2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Jason,

As we've discussed many times in these pages, building a good pen is the key for many, if not most, teams. It's what separates the winners from the losers. Unlike starting pitching, which is fairly consistent year to year, a decent bullpen has to be constructed every year; a pen may be good one year but poor the next, unless constant tinkering takes place.
Nats know this Golden Rule as they have had dysfunctional bullpens for the last several years and it has cost them, big time. They will, once again, be rebuilding the pen this off-season. -- Al

Great win by the Rockies over the Cubs in 13, but curse MLB for those 8PM start times. -- Al

I stayed up for the whole bloody thing. From the 1st inning on, it never seemed the Cubs were going to win. Pity because a Brewers Rockies series doesn’t really excite. Sorry to see the Cubs go.

Watched the whole thing, too. Personally, I don't care for the Cubs, but I don't really care about the Rockies, either. Guess I's like to see the Brew Crew make a run. Don't care who wins LA v Atlanta, as long as it isn't LA.:wink2: Would like to see the NYY's make the WS, but I don't see how anyone gets past the Red Sox. -- Al

I know there are some great baseball minds on here (Al, Brad etc.). So maybe one of you can explain to me what Bob Melvin is thinking by going with an all bullpen rotation tonight (no starting pitcher) against the Yankees in an elimination game? According to some local reports he might change pitchers every 1-2 innings. It is worth noting that it is a bullpen that has struggled in September.

Is now the time to "try" this out?

Jason, I'm a traditionalist so I don't like or 'get' the whole 'no starting pitcher' trend. I haven't followed Oakland, but looking at Oakland's starting staff, it is not a strong one in the traditional sense, with what looks like up to 13 pitchers used as starters at one time or another, many with minimal innings indicating that the A's have used the 'no starter' strategy quite a bit. I don't like it but it appears to be what Melvin has been using and succeeding with (97 wins), so I guess it's basically a situation of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. -- Al

First fallout of the O's horrid season, Showalter's contract will not be renewed. O's will have a new manager in 2019. So long Buck, it was a fun ride until 2018. -- Al

I guess it is an all or nothing gambit, if it works Melvin is a genius. If it doesn't he will be questioned the entire off-season and perhaps beyond.

Thanks Jason but I’m a legend in my own mind ^&grin

I think Tampa tried this approach this year. I believe they did it because they didn’t have good starting pitching; in that case it might make some sense. I don’t know enough about the As pitching to say if this was the reason.

I had heard of this approach years ago. Chuck Tanner when he was with the Pirates said he’d like to bring in a new pitcher every inning to give the hitters a different look. However, I don’t believe he ever tried it because of the criticism he received from his pitchers.

O's GM Dan Duquette is gone, too. No shock there. -- Al

What baseball fans, and especially Yankees and Red Sox fans have hoped for all season will start Friday night: a Yankees vs Red Sox ALDS! This is what it’s all about!😎😎😎😎😎. I only wish it could have been an ALCS like back in 1999, 2003 and 2004!!

Watching the 97 win/everyones sexy pick to win the WS/Athletics piss down their collective legs last night vs the gashouse gorillas and expecting them to do the Red Sox a favor and knock those *******s off reminds me of Great Britain watching the Germans steamroll through Europe in 1939/1940 and think "No problem, the French army has this"...……………...:rolleyes2:

That game was over when Quasimodo hit that rocket off of that tomato can in the bottom of the first inning and they showed the crowd shot of 60,000 former Rikers Island inmates go postal in the stands.

No problem MLB, the Red Sox will do to the Gashouse Gorillas what Great Britain did to the Germans, first by standing firm during the Battle of Britain and then capped off by their victory at El Alamein.

And Luke Voit; good Lord what a grade A, dead from the neck up cementhead he his, right out of central casting, ie, the perfect gashouse gorilla.

I hate him with the fire of 10,000 suns and that was before I got a look at his abomination of a haircut.

There is no way Gino did that, that butchers job is 100% an Enzo.

Strap yourselves in boys and girls, the **** is about to get real starting tomorrow night.

PS; it's good to be back fellas...………….:wink2:

As much as I care less of either N.Y. or Bos. I have to pick the worst of 2 evils...I like Sweet Caroline song so I'll get with the Sox!!.....good to see you back George.

So are you pessimistic/optimistic/scared to death?

I'm pessimistic.

At best.

The Gashouse Gorillas set a record this year for home runs by a club and if I am not mistaken, all 9 of their starters have 20 or more home runs, that is astounding to me.

They have a top shelf bullpen.

Their defense blows, they have decent starting pitching.

The Red Sox have an injured Sale, a guy in Price who soils himself when he sees pinstripes and Porcello, he's either feast of famine.

And their bullpen is pathetic; they won 108 games, yet there is not a single guy out there I'd trust in a high leverage situation.

Offensively, JD Martinez is in some sort of power funk.

Gashouse Gorillas in 4.

A few things:

First, a tip of the cap to the A's. They won 97 games with a payroll of $80 mil, a stadium that is older than most of us on this forum and no true No. 1 starting pitcher on their staff.

Second, I loved hearing the Yankees fans chanting "we want Boston" last night. All I can say to that is be careful what you wish for.

Last but not least, a big welcome back to George. He was super supportive during the Giants's World Series runs (along with other on this thread) and I hope to pay that back now as the Sox make their play for a championship.

This is an amazing top of the 9th in Milwaukee. They have given this game away, after being in control for 8 innings.

Tonight was a no doubter in LA. Of the four teams remaining I’m partial to the Dodgers. The uniform is classic, their stadium is one of the best and they still have an organist. I hate the rock music constantly blaring at many stadiums today.
