I have just arrived in the UK from Brisbane and have settled in with friends in Sutton. My wife and I visit, on average, twice every three years. We went for our traditional walk through Sutton to shake the jet lag and she made an early foray into Marks and Spencers although I did offer to take her to any clothing shop in London. She just likes that store for whatever reason. My first and only purchase, which is also a tradition, is something that I consider to be one of the unsung glories of the Mother Country. I love these things!

Jelly babies were launched by Bassett's in 1918 in Sheffield as "Peace Babies" to mark the end of World War I. Production was suspended during World War II due to wartime shortages. In 1953 the product was relaunched as "Jelly Babies". In March 1989 Bassett's were taken over by Cadbury-Schweppes.

Hey Jack, glad you arrived over here safe my friend, looking forward to meeting you in our wonderful capital while you are here mate. Gotta love Basset's Jelly Babies, they are an essential part of any long car journey^&grin:wink2:

As for M&S , they do some lovely things in their food dept, nice sandwhiches and cold pasta's etc.

So I will see you in London before you go and I'll buy you an Orange and Lemonade as we are both tea total......ok, fifty percent of that may be a lie:wink2:

I tried to have some fish and chips on Brighton Pier but was distracted by battered pork sausages and chips. They were a heart attack waiting to happen but they were magnificent.

Went to Bath today. Surely there is not a more beautiful town in all of England.

There are many that are "as" beautiful. The trick is to see them in sunshine. That's the first problem !^&grin You've been lucky with this summer, the first we've had for a while.

The light did play a trick or two on us. In the photograph of me in front of the bath I look like a middle aged man!

I know what you mean. I had beer-battered bacon in Tijuana once, it was delicious but I could actually hear myself getting fatter as I ate it.

If you ever do live there - you will find it tiresome fighting your way into a town literally full of tourists every day. It's okay for a while - but when it happens EVERY day - you will get fed up with it. It used to be just in summer - but when we eventually left - it was 12 months per year. jb

Just returned from a mixed grill at a restaurant overlooking the Bosporus. It was a very impressive meal at a ridiculously cheap price. I am a determined non tipper but I weakened and tipped ninety percent of the bill and it still worked out cheap.

I do not like to judge a nation on only a dozen people but if they are a cross section I must say I am very impressed. People could not have been nicer. My wife’s family visited Turkey in 1915 and they found them to be very hostile and difficult people. It seemed to her relatives that the Turks did not want visitors at all. The reception was so poor that they did not bother going on to Constantinople and just packed up and holidayed in France instead.

Lucky that Australians overseas are so charming or we might have added to the bustle!

We used a 'park and ride' outside Bath because, as you have said, it was crowded and parking would have been close to impossible.

My brother used to travel from the US to the UK on business. He liked it so much that he moved there. Then, he went to Australia and liked it there so much that he moved there. Of all the places he calls ‘home’ he spends the least amount of time in America.
