It was probably just me PA, it was very popular here and was repeated for years.

Well thank the lord it wasn't just me! Couldn't stand Happy days and avoided it like the plague . The Fonz was annoying enough but his friends made me want to pull off my own arm and hit them with it.

Another example of Jacks Shark jumping is the change of character in ' two and a half men' the series bears no resemblance to it's previous identity and is surely doomed.

Ok Rob, now you've done it; first Kelly's Heroes, now Happy Days!?.........Thems fighting words in my country........................it's funny as people in the states either loved Happy Days or hated it, I liked it for awhile until it got totally played out and then I moved on to something else.

Between Kelly's Heroes and Happy Days, if I make it to London next June, we have to have a "sit down" as my people say..........(cue The Godfather music)........:wink2:

"Happy Days" arrived on the heels of George Lucas' "American Grafitti", timed perfectly for the very beginnings of Baby Boomer nostalgia for their teen years.

And who didn't have a crush on Pam Dawber? She was America's sweetheart.

And Robin Williams single-handedly revived the rainbow suspenders industry.

But "M&M" jumped, too, when they added Jay Thomas and Gina Hecht and their transplanted NY pizza shop. Adding new characters in late seasons is another sign a show has jumped.

Prost!

Came to this thread a bit late but I like others have heard the word Shyster used before. Normally in relation to bad business people or lawyers. However had never heard it in relation to Jewish people of any profession and would not consider it a rascist comment in the context it was made.

Seems to be many references to Shyster Shyster and Flywheel on Google and there is even a business selling T shirts with the words on. In the context I read it was in reference to some well known dodgy lawyers.

Then again some comments are identifed as slurs when others have no idea that they might be. It was only through this forum that I recently found out a very common word used in Australia towards those of British background was considered ''rascist'' when I have never taken it to be derogatory at all. We live and learn.

Under recent law passed in 2007 in California the rights to images of people that are passed to another survive the death of the grantor. This is also the law in Tennessee thanks to the Presley estate. Thus, if you want to sell figures of people who lived in California, you need to have the rights to do so. This may be a growing trend and if you intend to use a dead person's likeness, no matter the jurisdiction, you should consult an attorney.

I can understand why this would be the case for show business people who have a monetary interest in marketing their own image or fictional characters that they have portrayed. I fail to see how it works for historical personalities. For example, does a school text book have to have the permission of George Washington's estate to include his image? Does a painter have to get the permission of Lincoln's decedents to sell a painting of him? That not only seems unworkable but potentially allows the relatives of famous historical personalities to influence the dissemination of information about that individual by withholding permission from those who might be less favorable in their opinion. At the very least there should be a time limitation on this.

Hi Guys,
In answer to several posts… 3)“Nazi Family Compensation” As you know K&C has produced a fair number of historical figures including quite a few of the Third Reich’s “Hall of Shame”. So far we have heard nothing from the living relatives of Hitler, Himmler, Heydrich or any of the others…

Funniest thing ... the Bavarian government eschews all knowledge of Hitler and his era ... that is, until royalties, property or other forms of money are involved. What wonderful things are done under cover of disclaimers!

Oh god, I'd forgotten ' Mork and Mindy' ! Everyone walking round sayinbg ' Nanu nanu' :rolleyes2: Quite right, more tripe!

In defence of American tv they have given us Frazier and the American version of the Office, which is one of those rare beasts that is even better than the original version.

I believe the law in California was designed to protect celebrities like movie stars but the actual wording (I have not read the act) is probably not so restrictive.

As far as Lincoln goes, the family line has died out so no worries there.

Rob..

Yep made me want to clap my hands and stamp my feet... all over his face!!!! I like Frasier and seinfeld have not watched the office as the adverts I have seen for it just seem poor on both sides of the atlantic.

As I recall, there was little competition for Happy Days on Oz TV at that time, and now with a plethora of channels, it would probably still get a run...so much for TV. But I'd still like to see some more Napoleonic personalities, and Baron Larrey with a team of medical personnel and a flying ambulance would be just great, along with some Genie working on bridges - Berezina or Lobeau could be good...all I want for Christmas...{sm4}

Rob,
Your preaching to the choir on The Dukes of Hazzard, that show set back the perception of Americans to the stone age..........

I do not wish to hijack a thread, but a quick observation.

When you talk TV programs, could I recommend a New Zealand comedy called 'Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby'? It is one the funniest comedy programs that I have ever seen. A really remarkable program. Tragically, after recommending the program to the IT Department at school, computer generated images of my head on Gormsby's body began to adorn several rather prominent locations around the campus.

It did indeed mate, dire wasn't it. Still we sure as hell had our fair share of tripe, ' Love thy neighbour' ' George and Mildred' etc. Makes me shudder when I think of What we watched in the seventies. As a kid I'd have to watch the god awful ' Val Doonican show' each week I thought it would never end!

I understand there were some xenophobic type comments on this thread, I didn't see them myself but I hope the more enlightened and round minded of my American friends and fellow forum members understand I was talking only about TV PROGRAMMES. Its a shame we have to put this sort of statement into a perfectly normal conversation about tv shows, but I once made a remark about a US Politician signing a baby's stomach and that was taken as anti American.:rolleyes2:

Rob mate,
How could any of our American allies think that you, an upstanding English gentleman be anti-american. Shame^&grin I am really beginning to think that in this day and age the fun and humour is disappearing out of this esteemed gathering. Threads coming and going like the carousel at a circus. Lighten up guys.
I have the answer Rob. Become a $10 Pom and migrate to the Land of OZ where we enjoy a joke, good fun and a cold beer.:smile2:
Cheers from the Land of Good Humor, Howard

PS A good TV Show from the Mother Country was "Yes Prime Minister"
