2018 Baseball season (3 Viewers)

On the tracker list I posted last week there are only five Os who haven’t signed with a team.
Right. 5 out of 8 are unsigned. 2 got minor-league contracts, and 1, Tillman resigned with the O's on a 1 year contract. -- Al

One of them is the Os fans’ favorite whipping boy, Ubaldo Jimenez. He’s probably a long shot to get signed.

Brian Cashman gets my vote for comedian of the year, or better yet, he should be up for an Oscar for his comments today; "The Red Sox won the division, not us, they are the champs and we have to get past them...............we're the little train that could"....................

The what?

Is he ****ting me or what?

They're going to hit 4,000 home runs this year, anything short of getting to the WS will be a huge failure.

He's one funny guy.

When your payroll is $200 mil you are not allowed to refer to yourself as the little train that could.

Heard Tim Lincecum's showcase tryout went well today. Over half the teams had reps in attendance and it was said he hit 90-93 on the gun. Hope it gets him a job. -- Al

It looks like he will be signing a 1 year deal with the Rangers to come out of the bullpen. He may even have a shot at becoming their closer as he position is open.

Good for him. At this stage of his game, the pen sounds like the place to be as he can take his remaining arm strength and that all-or-nothing delivery style and throw all he's got into an inning or two without worrying about going 6 innings. Hope he does well. -- Al

This gets more interesting by the day. The last day of spring training is March 27 and opening day for every team is March 29. That is just over 3 weeks away and yet there are so many unsigned "big" names.

It is amazing and getting more so everyday. Never thought Arrieta would still be unsigned this late. -- Al

Dare I even suggest it Al???
I've thought the same thing, Sammy. Lot of local talk about the Nats trying to land him for a couple of years, but no reason the O's couldn't give it a go, maybe for 3 years. Still, Arrieta will want close to $20 mil per year and that is more than the O's want to go. I'm betting Arrieta will have to come down on the length of a contract but may stand firm on the yearly figure. Arrieta to the O's would certainly put them back in the mix in the AL East. They have made only one real move to help the starting rotation (resigning Tillman wasn't it) and still are in need of at least a couple of SP's and it's getting near go time. I would love to see Arrieta come home, if not to the O's, maybe to DC. For Arrieta to be of use for the whole season, he needs to sign soon, as in yesterday. Even so, Arrieta getting a late start might leave him a bit fresher near the end of the season... -- Al

Moustakas signed with the Royals for $5.5 mil. That seems like a bargain for a guy who hit 38 HRs last year?

It's a steal. He's another one that overestimated/misread his value in this seasons FA market. He turned down his teams $17.5 million qualifying offer in order to go FA. Cost him a lot of money. -- Al

In the short run. The problem is the qualifying offer. If teams sign a free agent who turned down a QO, it costs them a 1st round pick and teams don’t want to surrender that pick. However, the Royals can’t make him a QO again so if he has a good year in 2018 he will reap the rewards.

I’m sure that during the next CBA negotiations the union will try to get rid of the QO or soften its impact.

OK. O's are 15 games into spring training with Opening Day on March 29, 19 days away. O's have pinned a huge hope on the performance of Tillman and Cashner as essential cogs in their SP rotation and yet neither of them have made an appearance in a game to date. Even the stalwarts, Bundy and Gausman, have made minimal showings, each having 4.1 innings total in the 2 games they have each been in. I hope someone knows what they are doing with Cashner and Tillman because there isn't a whole lot of time to get these guys work. All this and there is still no movement on who a #5 starter might be or who additional SP's might be. I am getting a might nervous over the state of the O's SP simply because there has not been much in the way of visible improvement. Going to be a lot of pressure on the pitchers in the next 19 days... -- Al

Arrieta to Phillies: three years for $75 Million.
A lot of money for a 32 year old pitcher whose numbers are on a steady slide down. I figured him for about $20 mil a year. Sorry the O's couldn't get him but that money was a lot more than they could/would pay and the same for the Nats, who sure as heck weren't going to pay a #3 starter more than their #1 and #2 are making. -- Al

I think he waited as long as he could and he realized he was not going to get a 5 year deal. $75 mil is nothing to sneeze at but it is a lot less than the $125 he was reportedly seeking.

10 days to Opening Day...providing the Nor'easters stop...and the snow stops... -- Al
