Pirates, Band of Misfits is fun but Cut Throat Island, Pyrates, Yellow Beard, Swash Buckler, and a few recent ones like the French version of Treasure Island...not so much.

If you can ever find the Charlton Heston version of Treasure Island made by Turner..that's fun!

To me the first POTC is a very good movie, the 4th pretty good,2nd was ok,the 3rd one was the worst but I still love The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood with Errol Flynn. He was a great pirate.
Mark

Agree about Flynn. He was, and still is, THE image of the swashbuckling pirate. No one else in his class. -- Al

As a kid I thought the Crimson Pirates was wonderful. The First POTC was good, but I haven't watched another since the 2nd - just toooooo much. The ironic thing is, for all the charm of Flynn, Lancaster and Depp, real pirates were pretty despicable. A comedy group in Australia satarised 'Laugh like a pirate' day with wondering why 'Rape like a pirate' day hadn't caught the same attention. At sea no body could hear you scream as it were....

It may not be politicy correct, but I find that " Rape like a Pirate day "... amusing..no wonder it did'nt catch on...what type of dummy would think up something like that...Tom

It was the Chaser boys. When they were doing The War on Everyting (I think), using that mock CNN format, it was one of the lines that ran along the bottom of the screen. A news feed I think it was called. Some times I'd be so busy reading these that I'd be missing the main action!

[h=3]Pirates and global warming[/h]
A chart, included in the open letter, illustrating the relationship between pirates and global temperature

According to Pastafarian "beliefs", pirates are "absolute divine beings" and the original Pastafarians.[SUP][5][/SUP] Furthermore, Pastafarians believe that the concept of pirates as "thieves and outcasts" is misinformation spread by Christian theologians in the Middle Ages and by Hare Krishnas. Instead, Pastafarians believe that they were "peace-loving explorers and spreaders of good will" who distributed candy to small children, adding that modern pirates are in no way similar to "the fun-loving buccaneers from history". In addition, Pastafarians believe that ghost pirates are responsible for all of the mysteriously lost ships and planes of the Bermuda Triangle. Pastafarians celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19.[SUP][36][/SUP]
The inclusion of pirates in Pastafarianism was part of Henderson's original letter to the Kansas State Board of Education, in an effort to illustrate that correlation does not imply causation.[SUP][37][/SUP] Henderson presented the argument that "global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of pirates since the 1800s."[SUP][5][/SUP] A chart accompanying the letter (with numbers humorously disordered on the x-axis) shows that as the number of pirates decreased, global temperatures increased. This parodies the suggestion from some religious groups that the high numbers of disasters, famines, and wars in the world is due to the lack of respect and worship toward their deity. In 2008, Henderson interpreted the growing pirate activities at the Gulf of Aden as additional support, pointing out that Somalia has "the highest number of pirates and the lowest carbon emissions of any country".[SUP][38]

Captain Blood stands supreme as the best pirate movie of them all, while The Crimson Pirate is so gloriously bad that it is actually quite good. Though not a pirate movie (but I type slowly and my mind wanders) how good was Gregory Peck in Captain Hornblower?

Ha Ha....Capt Hornblower is a moot point.....no comparison with Burt swinging through the rigging with his dumb mate....Have you seen the Hornblower TV series.....bloody great.......thought Sea Hawk was better than Capt Blood... a good movie....I liked the U Beaut sword fight at the end of Sea Hawk.....who would have believed Errol was a medical wreck....Tom

Saw a bit of the series and rated it quiet highly. I am not a fan of Peck but that movie was magnificent. As for Captain Blood, has there ever been a more beautiful woman than Olivia De Haviland? If we had been contemporaries and both single and she played her cards right, she may have had a shot with me.

Tom,

The local pirates here on Cape Ann and the North Shore, North o' Boston, were a really nasty bunch and really small time attacking small fishing boats from small boats. An 18th century erq body was found about 20 years ago buried under a house near the water and pirates were suspects. It was pointed out the buttons were still with the skeleton and pirates would have stolen the clothing. More like domestic foul play.

Another local small boat pirate was a head chopper which was he he got victims' cooperation.

The Pirate
By Shel Silverstein

Oh, the blithery, blathery pirate
(His name, I believe, is Claude),
His manner is sullen and irate,
And his humor is vulgar and broad.

He has often been known to imprison
His friends in the hold dark and dank,
Or lash them up high on the mizzen,
Or force them to stroll down a plank.

He will selfishly ask you to dig up
Some barrels of ill-gotten gold,
And if you so much as just higgup,
He’ll leave you to fill up the hole.

He may cast you adrift in a rowboat
(He has no reaction to tears)
Or put you ashore without NO boat
On an island and leave you for years.

He’s a rotter, a wretch and a sinner,
He’s foul as a fellow can be,
But if you invite him to dinner,
Oh, please sit him next to me!

Bloody Hell,,start cooking that dinner.............How's that for a quick reply......Tom

I like just about every pirate movie ever made, all for different reasons. I personally think the 4 POTC's are among the best movies of recent time, could watch them over and over again, the characters are priceless!

Oldies but goodies - Treasure Island (Newton), Long John Silver (Newton), Blackbeard (Newton), All the Flynn films are great including Sea Hawk, Captain Blood. Also have enjoyed Black Swan as well as several with the infamous Skelton Knaggs in them!

In my opinion, you can't make a bad pirate movie

Newton was a great character actor...made a good pirate....Wallace Berry made the first Treasure Island,,,must have been in the 30's...Berry and Walter Brennan ...terrific character actors...Black Swan...Tyron Power ..I believe Tyrone Power flew PBY's during the war
Have to agree about Errol,,,he is my favorite actor,,,followed by Audie Murphy...not a great actor but I have a great respect for him....Pirates forever.......cheers Tom.....PS...cant place...Skelton Knaggs ...not the name....maybe the face.

My favorite was The Crimson Pirate 1952 with Burt Lancaster and his side kick Nick Carvat featuring some of the greatest acrobatic stunts ever film by both....The Lt.
