms and most importantly… the voices of the Fab Four. Not only that he does it all himself at home on his own video!!!

Please, please me and check this guy out. He also does Bowie… Elton John… Freddy Mercury (really funny)… Jagger… Richards and Ozzy Osbourne…

You must see this man! Peace and Love,

Andy C.

The Duke rules

"I haven't lost my temper in 40 years; but, Pilgrim, you caused a lot of trouble this morning; might have got somebody killed; and somebody oughta belt you in the mouth. But I won't. I won't. The hell I won't!" (He belts him). (To Leo Gordon in McLintock!).

The Duke rules.....Sure does.
One of my favourite westerns is The Searchers. Anyone who claims The Duke couldn't act needs to take a real long hard look at that movie again. How JW didn't get an oscar for his performance is beyond me.

"That'll be the day"

Ozzy Osbourne…

You must see this man! Peace and Love,

Andy,

You have now made my toy soldier hobby complete by linking in my childhood musical icon, Ozzy Osbourne. I readily admit having seen him 15 plus times in concert, he is truly a lovable loon and he is a miracle in the fact that his body has not quit on him yet.

Regarding the Duke, could not agree more, pretty much love every film, but Big Jake remains a stalwart for me, love his dialogue in that movie. Who can forget the sheep herder scene????

As to toy soldiers, the club figures sound terrific, I cannot wait to get them.

Thanks!

That is my favorite Duke scene of all!!:cool::cool: I loved pretty much every movie with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

"Jacob McLintock? I heard you were dead."

John Wayne: "Not Hardly."

Andy, anybody who appreciates John Wayne is a friend of mine! I agree that anybody who said that the Duke couldn't act never appreciated that a kid born in a small town in Iowa and raised on the outskirts of the Los Angeles basin and never served in the military became THE American cultural icon of the old West and of the US military. He was smart enough to know what he was good at (except for a few unfortunate choices like "The Conqueror").

Personal favorites; "The Searchers", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", "Rio Bravo", "Big Jake" and "The Shootist" among many, many others.

Maureen O'hara: "Thank you gentlemen, but this is not a job for the Army, or for the Rangers. It will, I think, be a particularly harsh and unpleasant sort of business, requiring a particularly harsh and unpleasant sort of man"
(scene cuts to the Duke sighting down the barrel of a Winchester Model 1892 carbine as Elmer Bernstein music swells up in the theme from "Big Jake")

I saw Ozzie at MSG last December at MSG. He was still going strong. However, the backup band, Rob Zombie, was better.

Brad, you are a lucky man. I "retired" from the Ozzy circuit during the Ozzfests, I found that 15 plus hours of debauchery and chaos was hazardous to one's health!

We were fortunate here 2 years ago when Ozzfest skipped KC but Ozzy came solo between Ozzfest gigs with BLS opening and then Zakk playing with Ozzy. It was particularly cool because the entire set was composed of songs from Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Oz including several I've never heard live. It was obvious Ozzy and Zakk were having a blast playing some deeper tracks from the Randy Rhodes years.

As to the Duke - my dad is an Iowa boy and always made mention of the Duke's origins. I never tire of watching his movies - an icon indeed.

Regarding the "Duke" and fond memories of one of his films entitled "The Quiet Man", I had a dog named "TROOPER"!!! Enough said here...

When we saw Ozzie, Zaak was ok, nothing special. I think Rob Zombie's lead guitarist was actually better.

My son was looking forward to Ozzfest this year but they're only doing it in Texas this year so he's not a happy camper. He's the metal head in the family. He makes me listen.

Lately, we've been watching the new Lamb of God DVD. Maybe, I'm just getting used to them, but I'm actually starting to like them a little bit. It's way better than the Death Metal he likes to also listen to. He got the Decapitated DVD the other day but that's not my thing.

You just had to know Andy was a John Wayne Fan!

I liked Wayne in "The Quiet Man," precisely because it's such a different role from the Westerns for which he is so well-known today. Also as Col. Vandegrift in "The Longest Day", though he was a little wooden, except for the scene in which he arrives in St. Lo.

And "True Grit", because it's such a great movie.

Prost!
Bradley

Horse Soldiers is very good too, one of my late father's favorites (along with Big Jake, did I mention that one yet???)

The Son's of Katie Elder and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance would be two of my favorites.

For me it is the classic Wayne / Ford Cavalry trilogy.
