In early September of 1862, the Army of Northern Virginia (ANV) moved north as its first invasion of states that had not succeeded. The invasion would ultimately lead to the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg on September 17th, 1862. On or about September 12th, 1862, two events occurred that are significant to the telling of the story of the battle of Antietam/ Sharpsburg. First is the issuance of Special Order 191 Army of Northern Virginia, also known as the "Lost Order" or "Lost Dispatch" and the other is an image taken of the Army of Northern Virginia under arms in column. The invading Confederates were described by one observer as "a lean and hungry set of wolves." Jacob Engelbrecht, a civilian wrote that "Many [Confederate soldiers] were barefooted, and some had one shoe & one barefoot-they really looked "Ragged and tough." Per the Historical Society of Frederick County, "the Confederate column paused at the corner of Market and Patrick streets (an intersection known as the Square Corner) in Frederick, Maryland. This image was probably taken on September 12, 1862, two days prior to the Battle of South Mountain, by an unknown photographer who was perched on the second floor above Jacob Rosenstock's Dry Good & Clothing Store. This is believed to be the only extant photograph of Confederate soldiers marching in columns." I used this war time image as a model for this diorama of a Confederate column or a column of "lean and hungry set of wolves" moving through Frederick. One other note, in the summer of 1863, the ANV would conduct a second invasion and during this move north, the 2nd Maryland CSA would meet a mongrel stray dog that they would adopt as their mascot. They named the dog Grace, and it would accompany the regiment all the way to the battle of Gettysburg. I added the WB marching figure with a dog in remembrance of Grace and the 2nd Maryland CSA. I also included an image of the whole diorama before editing. Hope you like it. Thx Chris
