1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, Pipe & Drum Band. (3 Viewers)

Great progress, John! And thanks for the nod on the Araldite ;) Seeing the shots of your bench and tools, I think we could probably be dropped at each other's benches and fit right in.

The reins on these are very nicely done. They're similar to the ones in Traditions kits of mounted musicians--no surprise, though, since Mr. Caton sculpted most if not all of those, too. They're substantial enough to work with, in terms of gluing, shaping, painting, etc.

I usually have to replace the reins in Imrie-Risley kits, on the other hand. They're usually too delicate, and have just a small nub-and-dent to attach to the horse. I wind up drilling a hole through the horse's mouth, making a basic bit and snaffle, I think it is, out of wire, and then using lead foil for the reins.

The variety of poses you have here is excellent, too. I like that you'll be able to have a unique pose for each horse in the band.

Prost!
Brad

Hi Brad - so "Snap" on the tools - move over!^&grin

These castings from Yeomanary Miniatures are also very similar to those of another excellent provider of castings, "Asset Miniatures". The reins provided are very similar. As to the poses - I'm absolutely knocked out by the fact that they are all so different. Wonderful idea - so simple - yet makes each horse and rider unique! I love them already.

I am going to ask Brian - if for the future - he can do a Household Cavalry Band - in a similar way. If the answer is "yes" - I'm first in line! Wonderful product. ^&grin

By the way Brad - if you haven't done so already - ask Brian for a catalogue. Knowing that you like to keep ahead of the game with who does what - this is certainly one TS Company to watch for the future.

Hi John,

You're making a lovely job with the band figures. This is the first mounted band Yeomanry Miniatures has made as up until now only marching cavalry bands have been produced. Yeomanry Miniatures castings are similar to those produced by Asset as we have the same sculptor one Alan Caton.

I was pleased that you like the variety of the poses of the standing horses. Now that I am introducing walking horses into my range I am trying to do the same with them.

Keep up the good work!

Regards,

Brian.

Hi Brian - A HUGE thankyou for these - they are drop-dead gorgeous! Hope you read the hint about a Household Cavalry Band at some future point - that's been on my wish-list for ages - but I havent seen a maker yet who did a nice enough band for me to have one. One done in your style would be just the ticket I think. Maybe one for the future - perhaps?

I'm currently working out the best way to make up and paint the piper - but almost there now. I'm going to do the pipes in the Clan Shaw tartan, as I have some marching pipers with the Royal Stuart variety - but not the Shaw.

Going nicely - but I'm not rushing this project - and garden prep and seed planting have come along to interfere as well. Thanks again - and give Alan a big pat on the back too. johnnybach

Just to show you that the garden isn't taking up all of my time, I thought you might like to see the first piper taking shape. I've certainly found it that it is pointless painting his legs before sorting out the order of how to fit his arms and various pieces of the pipes together! So won't be doing that from now on. I have tried him on the horse - and he will look smart when I'm ready to mount him. See also another couple of mounts and riders progressing. jb

Hi Brian,
very nice subject, I will stay tuned to this thread. I enjoy the "Khaki-Subjects" a lot, and they do look great in glossy paint. Looking forward to the London show in march. Never got around purchasing any figures of this brand but that has to change. Will follow with great interest.... - excellent work!
kind regards
Wolfgang

Hi JB, only just got caught up with this thread & I have to say your 1st mounted piper is coming along splendidly {bravo}} can't wait to see how they all look together when your finished!

Craig

I have one of these Yeomanry figures with a lance- really is quite nice! I will hijack this thead with a pic if i get it done soon!
Really impressed with the horse and the general quality of the figure!
Grant

Hi all - glad you seem to like the herd! Hey Craig, bet you've never seen a piper like this before - 'cos I certainly haven't. I do hope they will look really something when completed too - though I'm definitely taking my time with these beauties, as I want them to look as good as I can make 'em.

Grant - hi-jack away to your hearts content mate. That never bothers me, as I just trundle on regardless. I also think it contributes to any general debate if you are posting pics of similar things. This is my first purchase from Yeomanary Miniatures - but it definitely won't be my last, as I'm impressed too Grant. The castings are very nice indeed - and the horse-poses are inspired. Note that Brian is working on walking versions too - ideal for a Household Cavalry Band - eh? (BIG hint! - Anybody else fancy one of those? If enough say "Yes" - it might encourage Brian!).:wink2:

Looks like Brian may get another customer with Wolfgang too. Excellent!:D

All the best - johnnybach

Hi John,

I am listening to your hints. At the present time I have four walking horse positions for other ranks and five heads but only with the standard British Military Saddle with attachments for sword and carbine and two Officer's horses. WW1 horses with full marching order equipment will be available later this year but I don't, as yet, have any musicians horses.

I have shied away from doing Household Cavalry figures as these are usually the first Cavalry produced by competitors after they move away from the infantry. My only exception was to produce 1st and 2nd Lifeguards and Royal Horse Guards in marching order at the request of a customer who then only bought one figure.

My next band was going to be "City of London Yeomanry" in their French Grey Serge Frocks, Khaki Breeches and Slouch Hats with Purple Facings and French Grey Plumes, however, if there is enough interest and orders for a mounted band of the either 1st, 2nd Lifeguards or, Royal Horse Guards pre 1914 or even, dare I say, the more modern Household Cavalry then I would consider the project as I did when you approached me with the idea of the 1st Canadian Rifles band.

All things are possible.

Regards to all,

Brian

Ha-ha! - Nice to know Brian - and thank-you. Yes, I fully understand your dilema. I did approach Asset with the same idea, as they already do a limited range of Household Cavalry - and thought that it might have been a relatively easy task for them to adapt their existing figure, by adapting arms/instruments to be able to provide them. But - same problem - would the demand be there? I do have their two Drum Horses (lifeguards and B&R's in Review order).

I have seen other manufacturers offerings - and am tempted sometimes - but they don't come near either Asset's - or Yeoman for quality.

So - at present I have left "the others" alone - in the hope that Alan - WILL - make one some day for someone. I will think positively of your comments though, as "An almost definite, possibe, maybe!":D And that will do for me for now. Thanks for listening.

We shall see. Thanks for the thoughts though. Anyone else out there want a "Quality" HC band?

I thought that I was almost there with my first figure, but couldn't get him to sit right after assemby. So I tried him on horse 2 - and he fitted. Oddly enough Rider 2 then fitted horse1??? I think that I will rethink my strategy a bit - and fit the rider to the horse - before fitting arms/pipes once the figure is seated nicely. Just one of those things you find out when putting them altogether. Waiting for glue paint to dry on these two now - so will take dog for walkies. jb

Hi Johnny, as you like mounted pipers how about the Royal Oman Police Band? They are mounted on camels, including kettledrums, with pipers. White jackets, dark blue trousers and Arab headdress. Colourful enough for you? Trooper

Evening All - warm night, warm night.

Hey - apparently you can never have too many camels !(don't know why:confused:)

Sounds good Trooper - you wouldn't by any chance have a picture - would you?:rolleyes2: This titchy little ittsy-bittsy thing was all I could find.

Right Johnny, pictures attached. Forgot to mention that the trousers (dark blue) have double thin white lines, as on the black and white photo, giving the appearance of tartan. Trooper

Looks novel. Is that an Arab headress? A far more colourful camel mounted band is the Indian Army Border Security Force (BSF). I saw a video once, and they are REALLY colourful - though it's a Military Band.

Do you know if anyone is going to produce the ones that you showed? jb

Meanwhile, back at the current project - at least I have all the bits together at last, on the first two pipers. A few little details to finish off on these - and I'll have the first pair under the belt. At least now, we have an idea of what they are going to look like. Always a bit tricky doing anything for the first time - and I don't have anyone elses to copy from!! so have learned a lot from these.

Very nice, John! The effect on the horses looks like shading, especially on the contours of the legs, there looks like some depth to the finish. The gloss finish looks great on them.

Prost!
Brad
