    The Dambusters

Re: The Dambusters (serious digression) sorry nothing to do with the Dambusters but I was told there was a Hollywood version of The Ladykillers - I saw the trailer, frightening but fortunately short. Those 1950/60 B&W war films were some of the finest films made I still think The War to the...

    Merlin Was Scottish (?)

Loved it especially post 30 Always enjoyed Geoffrey of Monmouth Wont be buying this book There so many “true” stories – Arthur, Robin Hood etc I like to read proper research however I’m sceptical of such books. Now who can tell me if Ryngold of Samogitia was a historical man (as one book tells)...

    Antony Beevor Crete

Re:Crete - the real hero Perhaps the real hero of Crete was Admiral Cunningham - someone we havent mentioned in these discussions. As British infantry prepared to evacuate the Admiral gave orders for his ships to move to the harbour to pick up infantry. There was no air support, and the ships...

    Britains #8807 21st Lancers?

My old friend Martin Tabony made two figures (officer & trooper) of the 21st at Omdurman for Toy Soldier & Model Figure magazine. Martin is a former cavalryman and one of the finest sculptors of British soldiers – he takes his research seriously. He has them with the Khaki helmet

    The Dambusters

I’ve been watching this since the end of the fifties To use an Olde English expression - “bloody marvellous” (I heard that there was to be a Hollywood remake which begs the question “why” – who could make a better version than the original. And who would replace Richard Todd and Micheal Redgrave?)

Basic work is done, painted as 2nd Iniskilling Regt of Horse 1690 (red with green facings) - 1st Regt has red facings with its red coat just too easy. Two complaints from a convertor's point of view - no breast plate and the jacket is open showing the waistcoat - dont always know what the...

This is the first picture of our latest figure (assuming I can post it). It shows a Macgregor Gentleman Officer of Mackays’s Regiment during the Thirty Years War. When Mackay’s Regiment was formed amongst the first recruits were some Macgregors, and I was able to find an authentic Macgregor...

Most favorite line from a war movie

“They don’t warm the pot, you know” Tinkerbell whispering to the Flight Adjutant of Halfpenny Field after the American 8th Air Force arrive in their Flying Fortresses. In case you’re uncertain Tinkerbell is referring to the teapot

The Victoria Cross - Interesting Site

On a similar theme I don’t know if any of you saw my article in TSC on Sefton’s Saddle. I had a personal invitation from the Adjutant at the Household Cavalry Barracks to photograph Sefton’s Saddle so I pushed my luck and asked if the Standards of the two Regiments could be draped above the...

    Del Prado plague

I like the story from Dettigen of King George dismounting when his horse shied due to a cannonball ploughed through the grass, saying that he could at least control his own legs. His English wasn't too good but his courage was second to none. I’m looking at the French musketeer – some of the...

The Victoria Cross - Interesting Site

Your comment on the double VC set reminds me of the story of Field Marshall Roberts – only man to wear two VCs. He won his own VC and then decades later his son was awarded one posthumously. Queen Victoria ordered “Plucky wee Bobs” to wear his own VC on his left breast and his son’s on the...

    Tips

I always undercoat figures, whatever the size or whatever they’re made off. If I’m painting small scale figures I spray black undercoat, and this acts as a shadow. Anything I miss is also shadow. Larger scale figures (30mm upwards) get a white undercoat. I normally use a spray white car primer...

    Del Prado plague

I bought the first figure in the new DelPrado series “Cavalry” today – a Marlburian cavalryman for the special price of £2.99. It’s close enough to the period I collect – from the Restoration to the end of the century – to allow me to convert them. I can’t buy a mounted casting for that price.
