2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (3 Viewers)

Al:

You piqued my interest. That 1970 team was incredible. They had three Hall of Fame players, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson while being managed by a Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver. The Orioles beat the Big Red Machine in 5 games to win the World Series.

Wow.

Those were the years of glory for the O's. Won the WS in '66 and '70, beating the Dodgers and Reds, but lost the WS in '69 and '71 to the Mets and Pirates. Still, they made 4 WS in that 6 years span and went 2-2. Not bad, and great memories. Those O's teams were stacked in all aspects of the game. It was the 1971 O's that had 4 20 game winners. -- Al

Al:

4 20 game winners on one team? There wasn't a single 20 game winner on any team in 2017.

Roy Halladay has died at the age of 40 in a plane crash. He won the Cy Young twice and was an 8 time All Star. RIP.

As if I needed reminding about the differences in the baseball of today versus the baseball of 50-60 years ago, I was watching a repeat of Game 1 of the 1970 World Series between the Orioles and the Reds. RHP Jim Palmer had started and was pitching for the O's, leading 4-3 after 8 innings. In the top of the 9th, the O's mounted a scoring threat, putting 2 runners on, with 2 out. Palmer's spot is due up and, wait for it, Palmer actually bats for himself. A 1-run WS game in the top of the 9th, 2 on and 2 out, and the pitcher bats for himself. Never would even be considered in today's game, never even a possibility that the pitcher would still be in the game after 8 innings, much less bat for himself with 2 runners on in a 1 run game. Palmer popped out and he went to the bottom of the 9th with the 1-run lead. He got 2 outs in the 9th before LHP Pete Richert got the final out to clinch the 4-3 win in Game 1. Different world. -- Al
Watched Game 2 of the 70 WS today. Interesting stat about the 70 O's...they were 40-15 in 1-run games during the regular season. 40 wins out of a total of 108. Not too shabby. -- Al

A bit surprised that Scherzer won the Cy Young Award, defeating the Kershaw publicity machine. Almost every announcer/sportswriter I listened to had the award going to Kershaw, even 1 of the 2 Nats TV guys had the award going to Kershaw. It wasn't even close with Scherzer taking 27 of 30 first place votes. Congrats to Mad Max. Actually, Nats pitchers took 3 positions of the top 6 vote getters (1st, 3rd, and 6th). Now, if only they can figure out the playoffs...:rolleyes2:^&grin -- Al

I just saw an interview with Scherzer. He reminds me of Kershaw. You really don't want to like him because he is so good and not on your team but you just can't bring yourself to do it. Like Kershaw, he seems to be a truly sincere person who respects the game while not taking his success and abilities for granted.

Just in case there was any doubt, the O's SP had the worst ERA in MLB last season. It was 5.70, and their top 2 SP's, Bundy and Gausman, had ERA's of 4.24 and 4.68, respectively. Unimpressive at best, but miles ahead of the rest of the starters who had historically awful ERA's of 5.61, 6.81, 6.97, and 7.84, just unbelievably awful. -- Al

Yankees have hired Aaron Boone. I find the selection puzzling.

The best part about this is I won't have to be subjected to his yammering on the ESPN broadcasts anymore.

Any chance he hires Jessica Mendoza as his bench coach?

So the MFY's fire a guy who had probably his best year as their manager and hire Boone?

This on the heels of Eli being benched in favor of Geno Smith; so is there something in the water in NY or what?

They’re dysfunctional. If you had asked who are the dysfunctional ones, the Jets, Mets, Nets (there is a pattern there) and Knicks come to mind, not the Giants or Yankees.

Kind of wish the Stanton situation would get resolved so the rest of baseball can get on with the Hot Stove League. -- Al

Rumor is he's headed to the Giants, which would make me very happy, my second favorite MLB team...............

I read earlier today the Giants and Stanton were talking.

Note: After I posted the above I read the Cardinals and Stanton’s representatives were talking.

The Stanton to the Giants rumors have really picked up in the last 24 hours here in the Bay Area. Last night all that was mentioned was a meeting between the Giants and Stanton in order to gauge his interest in waving his no-trade clause. Tonight the talk has turned to who the Giants might be trading for him.

With the Dodgers and Cards in the race I am trying not to get to excited yet. However, it is tough not to get a little bit amped up about the possibility.

To quote my New Englander buddy George, “Aaron F-ing Boone”?!!😡😩. I think the Yankees and Giants ownership has been hanging out with the Mets’ and Jets’ owners . . . First Eli being benched for Geno, and now Girardi replaced by Boone! Just what the Baby Bombers need to succeed, a rookie manager with less experience managing than they have playing!😞. What is Cashman thinking?!🤪.

It is a puzzle. Girardi did a fantastic job and gets fired, replaced by a rookie with NO experience in the position. Similar to the Nats situation. Baker does a good job, gets fired and replaced by a man with far less experience. Seems to be a trend, hiring inexperience over experience and hoping for the best. I guess it's a movement against the status quo or an attempt by management to connect to the younger players, but it is a risky play to put inexperience at the head of a couple of dozen different personalities and thinking there will be fewer problems. Managing a team, IMO, requires some prep time in the lower positions and especially time invested in dealing with team dynamics that shouldn't be acquired in OJT. OJT is what the minor leagues are for. -- Al

NYY's apparently out of the running for Ohtani. Ohtani's reps have told the NYY's that they will not be invited to make a bid. -- Al
