Who is running out of space (1 Viewer)

I love this hobby, I have the funds to buy a reasonable amount of new products and I have a reasonable amount of space.....But as prices rise and my display area fills.......

Where does it go from here......

I have rearranged my space for the final time. I am talking about box storage, both full and empty and actual AFV's and figures on display, there is not mch more I can go.

The budget is strarting to strain, due to so many excellent releases by all Manufacturers.

I am very interested on how forum members are adressing this issue.

Well as it is I have an office upstairs that is now groaning at the seams, however we will at some point in the future be turning the garage into another room (its attached to house) that will be my display room, until then I may have to keep some things in boxes for a while.

Because of the exact reasons you mention, finances and room, I have cut way back on the number of things I buy. Instead of a broad spectrum of figures from many makers, I now collect only two series, one from each of two makers, and this will soon be down to one. Room problem is reaching crisis proportions and finances won't sustain any further price increases. Good chance I am out of the collecting end of this hobby within 6 months and there is nothing I can do about it. Odd to say, but the main culprit is too much new product at too fast a pace, at too high a price, combined with my love for the product. -- Al

I use to buy from many vendors AND multiple series from each vendor, but now I am down to TWO vendors (K&C / JJD).
I hated to do it, but I had to make some hard choices and ask what is my "main" interest.

What happended to me was I got behind in the series. Before you know it, the piece went "Retired". Then, within a day or two, the wolves and vutures on eBay offered stocked inventory at a huge increase over release price.

I, however, do not see me out of this fantastic hobby any time soon; and I hope that you stay in this Hobby, Al, even if it means getting one or two pieces a year. -- Larry

Thanks, Larry. I also fell behind. Trying to keep up proved impossible and thus the cut-back to two lines. The one or two items per year suggestion is probably right where I'm headed. I do love my JJD WW1 aircraft.:wink2: -- Al

Running out? I never had the space. I have a long-term home remodeling project to convert a spare room into a display area, with cabinets, but it's like one of my scale modeling builds, it'll drag on forever.

I'm not running out of space - I already ran out! That's the big reason I sold off my K&C P51B Mustang - no place to properly display it. My current "want lsit" is also strongly affected by the question "where will I put it?"

With having two young kids and not having the time or space and filling that toy soldiers are not good value for money I'm just keeping my planes and my figarti v2 range going

converted the loft and have two rooms in my home. half the garage is a work shop for dio's etc. I won't run out of room as in having to leave stuff in boxes for a while. Budget well, the hobby is expensive but, my other interests are books and, some of these are very expensive also. I don't have kids don't drink now and never smoked. The only restraint on my buying now comes from my own critique of whether its good enough to pay what manufacturers are asking. If yes I will get it if not, then, I will opt for a book from the hit list

You will need to get one for each TS series in the appropriate colors, of course; Black for the LAH series; Blue for RAF series; Olive Drab for D-Day US; Red for Russians …

Im not running out of space, just running out of ways to justify the rise in costs and what I get in return. I have made a collecting switch and am very happy with it. Still, the prices of the figures have made me take a good look at how I collect. I have decided that with two of the ranges they do- AWI and Samurai, I am really only going to collect one army, and display them in a tactical situation rather than trying to display a full blown battle scene. For example, I am going to buy some AWI American continental militia and Bluecoats (whenever FL decides to release them) and have them in a firing line facing the observer when they look at my display case. I had an AWI display with bluecoats and redcoats opposite one another but that isnt really economically feasible for me anymore.

Available space will affect all collectors eventually, I recently sold off the bulk of my WWII based collection. Now I only collect K & C Aussies (Beersheba and 8th Army) and I have never been happier because the smaller collecting focus requires less space and funds :smile2:

Well there it is......

Excellent discussion men.........I dont know how much stuff I have compared to others, but due to my love for dioramas I also have a huge supply of "Accessories". About 75 buildings, trees, fences walls, telephone poles.......Well you get the idea. The buildings are really killing my space.

Besides the basement, where I have my painting, repair and detailing area, my display area and storage area ( Fifteen - 1 1/2 X 4 shelving units to the ceiling just for Figures and AFV's ) I have a 12 X 26 garage where I keep my car also it is separate from my 2 car house garage. There is a 6 X 12 "Dirty" workshop there where I Build dioramas. . I just rearranged everything since I got the garage as efficiently as I could, but every square inch is busting. I have to make some collecting decisions soon.

I think my collection is getting ridiculous...And I am feel guilty about the amount of money spent

I slowed down my collecting for a while now for both cost and space reasons... Only picking-up selective figures/pieces from certain companies/ranges that I've started in the past. Have been waiting for an Agincourt range to pop-up that I like. First Legion it is! Other than Britains Rorke's Drift, selective ACW from Britains and the occasional, selective K&C Alamo figure, I may go exclusive with this new Agincourt range when it gets released. Looks to be a very exciting range to add much needed diversity to my current collection!!!

My approach I took when I bought my home was the following:

1.) Locate areas in my basement where I could setup permanent displays and measure out how big a display I could reasonably do.
2.) Identify the ranges I wanted to collect and the feasability of doing larger vs. smaller displays. My Roman and WW2 displays cover 2 sheets of plywood while my modern collection one table. Initially the Romans werent going to be that big but my wife got me like 2 dozen of the JG miniatures roman castle pieces for Christmas so I had to upsize.

3.) Once I determined where I could put stuff I could decide what and how many figures I wanted to buy of each range. It made it easy, admitedly painful at times, to say "no thanks" to particular lines since I knew I didnt have the room.

I have stopped collecting diorama stuff and for quite some time now WWII vehicles or aircraft or other larger pieces. I am collecting samples of the figures/regiments that I like without worrying about a group or battle scene. And I am really trying to focus on what I really,really like. There is some room left but planning how to use it is crucial...^&grin
