2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

If the NYY's and Dodgers do meet in the WS, it will be the 12th time they have matched up, the last time being 1981. Hard to believe it's been that long since these 2 went at each other. Dodgers won in 1981 but are only 3-8 overall in the series. Yankees dominated the Dodgers while they played in Brooklyn, winning 6 of 7 series but the teams are 2-2 since the Dodgers moved to LA. If they meet this year, it would be kind of a rubber-match for the teams, post-1958. Would be fun to watch. But the NYY's need to get there first. -- Al

Another manager who won a division bites the dust: Dusty Baker. Absurd.

Instead of blaming the manager, maybe the players should look in the mirror.

I hope the Mets put him on their list of possible managers.

This is completely shocking and absurd. Rumor had it that a 2-year extension was a done deal. Can't fathom the reason behind this. The whole staff has been canned. No clue as to who will be hired but it will be tough to find a better man than Dusty. Smells of panic to me. Will watch the PM team show to see what is said. -- Al

On last night's broadcast they mentioned that the 30th anniversary of Kirk Gibson's dramatic World Series home run was approaching. They also mentioned that Dennis Eckersley (who is a playoff commentator for TBS) has not shied away from being part of that historical moment as some others have when involved in such things.

It is no surprise to me, the guy was a class act in Oakland and as George alluded to in previous posts, he has carried that same class with him to Boston.

Was it in 1987 or 1988?

1988.

The Astors have one hit through three innings, have gone 15 strait innings without scoring a run and are hitting under .100 as a team in this series.

Just forfeit the game and be done with it.

Next up; Dodgers..................................I really, REALLY hope they pick up right where they left off vs the Cubs as if they come out burping and farting, I'm going to smash something into 10,000 pieces.

1988, don’t remind me, not so much about the World Series but the NLCS.

Or not.

The wheels came off for Severino and the MFY bullpen tonight and despite Quasimodo hitting a bomb that almost killed the conductor and knocked the choo choo train off it's tracks, the Astors won going away and we're on to game 7.

I'm with Jason; Sherman Klump will stride to the mound with his hat on sideways and shut down the Astors, the bullpen will take it from there, the Astors will try the all hands on deck approach and it won't work......................................

The road team hasn't won in this series. The Astros came home with their proverbial backs to the wall and are now confident and people are in their corner because of Harvey so the Astros will win tomorrow.

Or not.

The Yankees have beaten the defending AL Champions in their place in a deciding game. The Yankee fans were smug today -- "we've got this" -- and we know the networks want Yankees Dodgers so the Yankees will win tomorrow.

Or not.

I don't think the Astros have the pitching. Once you get past Keuchel and Verlander the drop off seems significant.

Well in all fairness, they have 27 reasons to be smug (or is it 26, I can never remember), they have a history of coming up big in big situations, unlike the pre 2004 Red Sox and were it pre 2004 and they were in the ALCS, the sky would be falling in Boston today.

Regardless of what happens tonight, they have a great young core and thanks to some great trades, have a farm system that is absolutely loaded. They can trade some of those chips to fill in holes, or go out and drop a dump truck full of money in front of a Harper, Machadio or whoever else they set their sights on.

I see another 5 to 6 year run similar to 1996-2001 in them.

Full credit to Cashman, he's a vastly underrated GM.

Ok, time to cue the "Well tonight is the night; I've gotten more enjoyment out of this season than I did last Halloween when I shoehorned myself into my authentic, game worn Lou Gehrig jersey and went trick or treating with my kids (hey you can't that disease from the shirt can you?), if they lose tonight, so be it" from Louis as every time he's done that, it's a reverse lock and they go on and win to extend their season, so fire away Louis.

Or they might.

During the regular season it worked and in a game 7 anything can happen.

Moreover, do you think they’re going to stick with Morton if he gets into trouble. They might go to McCullers, who pitched well, or even Keuchel.

I had to rub my eyes and check to see if Louis hadn’t written this. George, is that you or has Louis pulled a halloween on you???

They have three good young players. Other than that, the team is ok. Starting pitching is good but not great and a pen that looks good one year can look terrible the next. Assembling a pen is the most difficult job for a GM. It can make or break a team. The future does look bright but we know that in sports things change and you can’t use one season to look into the future. Things happen. That’s why there hasn’t been a repeat winner since 2000. You could have said the same about the Cubs and their talent is better than the Yankees.

Frankly, you could say the same too about the Astros. They have some great young players but need work with the SP and the pen. Unfortunately for the AL West and the Angels they could be tough for years.

Or not.

The NYY's history in regards to the World Series really is unbelievable. They have been in 40 of them, going 27-13. No one else is even in the same neighborhood. The team with the second most appearances is the Giants, with 20 and they are only 8-12 in those series. St. Louis owns the second most series wins, going 11-8 in their chances. Dodgers are 6-12 and will obviously add to their glory or agony shortly. The NYY's are simply in another universe as they have lost more series than all but 4 other teams have even appeared in. -- Al

It's obvious now why the Nats cut cords with Dusty. They've asked permission to talk to Alex Cora, who was expected to sign with the Red Sox but this will escalate the bidding.

Dusty being let go has caught everyone down here by surprise. Up to the series with Chicago, his return was all but official. My guess is that the Lerner's felt Dusty wasn't going to get them over the bump and that the elder Lerner is running out of time (as are Harper and Murphy, who go FA after 2018) to see the team in it's current form make it to the WS. The whole view changed with the loss to the Cubs, fair or not. -- Al

I'll plead temporary insanity.

Great post by you; and yes, building the pen is the key, someone wrote an article about how a number of recent WS winners did so by having a lights out bullpen, specifically the back half.

This is what the game has become; the starter gets you 6, then you've a 7th, 8th and 9th inning guy waiting in the wings.

The MFY's have Quasimodo, Sanchez, Hicks, Didi, Bird, the lummox center fielder who's name escapes me, that's 5 very, very good young players, then throw in bulbous head in left, Headley and Frazier, they are light years ahead of the Red Sox and anyone else in the East.

They will have their hands full with the Indians and the Astors going forward, but will the Astors be able to sign their young talent, that's the rub..................

With the Baker firing, Rizzo stating that just winning 95 games is not enough, it is obvious the Nats have basically said 'World Series or bust' for 2018. The question now becomes, what manager in his right mind is going to take the Nats job, knowing the pressure of the goal, and knowing the Lerner's will fire anyone who doesn't achieve the goal? The Nats have now gone through 7 managers in 13 years, not exactly a track record of consistency to inspire confidence for an incoming manager. -- Al
