The new set Winter Games 001 is another masterpiece. The stock photographs don't do it justice. (I've posted one for reference). The detailing in the piece in my mind is even better than the Flying Zulu. Particularly the splintering of the shield as the Barbarians hammer makes impact.

Agree Colin it's another masterpiece set in it's mini dio taking nothing away from our Flying Zulu;););) Looking forward to seeing photos of it from your end.

Spend too much on my hobby to afford a qualiy camera.

Though trying to convince my other half, who doesn't share my passion for model figures (though is interested in history) to take photography up.

I have this...it really is a very nice set...I want to collect this series...

This set reminds me of the DVD movie I watched last night "Centurion" about the massacre of the 9th Legion by the Picts in Brittania - lots of winter scenes - decent movie . . . .
:) Mike

I notice on the Conte website on the preview page some pictures of barbarian and Roman prototypes.
Mark

yea Mark...I saw those...the mounted Centurian thrusting his sword looks greatly detailed...

thanks for the link Joseph...

on this thread it says they are producing ballistas...catapult and testudos...

I did not know what a testudo was...so I Googled it...

In Ancient Roman warfare, the testudo or tortoise formation was a formation used commonly by the Roman Legions during battles, particularly sieges. Testudo is the Latin word for "tortoise". The Greek term for this formation is "chelone" and during the Byzantine era, it seems to have evolved to what military manuals of the era call the "foulkon".

In the testudo formation, the men would deploy very densely and position their shields at the sides (rather than by the grip behind the umbo). The first row of men, possibly excluding the men on the flanks[citation needed], would hold their shields from about the height of their shins to their eyes, so as to cover the formation's front. The shields would be held in such a way that they presented a shieldwall to all sides. The men in the back ranks would place their shields over their heads to protect the formation from above, balancing the shields on their helmets, overlapping them. If necessary, the legionaries on the sides and rear of the formation could stand sideways or backwards with shields held as the front rows, so as to protect the formation's sides and rear.

Mikey likey...

Mike- that is a great picture and a great shot no doubt. I saw it in the flesh for the first time at Hackensack this fall. I felt Conte really turned the corner with this set. The figures look a tad smaller than the Romans and Barbarians I have but the colors and scultping were so much more vibrant and crisp.

This is a set I want to get but my Roman scene is not in the snow. Rather than permanently flock over the snowy base with green grass, I am considering just lumping some terrain over it to cover up the snow. Who knows- it's a set on my shortlist though.

Interesting news from Conte yesterday for Romans fans. Will have to wait and see how it develops. If they all have snowy bases, then I may have to reconsider.

Chris...I'm new to collecting Conte...never owning any before these and unfamiliar with their work...but yes...you're right...these pieces are magnificently sculpted...Richard's man did a very nice job on them...I am so impressed...I had no idea Conte did such nice work as I'm new to his stuff...and yes you're right again...they are smallish to my JJD...however...they are very, very, very close to my K&C Crusaders...and are just spot on with my Frontline Zulus and 24th Foot...

I had the same idea on the bases...either groundwork will work...either more snow or a non snow terrain to cover the bases...either would work which would allow you to mix the new Winter Games with your Roman scenes...

I will probably stick with the winter theme myself...

I have a full bottle of "dirty snow"...not to be confused with Frank Zappa's "Yellow Snow"...^&grin...but just snow that has dirt and grass terrain particles mixed in it from re-using it over and over on my JJD Snow Shoe's series...I was gonna throw it away as I finally bought a fresh bottle...but I'm glad I'm so cheap and saved it...if you look at the groundwork on the new Conte figures...it's a dirty snow...so I have plenty of ground work ready to use...

I would think they would all come with the dirty snow bases...but I'm sure you can disguise it with your Roman scene groundwork to make it work with your diorama...

either way...I'm totally impressed with the sculpting on these and want to collect them...

Superb diorama very nicely done
Mitch

Mitch...thanks for the nice compliment on the picture...

Whaddya know- a Texan giving a Pa guy advice on snow- what is this world coming to?? ^&grin Yeah Mike, trust me, after all the stinkin dirty rotten snow we get, last thing I want to do is put more in my toy soldier collection ^&grin

Another excellent job Mike.^&cool That is an impressive set. I know I am more that happy with the Spartans and Persians. The Flying Spartan is pretty hard to beat, for example. I only regret is that the line was not finished as promised. I started with that line after some were out of stock but fortunately for me, I was able to find the released ones I needed. Anyway, at least you will be able to keep up with this line and not suffer through that problem.
