Confirmed it was terrorism.
That's really not the point, as you well know. The question is the inordinate amount of attention this story has received compared to other stories of potentially greater impact to the world.
Confirmed it was terrorism.
In the overall scheme of things, this story has received more coverage than warranted in comparison with what's happening in the Ukraine, which is more significant.
The devils triangle plusIt's hard to believe, but apparently over ten years after 9/11 and with requirements like taking our shoes and belts off at airports, two people got on an international flight with stolen passports. Something that could easily have been checked. Apparently the airline was not required to check the Interpol database that reported them as stolen. And did not check on its own. One of these passports was reported stolen over a year ago in 2012! Even if that turns out to be unrelated to whatever happened, that needs to be fixed. If these people did have something to do with the plane going down, it's all the more tragic since it was entirely avoidable.
Do you have a source you can cite? I only see a story that the Malaysian Prime Minister has described it as "deliberate" (http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/15/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-plane/index.html?hpt=hp_t1), but that's not necessarily the same thing as a terrorist attack. Details tend to suggest air piracy, rather than a terrorist attack. A fine point, perhaps, but there is a difference.
And Brad's right, this is a terrible event, but in terms of its impact on the world, it doesn't have the same impact as a pending war in Eastern Europe.
There is also the disturbing, albeit small possibility, that some bad guys now have a 777 in their possession with the capability to pull some type of suicide attack. My guess is that whatever the plan, whoever took over the plane was an inexperienced pilot and eventually got lost or crashed somewhere in the ocean. Maybe the passengers even rushed them. If the pilot were going to take the plane down, he would have done so. There was no need to fly off course for hours before doing that.
There's also the question of the missing emergency beacon. It is set up to go off right before the plane crashes, as I understand it. No such signal was ever received.
Now here's a far out possibility. The plane is captured and "repurposed". At some point it takes off again headed for Wahington DC or NYC. Its new or same captain claims he wants asylum or something such and has 230 odd passengers/hostages. Dare we shoot it down? How furious would the Chinese be if we did? But if it gets let through, and has aboard a WMD of some kind, I.e., an EVP device, nuclear bomb, etc., then what!!
I know it sounds far fetched/conspiracy theory whacko, but the whole thing is too bizarre at this point.
doubt that,, the Ukraine military seems to be fading by the day
Sorry, but the situation still threatens to cause more trouble for a larger number of people at this time, than a missing airliner. Even if it winds up that the airliner was hijacked to be used as a massive homicide bomb, that doesn't have the same impact on the international political situation as Putin's latest step towards his goal of establishing a new version of the Russian empire.
I think the amount of attention is due to the mystery of it's disappearance. Most people I know are more interested in this than what's happening in the Ukraine even though that the Ukraine could be the story of 2014.
