A Sad Day in American History (3 Viewers)

I for one don't want this thread closed...

I have seen arguments over toy soldier manufacturers that make this thread pale in comparison...

as long as personal opinions don't turn into sparring bouts...let it be...it's informative...
politely state your post and don't attack others...
some individuals just can't understand that not everyone will agree with their opinions...
then they lose their cool and become combative and insulting...
bar those people...

and as stated over and over...
if this thread bothers you...
don't click on it...
if you find that impossible to do...
then maybe you are one of those people that needs to be barred form it...

if you tuned into a show you didn't like on your tv...
you would just change the channel...
right?
do that here...

Then what’s the point of having rules? If the thread is allowed to continue, then the no politics rule should be removed.

after a self imposed ban and a re-entry to this thread...
your agenda really seems to deprive everyone else of enjoying this thread because you don't like it...

the politics of toy soldier manufacturers is a common theme on here...
those threads get locked down when people get ugly with each other...

those people know who they are...
they get overly inflamed over someone else's opinion and blow up...
they just seem to want to argue constantly...
and ruin threads for everyone else...
everyone on here knows who these people are...
it's easy to be civil if they try to be polite...

seems easy enough to avoid this thread and not read it if someone feels it's offensive to them...
is it really that hard to let people enjoy this thread?

they can always just flip the channel and don't participate...

The question is, again, what’s the point of having rules if you don’t enforce them.

If members wish to discuss, in the absence of moderation they should for it's obvious the rules are not being applied.

There is a reason there is a no politics discussion rule.

Since I’ve said what I had to say, I will say no more.

As Clausewitz said, "War is the continuation of politics by other means."

Our hobby is based on history, military history and Wars.
We discussed the Civil War and the flags, statues and memorials that were controversial.

The moderators allowed a discussion on Covid because of it relevance today, even in affecting our hobby.
I think the events of last week could be as significant as the Boston Tea Party, Lexington and Concord and the shelling of Fort Sumter.....should we not discuss them?
Unfortunately we have many emotions running high in our politics and its difficult for people not to bring those to our discussions.

I agree that political discussions on our forum should be very limited and certainly cut off if they get into personal attacks or propaganda.
Let's remember that our hobby by its nature is controversial. I was called a war monger by someone who saw my collection. Nazi figures, Confederate figures, European Imperialist figures, WWII Japanese figures and on and on are controversial and political. It is up to us to put our hobby and its representation of history in perspective. We love history, we enjoy the art of the military miniature and for some it is a link with our youth. Many of us use our hobby to teach our children, grandchildren and young students about history. That means that sometimes we must talk about the politics that caused conflicts and wars.

I was hoping we could discuss this event with our focus on the historical significance and including its similarity to other historical events around the world.
If the consensus is to delete that's fine with me.

Brad, if the moderators wish to use their discretion in this matter who are we to argue.

The threads been running fine and we're all adults here having a chat, no drama's.

I was disappointed to see those early deletions which still remain a mystery to me, however lets move on.

At the moment the only one rocking the boat in this thread currently is you.

You've made your point several times now and we all get it.

Maybe follow your own suggestion and avoid the page if its causing you so much grief.

Cheers.

I pulled those initial posts to try and halt any nastiness. Marco55 posted a knee jerk reaction to the initial post which I didn't think was warranted and I deleted the others as they were in response to that. Please remember mods are volunteers and were are human to and just trying to do our best. I am sorry there are some that don't agree with the posts that I deleted but I did what I felt was best. Sometimes you just can't win.

Scott...

I never got to read them...
but always assumed whoever deleted them...
thought they were overly inflammatory and were prone to causing a response of similar antagonism...
I think the mods do a great job and as long as we are civil...
you will allow the discussion to continue...

Like my friend Mike, I did not have an opportunity to read the deleted posts, and I have not been offended by any of the posts on this thread, which I believe has been a rationale discussion of an important historical event. I agree with Mike that the the moderators have done a good job as far as I can see.

I was about to reference Clausewitz's quote; "War is the continuation of politics by other means", when I noticed Rich had already mentioned it.

I'm not keen on political discussions myself however politics is involved in so many aspects of our lives it seems an overreaction to ban all political discussion. The moderating actions are currently much less than the earlier days on the forum. Years ago the moderators were often to quick to delete posts etc when they should have let members work through their differences over time. In real life men tend to anger quickly in a confrontation, but then they usually calm down, given the opportunity, and find a resolution.

If you don't like to be involved in heated forum discussions, you don't have to quit the forum, but maybe best if you avoid the thread, at least for a while. BTW, I've often thought I was unfairly treated by the mods, sometimes things don't go your way, that's life.

The thing I like about this forum is that there are people here from all parts of the world and from all kinds of backgrounds united by a particular hobby and an interest in history. Having been on here for 15 years you get to know certain people and value their opinions.

Whilst I am always mindful of the wishes of the owner and appreciate the mods good work I have found the discussion very interesting. I don't agree with all the opinions of some people but it is still good to get a different view point. Not only that but in some cases might learn something that might otherwise not have been discovered.

America is terribly divided at this time and it is of importance to all of us. I heard a comment yesterday that rang true. You can have a sore loser (ie. Trump) but you can also have a sore winner (in this case the discussion was more about Pelosi than Biden). Whilst some here quite obviously have differing political opinions polite discussion can help people understand both sides.

A very nice and important sentiment! America needs to heal and that healing can start with each one of us.

All,

AND if this thread did get shut down what are we going to do? Sue them for violating our freedom of speech (here in the US that is)?

Nope, its a privilege to be apart of this forum and since we don't own it we don't call the shots.

So, to all those who ha's out there (not on this forum) who are decrying twitter, facebook and other platforms for violating their "rights" of freedom of speech....you can go around the corner and pound sand.

We are guests on this forum and share common likes and a common hobby. Any guest can get kick out of the hotel and banned for life.

So, this is a still a "Sad day in American History" as our President has been impeached again and twice in one term. God Save the United States of America and I pray so that our dignity as a nation will be restored in the future with future Presidents and learn something from this episode of history. By gawd we have a long way to go.

Man, what way to start the New Year...

John from Texas

Some of those Tweets were unbelievable, initially I thought his account had been hacked by Russia or China. Imo it would be best if future Presidents and Political leaders in general avoided making offhand comments on social media. Who knows what they will post if they're angry about something or had to many whiskeys, I mean we see the results of that here sometimes, it's usually not pretty {eek3}

Thanks Britfarmer for the feedback which is great appreciated as is all the work by the moderators & TF in keeping the forum running.

Hopefully Mark will return soon once the dust has settled?

Cheers.

Gentle Friends,

We are living through a tense and critical time. Due to the significance of recent events, we let this thread continue, but now, sadly, it has reached a point at which serious partisanship begins to emerge. As a result, I am compelled to close the thread.

Thanks for your understanding.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat
