Seriously--sometimes I think we ought to charge people for the free appraisals we give, particularly for people who have an item to sell, and who come here, post once about Granddad's toy soldiers, or this or that item, then disappear.

Prost!

Is that not just showing that the hobby is friendly?? I don't think it hurts anyone. I have picked up quite a few LAH sets from people on here who have done the very thing and contacted me having seen I am interested in this range.

You can usually tell by the post and then choose not to oblige Brad. It's all the info that is given and then not so much as a thank you that gets me. So rude!!

Gentle Friends,

Things are not always as they seem in public. For example, one individual posted a note on the forum indicating he had inherited a large collection from his father. As you might imagine, he knew nothing about toy soldiers and he asked for assistance in determining what he possessed, what the value of the figures might be, and how to best dispose of the collection. Quietly, another forum member and myself contacted the fellow and offered our assistance. Our assistance was never viewed on the forum.

As a result helping this individual, he presented us with some truly fine toy soldier gifts from his father's collection. The figures he gave us are highly prized as they represent his gratitude and as they are long since retired figures. None of this interaction appeared on the forum, yet he was highly appreciative and we received very unexpected rewards for our freely donated assistance.

While there are persons who only enter the forum to gain assistance in the evaluation and disposal of a collection and who rudely never indicate any appreciation for our assistance, my general philosophy is to help another person in any appropriate manner I can. Many times, there are unexpected, but positive, outcomes. And,...my services, such as they are, are hardly worth any financial compensation.:wink2:^&grin

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

I think that shows the good side of this hobby

It doesn't hurt to help anybody without getting a reward.

What a kind gesture Pat!! While a reward is not always necessary, manners cost nothing and unfortunately in this day and age they are all to often forgotten.

Precisely, Scott! It seems to have happened frequently lately, and I had to vent.

And yes, gentlemen, I understand that we are being friendly by responding to such requests. But as Scott has said, most of the time, there's no followup response. I'll continue to repsond to them with whatever I know, as we all do, but yes, would it kill the requester to post back with a "thank you"?

Prost!

Since I have met you at shows and know how kind and helpful you really are, I am giving you a mulligan for this one:redface2: Michael

Thanks, Michael, I appreciate that! As I said, I had to vent, it seems to have happened a lot lately, and Scott's clarification is very to the point, it's the lack of a response to us afterwards that really set it off.
