2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Should have mentioned that during this same game, Harper became the only NL player with at least 100 walks, 100 RBI's, and 100 runs scored. -- Al

Yet, I still tell my son not to emulate that guy in any shape way or form. All that talent and great numbers yet couldn't even run to first base. My dad is a Nats fan as well and likes him but I just don't get it. The man has a boatload of talent yet the attitude is such a turnoff (or if you ask my daughter, his hair! :) :) ).

I prefer Judge and Stanton but my son still sticks with his favorite Cutch, even if the poor guy got sent to NYY :)

One has to wonder how long Mad Max can carry that bullpen before he gets tired and looks to walk away.

O's lose #111 tonight, tying the franchise record for most losses in a season. They have 6 games left... -- Al
The O's have entered the record books in spectacular fashion. They lost franchise record game #112 today in Boston, 19-3. It is their largest losing margin of the year, somehow appropriate for the record of losses they have set. A 117 year old franchise now has a new low to post as their record now stands at 45-112, surpassing the 1939 St. Louis Browns loss record of 111 and far surpassing the 1988 O's team loss record of 108. Still have 5 games left to set the lowest winning percentage, also belonging to the '39 Browns, .279. The O's currently sit at .287. -- Al

Chris, bad publicity, bad hair and impressions aside, Harper is worth having on a team. He is actively engaged in youth programs off the field and is controversy free in his private life and causes no clubhouse drama. He is still only 25 years old (26 in October) and his on field persona will continue to improve as he matures further. He's not perfect, but he is an elite ballplayer.
Nats bullpen needs a rebuild, again, and is something GM Rizzo has been struggling with for a few years now. Time to come off some money for quality relief pitchers. Only the closer, Doolittle, seems a sure thing right now. -- Al

DeGrom just finished his 2018 season with a K, his 1,000 career strikeout. He’s finished what should be a Cy Young season with a 1.70 ERA. He has a 3-0 lead going into the 9th. Let’s hope the bullpen doesn’t blow it.

Bullpen saved it. DeGrom had an unreal year. I think he is the Cy Young favorite but it will, or should be, a close run thing with Scherzer. The numbers that these two collected are scary similar with 2 exceptions, ERA and wins. The WAR is almost identical, 9.0 to 9.2, ad to DeGrom; IP is 220.2 to 217, ad to Max; QS are 28 to 27, ad Max; Hits allowed are 152 to 150, ad Max; BB are 46 to 51, ad DeGrom; K's are 300 to 269, ad Max; WHIP is identical, both at 0.91; BAA is .188 to .196, ad Max. These numbers are virtually a push. The only real gap exists between the two in wins where Max has 18 and DeGrom 10 and also the all-important ERA, where DeGrom has a distinct advantage at 1.70 to Max's 2.53. It is VERY close in terms of overall numbers, but I think DeGrom will win it. -- Al

Nats won #81 today. At least now they can't end with a losing record, even if they are 20 wins short of where I thought they would be. Yea!:rolleyes2: -- Al

Al:

Near the end of the year teams that are out contention need something/anything to salvage their seasons. Going .500 in an otherwise disastrous year is an accomplishment. The same goes for the Mets and deGrom if he wins the Cy Young.

As a Giants fan, at this point in the 2018 season, I'd take finishing at .500 or having a Cy Young contender. ^&grin

I am just hoping Brandon Crawford wins another gold glove this year.

So true. Nats need to win one in Colorado to assure a winning season. I see the Nats have moved the rotation up to start Strasburg on Saturday and Scherzer on Sunday. We should have a decent chance to gain that winning season. It is depressing to get to the end of a long season without playoff possibilities but that's the way the baseball bounces. -- Al

An interesting note, and an expensive one. CC Sabathia was ejected for throwing at Ray's catcher Sucre during the NYY's 12-1 win today. The ejection came with CC's innings pitched total for the year sitting at 153. His contract stipulated a $500 K bonus if he pitched 155 innings. It was his last start of the season so that is one expensive ejection.{eek3} -- Al

wow...that was a costly ejection...2 innings...6 outs more outs....cost him 1/2 million dollars!

will he pitch again before the season ends?

Further musings: What happened to the Phillies? They were 53-42 at the All-Star break, a half game in the lead in the NL East. Since the middle of August, they have gone 10-27 and will have to win their final 3 games to save a .500 season. Even so, I do like the starting pitching with Nola, Arrieta, and Eflin anchoring the rotation. -- Al

Yanks only have 3 games left, so no starts for CC, but they might sneak him in for a relief appearance if they feel generous. My guess is they will rest him for the playoffs and to heck with his 2 innings. -- Al

if they value him in the future...
that is a very generous way to pay him what he was so close to receiving...
1/2 million dollars instills a lot of goodwill for the future...

Mike, CC is a FA after the season and he will be 38 years old. My guess he doesn't really figure in NYY future plans. He's got close to 3500 innings on his arm. I'd be surprised if the NYY are worried about his good will at this point. That said, it would be a nice gesture to get him the innings, or just pay him anyway, after all he has won 129 games for the Yanks. -- Al

I'm sure the Yankees will see he gets his $500k, he threw at the Rays Catcher because the Rays had thrown at Austin Romaine's head. The Yankees destroyed the Rays 12-1 after the chin music. I wonder if this is the wake up call the Yanks need to get a little momentum going into October . . . :wink2:

even if they don't bring him back next year...
in the grand scheme of things...
1/2 million is not that big a deal for the Yankees to reward a 10 year vet...
and I bet the whole dugout was happy to see him throw at the batter...
coaches included...

don't know if you read his social media comment...

"That's for you...........B----!"

it was intentional and he was vocal in making it known...

The way baseball free agency is these days I wouldn't be surprised if Sabathia ends up with the Rays next year.

The Cardinals have put themselves in a bit of a hole as they lost to the Cubs today. If LA wins tonight , the best the Cards can do is tie for a WC spot.

Looks like the Os will stay steady at 60.5 GB as they lost tonight and Boston is losing.

And with the O's loss went their last slim to none chance to reach 50 wins. Now 46-113 with 3 left.:rolleyes2: -- Al

A great example of how the Giants have fallen since their World Series days is Bumgarner. Following his loss to the Dodgers tonight he will finish the season at 6-7, making him 10-16 over the past 2 seasons.

He is still considered one of the best postseason pitchers of all-time, however that doesn't matter much if you don't make it to the playoffs.
