2019-2020 Hot Stove League (4 Viewers)

Yep. As of 4pm today, all spring training games suspended and the start of the regular season delayed by at least 2 weeks. -- Al
I would expect this 2 weeks to stretch through April, at least, unless something very positive occurs regarding the virus crisis. -- Al

Question: Hysteria or Vigilance (better safe than sorry at any cost)? Which is it?

How does this compare to influenza (e.g. Sars, Swine, H1N1)? Is comparing the numbers to Coronavirus appropriate? If not, why?

Does even asking this question, dangerous and demonstrates lack of compassion, ignorance and even worse contempt of others?

"The Medias Role": Benevolent, Informative and impartial (To Contain Spread & Reduce Deaths) or Peddlers of Fear (thus Maximizing Ad Revenue & Their Influence)

Are businesses curtailing business and sometimes closing (e.g. MLB, NBA, NCAA, Travel, etc.) because of benevolence & care or fear of in dangering their "Brand" (being callus/ greedy), lowering future revenues and opening themselves up to possible liability suites?

Are these questions moot; because public health & safety cannot be calculated like some "Cost Benefit Analysis"...Saving lives is the only true reward regardless of costs in terms of money, jobs, economy, etc.?

Which is it?

I watched the MLB Network Special about Tony Gwynn last night.

i knew of his hitting prowess but I never knew what an incredible person he was. From taking a pay cut to stay with San Diego to his interaction with fans I doubt we will see another like him.

At this point, I would not be surprised to see the NBA and NHL seasons cancelled.

MLB will probably if they are lucky play a 100 game season if at all.

The NFL will have a late start and probably a shortened season too.

At this point, sports are way, way, beyond secondary as they should be.

If nothing else, what is going on puts sports in it's proper perspective...…………...

Baseball has some flexibility since the season is so long, then again it is limited by the fact that it is a terrible sport to play and watch once the weather gets cold.

Well, there goes the season and I don’t mean because of the Coronavirus: Syndergaard has a tear in his UCL.

Brad, hadn't heard this. That really sucks. When and how did it happen? -- Al

Al, according to press reports, he had been experiencing elbow pain before the corona virus stopped spring training activities and when the pain didn’t go away, he was examined and had a MRI, which showed a tear. The tear was confirmed in a second opinion. Surgery is expected to be performed this week and he probably won’t be back until the summer of 2021, at the earliest.

Thanks for the answer, Brad. The way things appear to be going, it's not the worst case of timing possible, but it still sucks. He could be back by early 2021 or maybe mid-season at the latest. -- Al

Al, it seems to be a hazard of the profession.

Some ideas being floated for MLB if the season gets a delayed start. Like playing seven inning double header games or playing the season into December. It's too bad they don't get this creative to improve the game under normal circumstances. The seven inning game would be a god send to shorten games. Shorten the season to 120 or so games and limit the number of pitching changes.

If the season is played, they may have no choice but to limit the number of games. The number of pitching changes were going to be reduced in any event; under a new rule effective this year, a relief pitcher has to face a minimum of three batters.

If they are lucky, the season will start in late June, maybe even the 4th of July as opening day.

I'm sure they'll try to cram 100 games into three months, then playoffs, the season will stretch towards November.

What happens if this virus comes back like doctors claim it will in the Fall; what if they have to suspend the season due to gatherings being shut down again?

Just bag the season.

And the NFL should as well, just shut down sports altogether.

I think most sports have talked about playing games without fans.

i don’t know why, but of all of the sports, I feel like the strangest one to be played in empty stadiums/arenas would baseball.

People could use a distraction so if they can play any sports this year, they should, even if the virus comes back, which we don’t know for a certainty.
