Gentlemen,
My name is Howard Woods and this is my first post. I have been a keen reader of this Forum since June, 2007 and a very serious collector since August, 2006. Prior to that I was a Tamiya model builder for some 25 years. I enjoy reading the Forum for its humorous and educational insights into the world of Toy Soldier collecting. Some of you may have seen my name mentioned in a few threads lately re my first trip out of my beloved Australia to the US of A. Hence the reason for this post. A post of thanks to many people.
Firstly, I visited LA for the West Coaster Show. I did not see any of LA because of room trading, talks and dinners involving Toy Soldiers. The final day being the Show itself was amazing. I had to pinch myself many times to see that I had not gone to Toy Soldier heaven. In LA I was greeted wonderfully by manufacturers, retailers and collectors alike. So to the following I extend many, many thanks. Mike & Myska (Sierra, Our Hosts)
Larry & Wendy (March Through Times) Craig & Woody (Old Toy Soldier Home) Matt Murphy (Hobby Bunker) Peter Wang (Figarti) Bruce Hebron (Metal Shed) Pam & Harold (Brunton Barracks) Richard Walker (Britains) and a fantastic young couple who I was very impressed with Mark & Sandy (Build-a-Rama).
Collectors Steven Cheong, Carlos (desk11desk12) Michael (the Kilted One) Joe (joesgis) and my three constant room traders and drinking buddies Marc (Beaufighter) Jason (Panzer Ace) and Chris Munro (soldier01) who looked after me like royalty. Thanks mates. Footnote for Simmo: Chris enjoys a beer, but not while he's building San Pablos. Apologies to anyone missed .
Secondly, I slipped down to a beautiful little town called San Antonio to visit Kings X and The Alamo. Here, I met Martin Vasquez, a true gentlemen from Kings X shop. We spoke at length about the Alamo and Santa Anna. A very helpful and knowledgable young man. Visited the Alamo, took a boat ride around the River Walk and finished up at the Mad Dog British Pub. Enjoyed a burger for dinner and a few pints served by some very short kilted young lasses. Very interesting night.
Thirdly, moved onto the Big Apple, for the famed New York Symposium. Missed this event in 2009 because of Bushfires on the home front and was keen to see these marvellous NY collections of mine host Louis Badaloto, the most enthusiastic bloke I have ever met and one of the three Muskeeters. The others being Larry (hurry up Louis) Lo, Hans (what are you doing Louis) Henrich and Mark (where have you been Louis) Hoffman. Four of the greatest and generous guys you could ever wish to meet. The four days were magificent. The trip to Highland Falls to meet Tony (Joe Pesci) and his lovely wife Marilyn at the Toy Soldier Gallery cost me plenty, but well worth it. That day I met two outstanding guys, the imfamous Tom Dubel (tdubel) and the Grey Goose himself, Clive ( I don't mine being called a Pom) Gande. Sorry Mr. Moderator. The fabulous Dinners and the visits to Louis' home, Mark's office and Larry's apartment to view some outstanding years of collecting will always remain in my memory bank. Meeting other collectors such as Doug Luna, Mike Garner, Brad Lewin (jazzem) Ron Phillips (The Capitol One) Tim Tyler (Troops50) of Troops of Time from down south. Sorry I mentioned Sherman, Tim. Thought we were talking about a tank. Once again if I have missed anyone please forgive. A huge thanks to all concerned.
I then flew home via Honolulu (I needed a few days R&R to recover from this adventure.) But before I close this post, do you think I have forgotten someone? Yes, I have left the best until last. A huge, huge thanks to the leading man in this movie, the rock star himelf, Andy C. Neilsen, his beautiful leading lady, Helen Mok Sargeant and the up and coming supporting actor Patrick Lee. These three guys are the best, looking after me in LA and then Andy in the Big Apple. Many thanks to K&C. Cheers Howard

WOW Howard sounds like the perfect trip, this is my goal one year hopefully next year be good to put faces to names thanks for telling us about it.

Thanks very much for a well written post on your recent Toy Soldier tour of the USA.

It was a good plan to tie up the Westcoaster and the New York Symposium.

It is amazing how many collectors you had the chance to meet up with.

This hobby is certainly more than just about toy soldiers.

It is about long enduring friendships made over long chats (and beer) about "Little Men".

Best Wishes, Raymond.:)

Dear Howard / "Northgatewoods":
Ah, glad you enjoyed your toy soldier holiday in the USA recently. I also hope you are putting to good use the K&C sets of TW02 & TW18 I sold to you on eBay back on November 6, 2009. I joined the Forum in July 2007 & made a few postings for a particular reason and then "dropped out". However, thanks to another eBay sale in early parts of 2009 I became friends with recent active Forum member "Glossman" who got me to become active again at the forum. I trust you will have further postings of one kind or other in the future now that you "broke the ice" as they say.
Cheers mate!

Howard,

Meeting you in person (after we have exchanged friendly e-mails for a couple of years) was one of the highlights of my best collecting weekend of the year. I'm glad you enjoyed our antics. Larry, Hans, Mark and I are great friends, despite Larry and Hans' rather weak attempts at humor at my expense. I am really looking forward to seeing you in Chicago.

Your friend,

Louis

Hi Howard, nice to see you posting and a warm welcome to the forum. Thanks very much for the report and info from the westcoaster, much appreciated.

All the best

Rob

Howard,

Larry, Hans, Mark and I are great friends, despite Larry and Hans' rather weak attempts at humor at my expense.

As long as I've known Louis, he's always been Larry's straightman. Maybe they should take the act on the road :D

Howard

It was a pleasure to meet you and spend some time together. Glad you were able to do the GRAND TOY SOLDIER TOUR !

Please keep posting.

Ron

~ by the way the ARHEM SERIES is being canceled ... you should call your dealer right away ~ ;)

Can't say I've heard of the Arhem series. Now, I've heard of the Arnhem series. Maybe Arhem is shorthand for Seminoles :D

There were only 300 - 500 Seminoles who fought the US Army to a standstill in the Seminole War and never surrendered. So it not only is an ongoing war, but K&C could actually make a Seminole series depicting every one of the Seminoles from the war. Now that would really be a complete series. :D

So good to see you here Howard...I'm saying hello before I can even read your post...how's that for being excited!

Hi Howard,
Great to meet you in New York, can't believe how quickly the time went.
We had a great time all round.
Good to see you posting (although I'm not prolific).
Remember if you want to elicit any responses just mention Monty or Patton and Louis will be up for a chat, closely followed by the Head Chef (with his spoon for stirring) Mr Dubel !!:)
All done with a great spirit though.
See you and Larry at the Mardi Gras!!;)
Regards
Clive

Howard,

it sounds like you expectations of the trip to the US have well and truly been exceeded, reading you post. Thanks for all of the images and your reoprts, and I'm looking forward to more contibutions from you.

I can relate exactly to you sentiments after my trips to the UK shows, and meeting up with like minded people in our hobby.

I find its not the collecting, but the collectors that make this such worldwide community, and without borders.

Lets hear more from others who make three visits, and maybe we can have a "Treefrog World Get Together" in the future.

John

You caught me!! Always fun to stir it up, life would be boring if we didn't engage in lively conversations!!!!! I just love Louis' reactions to the words Patton, Monty and MacArthur!!!!!!!! Reason being, he is just like me if someone mentions Sherman, as they say, it takes one to know one. All seriousness, those that know me, know I like to debate anything, no ill will ever intentioned, I think it is a great joy to better understand other's opinions/analysis even when I may not agree, i treat it as a learning experience. It is also fun to watch the blood pressure rise!!!!!!

Howard,

No thanks needed, glad to see you joined the board! It was a true pleasure meeting Howard, we have "known" each other thru email correspondence and ebay for some time. It was great putting a name to face so to speak.

It was also a pleasure watching an Scot, an Englishman, and an Aussie duke it out! Serious laughing and great fun. I also learned about Kiwis as well as a lot about Australia (which I have to visit sometime!).

Howard, you will have a near complete K&C in matte collection within the year!!

Great fun all around.

Tom
