2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

He’s had a couple of injury filled years. Next year is another year.

A great example of how the Giants have fallen since their World Series days is Bumgarner. Following his loss to the Dodgers tonight he will finish the season at 6-7, making him 10-16 over the past 2 seasons.

He is still considered one of the best postseason pitchers of all-time, however that doesn't matter much if you don't make it to the playoffs.
Verlander had injury problems which caused him to have a 'down' year in 2015 and everyone wrote him off but he bounced back big time. So will Bums. -- Al

Al/Brad:

Thanks for the words of encouragement, it has been a tough year but I am already looking forward to next season!

It's just unbelievable. The O's hit 90 losses today, with only 37 wins. O's need to go 18-17 over the last 35 games to avoid the 'worst O's team ever' title. I don't see how they can do it. Based on they're winning percentage since the fire sale, I don't think they can reach 50 wins. I think they may be looking at 115 losses at their current rate. -- Al
Wrote this on 8/22. Now there are only 2 games left in the season and the O's have 'met' my expectations. With today's loss in the first game of the doubleheader with Houston, the O's are 46-114, one loss from my prediction. I have no doubt that they will reach the 115 mark. The O's have gone 18-45 since the trade of Machado (and everyone else), which isn't all that different from the 28-69 they were before the trades. The O's, after 2 consecutive 1-run losses to Houston, are now 12-30 in 1 run games. A season of true accomplishments. -- Al

They done dood it. Lost Game 2 of the double header, 5-2, to reach the predicted 115 losses. One game left and it's over. -- Al

Ok Al, where did we place as all time worse team (162 games)??? I'm sure we'll win Sunday, we won our opener and we'll win the closer....just lost every game in the middle!!!!!!!

Sammy, in terms of the worst teams since the 162 game season was started, the 1962 NY Mets are #1 with a 40-120 record; #2 belongs to the 2003 Detroit Tigers at 43-119; #3 belongs to the 2018 Baltimore Orioles with a 46-115 record with one game remaining. So, not the worst all time, but a Top 3 finish.{sm2} -- Al

So true. Nats need to win one in Colorado to assure a winning season. I see the Nats have moved the rotation up to start Strasburg on Saturday and Scherzer on Sunday. We should have a decent chance to gain that winning season. It is depressing to get to the end of a long season without playoff possibilities but that's the way the baseball bounces. -- Al
Strasburg and the Nats beat Colorado 12-2 tonight to clinch a winning season and finish in 2nd place in the NL East, for what it's worth...:rolleyes2:-- Al

The Dodgers beat the Giants last night to clinch a playoff spot.

There is nothing worse than watching your arch-rival celebrate on your team's home field.

Last night was David Wright’s last game. Before an emotional sold out crowd of 40,000 David took the field, playing next to his old infield partner Jose Reyes. His two year old daughter threw out the first pitch and Mayor DiBlasio proclaimed yesterday David Wright Day in New York. David walked and fouled out and after he took the field in the 5th inning, Manager Mickey Callaway came and took him out to thunderous ovations that went out for 10 or so minutes. He bowed to the Marlins and hugged every Mets player. After the Mets won the game in 13 innings, and he got a chance to celebrate one last time, he addressed the crowd, thanking them (and us) for having his back.

In his post game news conference he said he was happy how things went but at the same time not happy how things turned out; injuries had robbed him of the chance to continue playing (he said just playing those five innings was painful). Injuries derailed what could have been a Hall of Fame career.

It’s probably a game few Mets fans will ever forget. He will always be the Captain.

A great player, person, and MLB's loss. A classy sendoff by the Mets. -- Al

If my memory's not mistaken, the last time he appeared on the field (other than a pinch hitting appearance on Thursday night) was against the Nationals in May 2016, when, with a look of disgust, he took himself out of the game. I guess the best you can say is that he got to play for the team that he rooted for when he was a kid and he got to end his career the way he wanted it. Asked at his post game press conference if David would be available to pinch hit today, Mickey Callaway smiled and said "we'll give him the day off."

The price of tickets were through the roof last night, about $400 for field box seats.

The Yankees were classy too. They took out a full page in the papers congratulating him on his career.

I'm glad to see the Nats are not starting Scherzer today. When I heard they might, I couldn't understand why they'd put his health at risk. Forget that the game has playoff implications. It means nothing to the Nationals. What would the Nats have said to their fans if he'd hurt himself? He's pitched enough this year.

That was my feeling on the situation, as well. There had been talk that Max was going to pitch if the game had playoff implications, but I didn't see why it was necessary since they weren't NATS playoff implications. Max had a long year, made all his starts, threw a LOT of pitches fanning 300 men, so, no, he doesn't need anymore stress on his arm. Glad the Nats came to their senses. -- Al

Some interesting 2018 Bronx Bomber facts:
They have reached 100 wins for the 20th time in franchise history.
They have set a new MLB Hr record for the season, 266. The old record was 264. One game left to add to it.
They have become the first team to get 20 or more Hr's from all 9 positions.

The O's lost season of 2018 is finally done. They went out with a win, 4-0 over Houston, giving them a final record of 47-115. Some of the lowlights:
The 2018 O's record was 7.5 games worse than the O's previous worst team, the 1988 O's with the 54-107 record.
The 115 losses were the most in the 117 year history of the franchise. The previous record, held by the 1939 St. Louis Browns with 111 losses.
The O's scored 3 or fewer runs in 90 of their games...their record in those games, 9-81.
They scored 2 or fewer in 65 games...record was 5-60.
They were 12-30 in 1-run games.
Their record was 6-16 in shutouts.
The O's were outscored by 270 runs.
Whew, at least it's over. -- Al

Looks like we’re going to have two playoff games tomorrow in the NL.

Nats lost season of 2018 is finally over as they went out with a whimper, losing huge 12-0 to the Rockies. Think most of the team checked out after yesterday's last hurrah. They finished with an 82-80 record, which perfectly reflects their mediocrity this season. Some of the lowlights:
Nats were 7-15 in shutouts.
They were 18-24 in 1-run games.
They were only 21-21 in games decided by 2 runs.
They were 4-10 in extra inning games.
They scored in double figures 15 times, BUT, gave up double figure runs 10 times.
The bullpen gave up 2 or more runs in 68 games, yielded 1 run in 32 others, and were unscored on in only 60 games. (I lost track of 2 games.:redface2:)
Obviously, this team couldn't win the close games and it torpedoed the season.
Good riddance to 2018. Is it March yet? -- Al

How about that American League? 3 teams with 100+ wins, 3 teams with 100+ losses. That's never happened before, not even close. You either won big or lost big, only 1 team approached a .500 record, the Angels at 80-82. What a weird year... {sm2} -- Al
