Verlander had injury problems which caused him to have a 'down' year in 2015 and everyone wrote him off but he bounced back big time. So will Bums. -- AlA great example of how the Giants have fallen since their World Series days is Bumgarner. Following his loss to the Dodgers tonight he will finish the season at 6-7, making him 10-16 over the past 2 seasons.
He is still considered one of the best postseason pitchers of all-time, however that doesn't matter much if you don't make it to the playoffs.
Wrote this on 8/22. Now there are only 2 games left in the season and the O's have 'met' my expectations. With today's loss in the first game of the doubleheader with Houston, the O's are 46-114, one loss from my prediction. I have no doubt that they will reach the 115 mark. The O's have gone 18-45 since the trade of Machado (and everyone else), which isn't all that different from the 28-69 they were before the trades. The O's, after 2 consecutive 1-run losses to Houston, are now 12-30 in 1 run games. A season of true accomplishments. -- AlIt's just unbelievable. The O's hit 90 losses today, with only 37 wins. O's need to go 18-17 over the last 35 games to avoid the 'worst O's team ever' title. I don't see how they can do it. Based on they're winning percentage since the fire sale, I don't think they can reach 50 wins. I think they may be looking at 115 losses at their current rate. -- Al
They done dood it. Lost Game 2 of the double header, 5-2, to reach the predicted 115 losses. One game left and it's over. -- AlWrote this on 8/22. Sammy, in terms of the worst teams since the 162 game season was started, the 1962 NY Mets are #1 with a 40-120 record; #2 belongs to the 2003 Detroit Tigers at 43-119; #3 belongs to the 2018 Baltimore Orioles with a 46-115 record with one game remaining. So, not the worst all time, but a Top 3 finish.{sm2} -- AlOk Al, where did we place as all time worse team (162 games)??? I'm sure we'll win Sunday, we won our opener and we'll win the closer....just lost every game in the middle!!!!!!!
Strasburg and the Nats beat Colorado 12-2 tonight to clinch a winning season and finish in 2nd place in the NL East, for what it's worth...:rolleyes2:-- AlSo true. Nats need to win one in Colorado to assure a winning season. I see the Nats have moved the rotation up to start Strasburg on Saturday and Scherzer on Sunday. We should have a decent chance to gain that winning season. It is depressing to get to the end of a long season without playoff possibilities but that's the way the baseball bounces. -- Al
A great player, person, and MLB's loss. A classy sendoff by the Mets. -- AlLast night was David Wright’s last game. Before an emotional sold out crowd of 40,000 David took the field, playing next to his old infield partner Jose Reyes. His two year old daughter threw out the first pitch and Mayor DiBlasio proclaimed yesterday David Wright Day in New York. David walked and fouled out and after he took the field in the 5th inning, Manager Mickey Callaway came and took him out to thunderous ovations that went out for 10 or so minutes. He bowed to the Marlins and hugged every Mets player. After the Mets won the game in 13 innings, and he got a chance to celebrate one last time, he addressed the crowd, thanking them (and us) for having his back.
In his post game news conference he said he was happy how things went but at the same time not happy how things turned out; injuries had robbed him of the chance to continue playing (he said just playing those five innings was painful). Injuries derailed what could have been a Hall of Fame career.
It’s probably a game few Mets fans will ever forget. He will always be the Captain.

That was my feeling on the situation, as well. There had been talk that Max was going to pitch if the game had playoff implications, but I didn't see why it was necessary since they weren't NATS playoff implications. Max had a long year, made all his starts, threw a LOT of pitches fanning 300 men, so, no, he doesn't need anymore stress on his arm. Glad the Nats came to their senses. -- AlI'm glad to see the Nats are not starting Scherzer today. When I heard they might, I couldn't understand why they'd put his health at risk. Forget that the game has playoff implications. It means nothing to the Nationals. What would the Nats have said to their fans if he'd hurt himself? He's pitched enough this year.
