Al...

lol...yea...life preservers...they actually needed them more on the infield...there were some huge puddle...I was afraid someone would get a hit and get hurt running the bases...

if they didn't resume to finish all 9 innings...wouldn't they have called the game as they had already finished 5+ innings?
Mike, yes the game was official once it completed 5 innings. Would have gone in the books at whatever point the game was when called. The poor O's pitcher that had to pitch in the worst of the downpour got DFA'ed last night. What a game to go out on.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Al...

agreed...checking a pitcher who's in a groove...
does disrupt the flow of his momentum...
this is a strategy used both in the NBA and NFL...
in the form of a timeout to slow down the momentum of your opponent...

I thought a pitcher could only be checked two times in an outing...
how was Scherzer checked 3 times for a foreign substance?
Good question. One I can't answer but one that the game announcers wondered about as well. My guess would be that the first 2 times Max was checked was just routine by the umps. The third time was at Girardi's request which brought on all the arguing and Girardi's eventual ejection when he challenged Max to come out and fight. Good thing the umps held Girardi back.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Don't know how long it will last but the Nats are finally playing decent baseball. They moved to within a game of .500 this afternoon with a 13-12 win over Philly. Not exactly the pitching duel that the Nats have lived or died with most of the season, but they'll take it. Noteworthy game for the fact that both teams has a player hit a 3-run Hr and another hit a GS, the first time this has happened in MLB history. Best sign for the Nats is that they never gave up in this game and came back to win after trailing 5-0, 9-5, and 12-11 (in the 9th). It was a good win. -- Al

Woo-hoo! Only took 72 games for the Nats to reach .500. May not last but I'll take what I can get. -- Al

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish!
Very much hoping for a 2019 type turnaround. The annual slow start under Martinez has been dealt with again as the Nats achieved a 26-34 start (same as the 2020 final record), before starting to turn around 12 games ago as the Nats have been 10-2 since. All of this is due, in no small part, to the sudden hitting streak Schwarber has embarked on, with his 8 Hrs in the last 5 games. The question is what happens when Schwarbs cools off. Surprisingly, the Nats have been getting good SP from no-names like Ross and Fedde to compliment Mad Max and the resurgent Corbin. I expect Rizzo will be a buyer at the trade deadline if the Nats can keep this surge up. If not... -- Al

It's tough being an O's fan but they did manage to beat Toronto last night to bust their 20 game road game losing streak. That leaves them 9-36 in their last 45 games. Pretty grim. But at least they are not the Diamondbacks who lost last night to leave them with a 6-43 record in their last 49 games. THAT is depressing. Fans are a dedicated and slightly insane group of people... -- Al

Red Sox beat the Yankees today, sweeping them for the second time this year, the RS are now in first place after the Angels beat the Rays.

This is a fun team to watch, no doubt about it.

What I love most is had 2004/2007/2013/2018 not happened, as a lifelong RS fan, I'd be sitting here saying "Yeah great, they're in first place, but it's the end of June, I've seen this movie before and it doesn't end well"................but 2004/2007/2013/2018 all did happen, so this is like playing with house money.

This team/organization owes me nothing, but after the horrendous year last year, this is great to see.

The Nats Kyle Schwarber is on an incredible hot streak. He was moved to the lead-off position in the batting order some 17 games ago and has since hit 15 Hrs, with 26 RBIs in those 17 games. He leads MLB in Hrs for June and has hit 11 Hrs in his last 9 games, a streak only equaled by the Senators Frank Howard in 1968 when he hit 10 Hrs in 6 games (with 11 HRs in 9 games overall). Been a wild ride and he has dragged the Nats back to respectability in the process. Only hope the balloon doesn't burst for the Nats once Schwarber cools off. -- Al

Nats SS Trei Turner turned 28 years of age today and he celebrated by hitting for the cycle against Tampa. It is the third time in his career that he has hit for the cycle, tied for the most all-time by any player. He also reached 100 hits on the season and leads MLB in multi-hit games, including most 3-hit and 4-hit games. The man deserves to be the starting All-star SS, popularity vote be darned. -- Al

So at the halfway point of the season, the Boston Red Sox are:

- at 51 wins (51-31)
- 3.5 up over 2nd place TB
- 9.0 up over NY

And Houck is coming along.

Sale looks phenomenal in his rehab.

And Duran is one of the most electric players in the minors right now.

I don't think Sox fans could have asked for anything close to this heading into the season considering how horrible they were last year.

Cora is a difference maker as is their GM, kudos to both.

And yet, the baseball pundits won't give them credit, saying things like they are playing well now, but...or, they might be for real. Wonder what it takes to convince. -- Al

Winning a World Series maybe?

I'll take it..................;)...............

Yankees lose 8-3 to the Mets today, fall 10 games behind the Red Sox for first place in the AL East.

Four more games out/14GB and they'll have the Red Sox right where they want them.

That choke job by the Red Sox in 1978 was beyond pathetic, how on earth do you blow a 14 game lead in the division?

So pre 2004 Red Sox.

is this a by-product of Covid...
or is it usual and customary...

or is it just a schedule fluke?

have any other teams faced this type of schedule this year?

Houston just finished 20 games in 20 days...
grueling schedule...
was also scheduled 27 of the last 28 days on top of that...

they seem to need to rest their starters more than I thought would be necessary if they had a day off here and there...

is this type of scheduling pretty customary?

they fielded some lineups through this stretch with players I have not seen before...

Mike, the heavy schedule is pretty normal for MLB once they get to June. Nats had 29 scheduled games in June (played 28) and from May 25 through June 30 (37 days), we had 35 games. Our pitching staff is a shambles. -- Al

Al...yea...
a couple of extra inning games back to back...
and you have pretty much ruined your relief staff for a few days...

I don’t know how many games in a row Mets have to play but it’s a lot because of rainouts.

Players, especially pitchers, are resting more because of last year.

The Nats blew an 8-0 lead to lose to the Padres by, among other things, giving up the first grand slam homer to a relief pitcher since 1985. That's a real soul crusher.
