2020-2021 Hot Stove League (2 Viewers)

I didn't notice this in last night's game...
or ever before for that matter in any of his outings...
but that doesn't mean it's not true...
talking about Lance McCullers Jr....an Astro's pitcher...

a friend of mine that is a heavy Astro's baseball fan...
like George...Al...Brad and Jason...more a student of the game than I will ever be...
told me that Lance McCullers Jr....always touches his hair a lot when he pitches...claiming he always has...

he told me McCullers relies on his curve ball a lot...but uncannily threw very few last night...
then my friend claiming the curve ball needs the most spin (his opinion) and could really benefit from a foreign substance to be more effective...
believed he may have been doctoring the ball with a substance in his hair for a long time...

the post game talk show even mentioned his reluctance to throw a curve ball last night...
so.............I don't know...
maybe McCuller's has been doctoring the ball...

not trying to push a conspiracy theory...
but it seems like a lot of pitchers have long hair now that I think about it...
food for thought...

I guess at this point nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

Pitchers doctoring the ball is as old as time, Gaylord Perry was famous for it, we had a kid on our high school team, big tall lefty who threw absolute gas, but also had an incredible breaking ball, he used to put vaseline on the back of his neck/inside the bill of his ballcap, wherever and whatever it took...................he went to the University of Maine back when they were an East Coast powerhouse, got drafted but never made it to the show.............................he hit a ball one time in a playoff game that landed on our practice football field that was next to the regular football field over the baseball fence in left center, just a titanic blast....................

The O's are in a real slide to oblivion. On May 5 the O's were a respectable 15-16 and things looked hopeful. Since then the O's have gone 7-29 and the whole season has gone dark and ineffective starting pitching is the main culprit. John Means is a legitimate All-Star caliber pitcher with a 4-2 record and a 2.28 ERA. The other 4 O's SPs are a disaster, though a couple have showed flashes of promise. Zimmermann (4-4, 4.83), Lopez (2-7, 5.64), Kremer (0-6, 6.65), and Harvey (3-8, 7.76), are a combined 9-25 with a combined ERA of 6.14, simply terrible numbers. With Means' 2.28 ERA rolled in, O's SP has a 5.23 ERA, still not competitive. This rebuilding can be rough and this season will probably get worse but the O's have some decent position players and there is help being developed in the minors, so it's just a matter of putting up with bad baseball for the rest of this season and hoping for better in 2022. Wait 'till next year. -- Al

Bad to worse. O's lost 10-3 this afternoon, (Lopez falling to 2-8, 5.95 ERA), making it 8 straight losses (after a 14 game losing streak in May) and it was their 19 straight road loss. Nothing going right... {sm2} -- Al

Al...that is brutal...if you're watching them...you're a good fan to hang in there !!!

the Astro's have no room to be outraged...
but LA and NY fans may get taken down a notch if this is proven...
let the bells toll and beat the trashcan drums slowly...

here is some of the follow up on that...
seems like nothing conclusive to me...
no named sources or proof on all his allegations...
LA...NYY...nothing concrete...
just a bunch of unsubstantiated talk...

from his own Twitter account...

I deeply regret everything that I said — it has turned my life upside down. It was a mistake, and I should not have reported on unfounded allegations. I sincerely apologize to all of those impacted — it should not have happened, and it will not happen again. Stick to stats.

MLB should send them to Triple A, but Triple A would send them back.

Mike, between the O's and the Nats, I'm not having a good year. At least it's a full season and there is some good pitching being exhibited around MLB. -- Al

Al:

The Giants are in first and I am not having a good year.

I can only recognize 2 of their every day players, Crawford and Posey. I can't help but feel like a collapse and letdown is inevitable.

Baseball fans, we are never happy.................

Jason, I see that the Giants are now 45-25 after 70 games. This is the 2nd best start after 70 games that the Giants have had since moving to SF. Pretty impressive, but I certainly understand the whole 'Sword of Damocles' thing baseball fans have. With my teams, I live under the same sword.{sm3} -- Al

Carl Yastrzemski's Grandson is on the team; I've always been a Giants fan since I was a kid, this gives me further reason to follow the team.

so...
I'm watching the Astros in Baltimore tonight...
top of the 8th...
7-0...
and it's pouring a heavy rainstorm...
the field is actually flooding in spots...

I was gonna say somebody is gonna get hurt...
but they just stopped the game...

Ridiculous display of Umpire stupidity, eh? What was the point of playing in such a downpour with the field flooding? The head Ump should be horsewhipped. Now they're getting ready to try and resume play. I see they are issuing life preservers to the outfielders... {sm3} -- Al

I'm thinking that MLB may need to fine tune this whole checking the pitcher for foreign substances thing. Scherzer got checked 3 times last night, once in the middle of an inning on Girardi's request. The flow of the game was interrupted, bad feelings leading to Girardi getting ejected, and nothing found. The whole situation can be taken advantage of by opposing managers to disrupt a pitcher's concentration in crucial moments. -- Al

The Mets have until now weathered the injury storm but the dam may have broken. Their fifth starter now has to have TJ surgery, two relievers just went on the IL and Stroman had to come out last night after injuring his hip. Only so many injuries you can suffer before it takes a toll.

Absolutely staggering the injuries the Mets have had to deal with. I suppose it happens to all teams, but the Mets have been really snake-bitten. -- Al

Al...

lol...yea...life preservers...they actually needed them more on the infield...there were some huge puddle...I was afraid someone would get a hit and get hurt running the bases...

if they didn't resume to finish all 9 innings...wouldn't they have called the game as they had already finished 5+ innings?

Al...

agreed...checking a pitcher who's in a groove...
does disrupt the flow of his momentum...
this is a strategy used both in the NBA and NFL...
in the form of a timeout to slow down the momentum of your opponent...

I thought a pitcher could only be checked two times in an outing...
how was Scherzer checked 3 times for a foreign substance?
