Applying Matt finish to gloss figures, doesn't always work

Ray, What figures are applying the matte finish to? I suspect that if they were painted in full gloss enamel I don't think a matte finish is going to work. From my experience it works best going from matte to gloss not gloss to matte. Might be time for a repaint.:) Scott

I think I have competed with John for old figures:D I agree with you both, it is a very economical way of building up a unique collection. Scott

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

Have started painting the figures and also commenced work on the blanket rolls. These are rolled from Milliput and once dry I will put some slings around them made from electrical tape before painting. Scott

What Toy Soldier items Have You Acquired in The Last 2 Weeks ?

Attended the local plastic modellers club garage sale on the weekend and came away with two MasterBox Napoleonic kits I had been after and an interesting Tiger Moth variant in 1/72. A couple of older gents saw me walking around with the Napoleonic kits and told me of their 54mm collections and...

    Dragon ACW Union Inf

Hi Victor, I have a couple of those kits. They aren't too bad but I agree with you about the moulding of the details- they lack definition. Looking at 1/35 forums the keen guys tend to go around all the details with a fine blade and 'undercut' the features, which seems to work well. A Historex...

    Castings and/or painted

That sounds right Bob. I purchased several Ozmade kits at a steam festival in Maitland in 2006 from a guy who was located on the NSW Central Coast. He had the Ozmade range and a sort of modular range of Napoleonic wargames figures. I wish I had purchased more before he disappeared.:) Mike...

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

Will do JB. I ended up redoing them again last night as I thought they were too big and used a brand new X-acto blade which seemed to work better. I have seen video of the GW people using the putty with Vaseline. It looks like it works well- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNSvo3NR92Y They...

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

GW putty! I had a play with the two-part epoxy party last night and made an attempt at putting the hair on the Brunswick Hussar helmet plumes. It shaped very well but found it quite dry on the surface when I cut the pattern into the putty. Is there anything you can add to it to soften the...

    Castings and/or painted

Malcolm, Another one for making castings available. There are some desirable figures and ranges among those All the Queen's Men figures, the Colonial figures are very desirable (there aren't a lot of Boer War figures around). I have always thought that line that making castings available...

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

Drawing some inspiration from diverse sources today! Firstly JohnnyBach's Life Guards thread. Secondly the Australian politician Christopher Pynes book 'A letter to My Children' where he writes "My father and I would use the now-vacant bedrooms upstairs to handpaint Napoleonic era model...

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

Brad, Thanks for the info regarding the pipes. The painting instructions for the Valiant figure suggest the pipe should be painted white as well. I am thinking for the mounted figure I will paint it brown as per the wooden shown in your post. The uniforms being largely black I am planning on...

Restoring Brunswick Hussars- New Hope Designs.

Pretty much painted the horses apart from some shading and now starting on the figures. My Valiant Miniatures Brunswick Hussar kit has arrived too so will start making swords and sabretaches once the figures receive some paint. Still have to make some blanket rolls for the saddles as well. Scott

    Is our Hobby Changing?

Just throwing this into the ring Malcolm. I notice in the war-games and modelling worlds that 1/48 and 1/56 seem to be increasingly popular for figures and armour, with the figures becoming far less like the traditional wargames figure and more like a model soldier. 1/48 armour kits seem to lose...

    Is our Hobby Changing?

That sounds interesting Malcolm. Those Tommy's War figures are beautifully sculpted and seem to attract the modellers/painters on other military modelling forums. I've often wondered how many of those kids who paint the fantasy war-games figures make the jump to larger figures in historical...

What are the Forum members reading

I will add that book to my wants list. I am currently reading R.F Delderfield's 'Seven Men of Gascony'which interestingly pretty much starts with the battles of Aspern-Essling and Wagram from a French perspective. Delderfield wrote the book in 1949 and it may well be one of the first books of...

    Ebay Will Make You Cringe

Opportunity there! Some of those figures are definitely worthy of repair and repaint at the starting prices. The commando with the bike definitely looks repairable and not too difficult repaint. I'm sure it would be worth more than its current condition. Someone have a go at them:smile2: Scott
