95th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge (1 Viewer)

A huge day- worth researching if you dont know a lot about it. Almost a whole generation of young people- bent on service, commitment, nationalism, and courage; they responded to the officers whistles, as Canadians, and and advanced, doing what no other army could do with such skill and planning that it is still studied today by military leaders. I visited Vimy Ridge in 1990, and it still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I think about the day I spent there. Sacred Ground- Soverign Canadian property, a gift of the people of France.

On another note- the Canadian War museum is world class ( think Smithsonian level plus) it is in Ottawa- and is a must visit for anyone on this board. My Girls wanted to visit it twice!

I have to agree it was a defining moment for the canadian armed forces. Been to VR many times and, it never fails to affect me in the way you mention. something about those battlefields of WWI that is completely different to any WWII battlefields etc I have been to

Important anniversary

Today marks the 95th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge which began on Easter Monday 1917. One of the most important battles in Canadian history.

Just a quick question from a fellow colonial, do Canadians see WW1 as a nation building experience the way we in Australia do?

I have visited much of the Western Front and Vimy Ridge is quite magnificent. The tunnels are sometimes open and it is an experience not to be missed.

Most definitley- we sent 4000 school kids this year for the memorial- and about 200 soldiers- including the band!

I`ve had the honour of visiting Vimy twice.Once in 1985 and then 2000.The highlight of both trips for me.I hope it will happen again for me one day.
Cheers
