Well you are missing some great ones mate but of course that is up to you. IMHO, you should at least see Unforgiven.I've only seen 4 out of the 20 movies listed and have no interest in seeing the remaining 16.
I have to agree with Reb about "There Will Be Blood." What was the point of the movie? To show the life of a wildcatter? There was certainly no plot. Great acting performance but otherwise a waste of money.
I think your pals are wee bit off on this one Reb. NCFOM is never going to be one of my favorites and it does have an odd ending but overall it is well worth seeing. It does have some quite good acting but then I have met Tommy Lee and I have a soft spot of his movies. In addition to being a great actor, he is a right fine horseman. The only one I have not seen is No Country for Old Men -but there are at least six on the list I wish I hadn't seen-A description of "pretty dreadful" immediately comes to mind and God knows how the academy members cast their votes-it's got to be rigged either that or these so-called voting actors/directors etc know diddlysquat on what constitutes a great movie
No I shall not mention what was on my "dreadful" list as they maybe some forum members favorites.
The one film I have not seen from the list is for the very good reason that a couple of pals both said that the ending of this movie is such a big let down they thought of asking for their money back-this is now reflected in DVD sales of the movie here in the UK (only being released here a month ago) is now appearing in the bargain bin. Always a good sign of a not so good movie let alone an Academy Award Winner if you get my drift.
Watch for "There will be blood" heading in the same direction- which has to be the most pointless film I have ever seen in the last 20 years and that includes the Seagal epics.

I am with you on There Will Be Blood; I nearly feel asleep watching it. I would be interested in your academy dogs list thougheven if they are some of my favorites you won't hurt my feelings.
I certainly don't want to defend the academy too much, there are so many actors and films that never got the recognition they deserve.

Well, all I can say is that NCFOM is a different kettle of fish; mostly because the writing is better. I am not trying to defend its award, only suggesting that is it worth your time. I would not say that about "Blood", as much as I also like Daniel Day Lewis.Bill
...On your recommendation I might give NCFOM a watch as Tommy is indeed an extremely good actor but then again so is Day Lewis but just take "There Will be Blood" and all the good acting thrown on screen will never- in a thousand years- get me to move that turkey onto my list of well deserved Academy Winners. Those Hollywood dumbos who voted for that bucket of slops deserve to be shot or at the very least their Equity membership cards confiscated.

Indeed I have, two greats there.Yo Trooper, have to agree Tommy Lee is one excellent actor, dont know if you ever saw "Lonesome Dove" have it on DVD shows also what a great horseman he is, and one of the all time great westerns movies, also stars Robert Duvall.
Bernard.
I haven't been able to get beyond the title and summary. For starters, the word patient is a bit chilling to me; I know hospitals are a necessary evil but I would do anything to avoid being in or watching scenes from one. Yes I know that is a personal weakness.I'm surprised by how many of you have not seen The English Patient as it does after all have a World War II setting. Laszlo Almasy, the patient, was actually a real person, although based upon Bierman and Smith's book, The Battle of Alamein, there was not that much resemblance between the novel and the facts. Nonetheless, quite an interesting movie, one I've watched many times.
Ah thanks for that clarification Brad. Now I will have to see it.I agree with you about hospitals; being in one makes me uncomfortable. This one actually doesn't take place in a hospital but in an Italian villa where Almasy is taken care of. He then has flashbacks around which most of the movie is centered.
Ah thanks for that clarification Brad. Now I will have to see it.
Errrr, well that puts a different face on it; having walked away from one and nearly avoided a few more, plane crashes are not my favorite entertainment scene but sounds like a movie that should be seen any way. You might give NCFOM at try as well. I wouldn't buy it but I will spot you the rental if you really think it was not at least worth a watch. The film also has one of the most realistic plane crashes ever to be put on celluloid and I believe without a hint of CGI.
Louis.......Oh come on! Have you never enjoyed the Blockbuster experience?
When you quietly walk thru the door......they all yell "Hi" which usually scares
the hell out of you!
In their massive New Release section are "Blockbuster Exclusives" titles so
bad other rental places won't carry them! Old titles re-released and designed
to catch you......(I picked up a Jet Lee title that looked interesting......when
speaking to the daughter I learned it had been released in 1998)
And my favorite about 35 Steven Segal titles which went straight to DVD. I
used to be a big Steven Segal fan....before he began wearing a girdle (he
must be 350lbs now).
Lastely you miss being chastised by the staff I am in their "Club" so I
get special deals such as come in today and rent any movie for $2.99.....
being in this club also allows me to get a free library (old crappy) movie if I
rent a regular movie Mon-Wen.
When you walk up to the counter with your two movies and hand them the
coupon they announce "YOU CAN'T USE THIS WITH ANY OTHER OFFER"
I always enjoy being rebuked by the staff.
I always reply......."Well then I guess you can just put it back"
See what your missing!
Another favorite of mine......when you make a purchase and they ask you
"Would you like a bag"? I always reply....."No, just toss it out the door and I
will chase after it"
Spookily accurate if i may say!.Steven Segal and anything with the woman who played 'Phoebe' in friends.....strrrrrrrrrrrrraight to video!!
