It looks like Hosmer might be the next free agent to sign, either with Kansas City or San Diego.
Further proof that the SP that pitches deep into games in baseball has become almost extinct...in 1968 there were 3 pitchers that led MLB n CGs, Marichal with 30, Gibson and McClain with 28 each for a total of 86. In 2017, there were a total of 59 CG's thrown in all of MLB. As a matter of interest, there were over 800 CG's thrown in 1968. I'm sure that the tendency for today's pitchers to throw all out on every pitch is the reason for the SP that only lasts 5-6 innings and for the incredible amount of arm surgeries that now dominate the game. It won't be long until the SP is obsolete and a pitching staff is built around 3 inning pitchers.:rolleyes2: -- Al
I think that's what we might be headed for, if the brain trust can figure a way to make it work. It won't work with current roster restrictions because the same 9 guys would just wear out pretty fast after being used day after day. Expand the roster by a few players, carry 15 or so pitchers, tweak the schedules or maybe cut back to 154 games (yeah, right:rolleyes2I remember Billy Bean once half jokingly said that he would love to have a pitching staff with nine closers, one for each inning.
Only 34 days until pitchers and catchers report.^&cool -- Al
Good one, and unfortunately, very true.:rolleyes2: -- AlWhat about the Orioles??? We don't have any pitchers???...^&grin
So true...The best laid plans.....
Astros got SP Garrett Cole from the Pirates. Can you say 'super rotation'? The rest of the AL West will be playing catch-up even more than before. -- Al
The Astros will be in contention for as long as the contracts last for their young stars; once they are up, they'll cry poor mouth and they'll walk and go to other teams and that will be that, think the Royals from a few years ago, back to back WS appearances, now they are hot garbage.
Hopefully the Astros pitching will silence the 1927 Yankees this year with all those big bats, they'll end up hitting more home runs than the gashouse gorillas from the Bugs Bunny cartoons................gee, can't wait.............:rolleyes2:
The clubs are definitely pulling back, whether it be because of the players wanting more money than the clubs perceive they are worth, or the multi-year contract commitments that are being asked for, or because of the 'superiority' of the FA class after next season, or a combo of all that, there are going to be some players left out in the cold. It is a buyer's market at the moment and the players seem at the disadvantage. -- AlI think it’s a calculated move by clubs to reduce salary demands, calculating that as spring training approaches players will get a little antsy and sign for what the clubs consider a more reasonable salary.
