2020 NHL Season and Playoffs (1 Viewer)

From a profit standpoint, with a season ticket base that sold out in 12 minutes, Seattle did great.

From a competitive standpoint, with a bunch of low level salary picks, Seattle did terrible.

I totally agree. Of the 30 players selected I heard of only 6. The others were completely unknown to me.
I also suspected that since they were sold out ticket wise that they might go this route.
Even if they sign a few big ticket free agents I don't see this team doing anything in the standings.

As long as I've been following sports, expansion teams get the dregs of other teams and they've been hot garbage as a result; something happened with Vegas, I skimmed over an article about it, something about they paid 500 million to come into the league, so a combination of the rules being bent regarding trades and such and GM's not being familiar with how the draft worked and it allowed them to assemble a powerhouse team.

Yeah; that seems fair to the rest of the league, hand them a loaded roster because they paid a **** ton of money to come into the league.

Talk about a half assed scenario.

Vegas was the blueprint on how an expansion team can win immediately, draft (and pay) highly touted but expensive players.

They had a ravenous fan base and rewarded them with a winner.

Most expansion teams don’t do that as they’d prefer to ride the wave of being the newest attraction in town which they think gives them license to produce a low grade but profitable team.

Yes this was 50 plus years ago and times were so much different. But the Blues when they came into the NHL along with 5 other expansion teams in 1967 drafted mostly older, experienced players. Guess what the first 3 years in the league they went to the Stanley Cup Finals. Yes the format was different, But that created a huge fan base.
Since I gave up the nfl a few years ago when they started this kneeling crap. Does the NFL team in Vegas are they the darlings like the Golden Knights are?

The Sharks were awful their first 15 years or so yet they continually sold out their home games with one of the lowest payrolls in the NHL.

Once the sellouts ended and the merchandise money started to run out ownership finally opened their pockets and paid for big time free agents.

The fan base is better educated now and ownership knows that if they don’t spend on payroll they will not see a return on their investment.

Phil Esposito has passed away. Another old school warrior gone.

I love the way ESPN all but ignored hockey for the last few years but mow that they have a contract for broadcasting games starting in 2021 NHL "headlines" are now constantly part of Sportscenter.
