2018 Baseball season (10 Viewers)

Hall of Fame inductees: Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome and Trevor Hoffman.

Receiving less than the required 75% were Barry Bonds (56.4%), Roger Clemens (57.3%), Mike Mussina (63.5%) and Curt Schilling (51.2%). With his vote totals, Mussina may get in next year or the year after (assuming he's still eligible; I don't know how long he's been on the ballot).

Edgar Martinez had been predicted to be an inductee this year but evidently his numbers must have fallen off over the last few days. Mussina always looked to be short this go-round. They voted in 4 good ones. -- Al

I missed Martinez, Al. He fell 20 votes shy, which means he’s almost a certainty to get in next year, his last year of eligibility.

I consider myself to be a pretty big baseball fan, yet somehow I seemed to have missed out on Jim Thome's career? That has to be the quietest 600 HR's in history.

Jason, that's kind of true from my standpoint as well, although I was aware of him as he was a long time ALer and actually an Oriole for the last few games of his career in 2012. He hit 30 or more Hr's in 12 seasons, just not for teams I cared about, except for the 3 he hit for Baltimore. -- Al

Marlins fire sale continues: Yellich to Brewers. A travesty that MLB should investigate.

Brewers also signed Cain from KC. Watch out Cubs and Cards.

Did they get more than a bag of balls and four bats like they did in the Stanton trade?

Jeter is a lousy, piss poor excuse for a baseball executive.............and he STILL can't go to his left.

This is not a re-build, this is a fire sale. In a rebuild you unload top heavy contacted star players while you keep good, young talent.

Brewers supposedly got 4 good prospects, including 3 of the Brewers Top 10 prospects. Problem is, as always, a prospect is just a prospect until he achieves, which is always hit or miss. -- Al

So the Brewers forked over top tier talent in their trade, while the MFY's traded away tomato cans for a player who's top three MLB talent.

Yeah, that sounds fair...................

I am hoping that Jeter has the Giants' front office on speed-dial!

^&grin

Love the moves the Giants have made so far in the off season; the beauty of having a NL team to root for is in the event the AL East is a non starter this year due to the Red Sox having to go up against the 1927 MFY's, I can turn my attention to the Giants.

Love that team..................

I was listening to Giants' flag ship radio station KNBR late last week and the Giants are still in the hunt for another bat as well as some pitching help. They, like every other team in MLB, are waiting to see what the market does with the big name free agents before making any moves.

It's about time...MLB has announced that every team will extend safety netting to the end of the dugouts for the 2018 season. This will make the up-close viewing down the lines a lot safer for the fans although purists may complain about the netting being a detriment to a clear view of events. The netting may take some getting used to, but once used to it, fans won't notice it and the safety factor makes this a long overdue modification. -- Al

A little disturbing that it is now February and the O's still have done nothing about a starting rotation that need 3 SP's, with pitchers and catchers reporting in a couple of weeks. I have the feeling that the O's will try to 'cheap' their way through this with more second-tier SP's and cast-offs, just as they have in the past. Anyway, it is getting towards the time to do something... -- Al

Al:

I think a lot of fans feel the same way you do about their teams. It is Feb. 1 and many teams have not done anything in the off-season.

As spring training approaches, I think things will break as players get antsy but I think a lot of players will get signed during spring training. I heard that some players were thinking of organizing their own spring training.

Only 11 more days until the pitchers and catchers report. Bundy and Gausman are going to be awfully lonely in the O's camp if the front office doesn't do something... -- Al

11 days to go and these big names remain unsigned (among others)?

Yu Darvish
Eric Hosmer
J.D. Martinez
Jake Arrieta

I think part of the problem is that the players (and agents) are overvaluing themselves. Take Arrieta as an example. Reports are he wants a multi-year contract worth $180 to $200 million. He will be 32 when the season opens and it seems no one is willing to pay that many dollars for a 32 year old pitcher with a contract that might be 5/7 years long. Arrieta might be more realistic at 4 years and $110 million. Common sense will have to prevail at some point. -- Al
