We are very pleased to announce the final set in our coverage of the 8th Illinois Cavalry dismounted at Gettysburg, ACW038 Union Dismounted Horse Holder. Though not often depicted in miniature, a dismounted civil war cavalry unit used 25% of it's men to hold the horses back from the line while the other men in the regiment deployed for battle. We've done our ACW038 set with only two horses as this still provides the flavor of a horse holder without the added cost. We hope you agree that this is an absolutely striking set that really is a must have for ACW Civil War collections!

ACW038 Union Dismounted Cavalry Horse Holder - $199.95
Ships End March 2012

They are great. Gee First Legion are batting 99.94% Simmo.{sm4}

Looks great Matt. When do you plan to return to the Union? 2013.

Also, since 2013 will be the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, could you consider making a Lincoln figure for the anniversary?

Great horses...

Looking for to see the confederates’ troops....

I have said this before, and I will say once again.....This is the best release FL did for 2011, special the Confederates sets..

Excellent Release....Will make Civil War collectors quite happy...Well done First Legion

Another great release. I think the decision to have only two horses is a really good balance between price point and realism.

Very nice indeed. I wonder what will be next in the ACW series since the 8th Illinois is done.

I've been waiting for this one. I didn't expect it so soon.
Notice the stirrup hoods. Many manufactures just use a
plain stirrup. Way to go.

That is a very nice dismounted horse holder.Holding two, three or four horses is OK with me. However please inform the painters that the yellow stripe on the troopers trousers is just not appropriate.That is an element that only was worn by nco's (Sgts. and corporals) and even then in such a heavy attrition conflict like the ACW that feature was really not that common.Also tone down the number of troops depicted wearing knee high boots. That is a private purchase luxury not always affordable or available to much of the typical cavalryman. Also don't get seduced by placing crossed sabers and too much brass hardware on the hats of the troopers. Often times that brass was not available, never issued or fell off. Remember many of the cavalry units deployed at Gettysburg were state militia regiments. Otherwise your sculpture and execution is superb. I hope your summer ACW rollouts are Confederate cavalry. Seems like every time a manufacturer makes a Confederate line lately it is either infantry, artillery or leadership personalities. I firmly believe that their is a tremendous amount of pent up demand for this branch and side in both mounted and dismounted form.

Superb horse holder set that could be adopted for many ACW scenarios and as with all FL releases the sculpt and painting really is phenomenal especially the horse flesh. However, I have to agree with Jeff's comments, I found that the dismounted cavalry troopers were just a little too Hollywood. When I received my Union cavalry order-as much as I liked some of the troopers wearing their slouch hats they were an anachronism and just didn't look right for a civil war scene. Plus all of them wearing their sabres on a skirmish line would have been downright cumbersome. Then we had the dreaded yellow stripe down the pants and the knee flap boots-which as confirmed when I asked Mike (Mestell) if worn by Union troopers at all they would have been just to muck out the stables.

Now I am quite used to "ACW Hollywood" releases from certain manufacturers and normally ride with it without counting all the stitches on the uniforms. But I had high hopes for FL based on the figures all round quality and appearance. Subsequently, and with the utmost trepidation the miscreant figures were scheduled for surgery -as per pictures below- a very very scary decision as these figures are darn expensive-especially in the UK- but for me necessary to get that authentic Gettysburg cavalry look to what I believe to be some of the very best sculpted ACW figures on the market today.

I await in excited anticipation for the next batch of ACW releases from Matt and if I was a gambling man I'd put my bucks on the Iron Brigade. If it is -no doubt I'll be tempted- but I do feel we ACW collectors have been awash just recently with IB figures.

The foregoing comment brings to mind two expressions, one I learned from my mother as a youth and the other later on.

"Eyes that see not." In his post Matt said that Confederates would be next, which will be to your liking anyway :rolleyes2:

"D@mining with faint praise." The problem with the stripes is one that has been mentioned and discussed since the Union figures were first released. Unfortunately, as Matt has said, these were already cast and painted. He has indicated that forthcoming figures would not have similar kinds of issues. Thus, some of the hyperbole wasn't necessary and could have been handled privately by the cognoscenti.

At least the poses aren't the same boring ones we see war to war from a certain well known ACW manufacturer.

Just like our Lincoln spat best I keep quiet in future and stay in the basement

Ultimately, I recall we had no disagreement on our 16th President, but a difference in emphasis. Here there appears also to be a difference in emphasis.

I hear basements can be cold. Hopefully, you have purchased yourself a warm blanket and stocked up on many books.

Then, I would recommend that you take Allan Nevins' eight volume work on the Civil War: The Ordeal of the Union, The War for the Union and the Emergence of Lincoln. It should keep you two busy for a bit.

Oh no! Well I like it any way. I don't do dioramas and the Civil War bores
me. I'll just tell myself its 1875 Cavalry with an officer's bat boy holding
the officers horse. The officer probably had money and decked out his bat
boy in a one-off uniform for prestige. Nice stand alone. Could have put
a pile of horse droppings on the ground behind one of the horses. Just
for accuracy.

Actually, I think you'll also see another Union release in 2012 as well. As for a Lincoln figure, no plans of that for the time being, though I have no doubt that we'll eventually do one. Bigger fish to fry at the moment as the range needs to be filled out a bit first. The trouble with Lincoln is that if we do him correctly, everyone will say that he's out of scale because he's too tall. {sm4}

And while I'm here - nice conversions UKReb! A lot of folks are unbelievably reluctant to modify a factory produced figure for many different reasons. Reb has done some nice conversions and it's good to see him enjoying and personalizing his collection as always.

Bigger fish to fry then Lincoln?{eek3} There can be no bigger fish then him, with all due respect. Your blasphemy is forgiven :wink2:

No one has really made a good figure that captures him. Wouldn't you like to be the first?
