Britain's Zulu War (4 Viewers)

I understand the possible confusion after reading your post about the different sizes. That is why I posted specific size/scale information for you in my last post. Although I can see your interest in compatible additions to your current collection of F&I figures, this would inconsistant to our own range of figures. We will visit this period (F&I), and others in both of our current scales and finishes. This will fill gaps in existing collections such as Redcoats/Bluecoats and our new spin off range, and offer some interesting subjects in Matte finish as well.

Thanks for the update on the new Zulu War range, Ken. I have a couple of Tradition sets in this range. This is one period where my preference is gloss figures. I don't know of any other company out there, giving the collector a choice in painting style. Bravo to Britains!

As some of you already know we have been creating ranges with unique poses and adding on to them with each new catalog... while occasionally retiring a few sets. This will probably be the same appraoch that we use for the Rorke's Drift/Isandlwana series. This should allow folks to have time to buy what they want within reason. The paced developement will also allow us to create a number of poses that we would not be able to do if we tried to release everything in a short period of time. These are well know battles with lots of interesting and well documented events to recreate in miniature and we are sure that there will be lots of input from the collectors!

Thanks for the info; that we would get matte and gloss was something that never crossed my mind before your first announcement was made. The perfect solution:cool:.
Will there be any overlap in the series or are there strictly one style for RD and one for Isandlwana and if that's the case; could you tell which one.

And BTW I've the intention of collecting both series. This is all very exciting.

Glad to hear that you are happy with our decision to do both gloss traditional and matte style figures for this period. We plan on doing both of the engagements you referenced and later we will cover some other subjects as well. The flyer we are planning will introduce some of both ranges as many of the collectors will probably decide for one style over the other. There will be a 24th foot EM introduced in the Redcoats series in this catalog so that will be the sneek peek for the traditional 54mm gloss figures.

That would be my follow up question; will there be lancers and gatlings in the future :)
But what I meant in my previous post was; will one battle (i.e. Rorke's Drift) be covered only with gloss and the other only with matte, or will there be scenes/characters/battles covered both in matte AND gloss?

Yes, both battles will covered in both styles! Again, I have to say this makes my work bench look rather odd, as there are some really tall Zulus fighting some rather short 24th Foot. I understand some of the Welshmen were short but this may be a little extreme! All kidding aside, I really wish I could tell you more but I am going to have to save some surprises for the Zulu Range Flyer. Richard and I both agree that some very interesting uniforms have been generally overlooked in the past... I also have to confess that we both really like Lancers and Royal Artillery...

Britains new Fall Catalog/Flyer will introduce two new ranges based on the Zulu War of the 1800s and covering both the battles at Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana to be issued in both matte and gloss finish. The Matte range will be in their 1/32nd (56mm) size and style and the Traditional Gloss range will be in the same 54mm style of the Redcoats/Bluecoats series. Britains has also announced plans for new range of French & Indian War figures to join the already crowded field of matte finished F&I figures currently available. It is also rumored that they have proto-typed a German Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Hanomag in 1/30th scale with German and British figures.

I take it then that the Zulu War series may be introduced at Chicago, but not necessarily available for sale at that time.
 
What makes the Zulu War so popular with collectors? Is it the epic movie "Zulu", or Donald Morris best selling book "Washing of the Spears"?
I think that's what started the interest for me. How about some of you other fanatics?:D

Zulu, seeing it as a child on tv (I'm 30 now), getting a Isandlwana 1/72 esci battle set after that, chasing the Charles Fripp artwork that was on the box as a young adult, resulting in buying Zulu Dawn.
After that I bought several books and two britains sets as well as a plastics.

Now that I think of it, the Fripp artwork really did it. Man was that scary as a child. And very inspiring now as well.

The new series by Britains will be my first serious attempt to buy into a all metal collection, both matte and gloss. When you are used to plastic toy soldiers, you kinda need to evolve to more expensive painted metal. And imho the new britains style is what I like best.
My expectations are really really high.
 
The Zulus are great. They are stoical and good natured but can be a fierce bunch when aroused. I live in Natal so how can I not love the Zulu war and all that goes with it.

Donald Morris was apparently a CIA operative on extended vacation in Natal when he became interested in teh Zulu war and wrote his best selling book" The washing of teh spears". Along with EA Ritter's Shaka Zulu this was standard reading for us at school. Recent scholarship has shonw that both books are full of factual errors and inaccuracies. However they did precipitate the current interest in the whole era. For a war that lasted 6 months there is now a huge bibliography whihc seems to be added to on an annual basis. I really want to know though is whether or not the new Britains gloss figures will be action poses and vingettes or standing figures like the current Redcoats range.

Hi All! Plan on seeing static poses for the Redcoats range and action poses for both the Gloss Traditional and the Matte finished ranges. How else could you convay the desperate fighting at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift?
Some of you will probably like the W. Britain Collector's Club Christmas set this year...(hint, hint).
