2019-2020 Hot Stove League (3 Viewers)

Sorry to see that Tiger's great Al Kaline has passed away at age 85. RIP, Al. He was a pleasure to watch. -- Al

Strange idea being floated to play all the MLB games in Arizona with no fans. I suppose that would at least get things rolling back to normal.

MLB Network replayed some of the 1968 WS games this past week.

It was actually really interesting and worth a watch.

Al:

I have really enjoyed the games/series that MLB Network has been playing.

One side note, I never knew that certain famous broadcasters called baseball games. Brent Musburger and Kieth Jackson just to name a couple.

Those two were pretty awful; they were better suited to football. Jackson was the play by play person for the 1986 NLCS and it made for hard listening. On the other hand Vin Scully and Curt Gowdy were delights.

Even though he was the Dodger’s voice, in my opinion Vin Scully is the GOAT of broadcasting.

Plus he was on the microphone for “The Catch”, the greatest moment in Niner history!

Consider this: at the third and deciding game of the 1951 playoffs for the National League title, the following broadcasters were present (different stations, of course): Russ Hodges (probably the most famous call of all time), Ernie Harrell and Red Barber. There is also a possibility that Harry Caray was at the game. Red Barber later called Hodges’ call unprofessional; he’d be shocked by what takes place today. I used to listen to the old Redhead in the 60s, until the Yankees let him go. He was great, of course. I was never a fan of Mel Allen’s folksy style but many loved that style and he, too, is part of the Hall of Fame.

Why players are objecting to MLB’s requests.

Although baseball didn’t know in April the length of the shutdown and had probably only started to formulate plans to address the shutdown, they should have been talking to the players as soon as possible, as partners. The odds seem to be fairly long that there will be a season this year. At the very least, this will allow both sides to have plans in place for 2021.

Good article. Thanks for posting it. -- Al

I don’t know what baseball will ultimately do but playing in just a few locations would be very telling for statistics as MLB is the onIy sport of the 4 major sports that offers different field/court/rink dimensions for each franchise among the 30 teams.

One stat recently showed the Barry Bonds would have finished his career with 180 less home runs without the short left field provided (built) for him at Pac-Bell park.

I think TV viewers can get used to games with no fans. It probably doesn't happen, though, due to greed. The owners pitched an absurd deal that would have cut the salaries of higher paid players by something like 85%. Not promising. I do think the NBA and NHL might give it a go, though.
