ACW070-ACW087 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry "Iron Brigade" (3 Viewers)

Nice looking figs and I will get some of these to augment my Iron Bgde collection. Too bad most have the knap sack. A common configuration in most ACW TS, but a mistake IMO. Chris

I agree about the knapsacks, but I can't recall whether the 2nd was wearing them or not. They did get rushed into battle from the road on this occasion.

I know some of the Regt dropped them, but I don't know specifically aboutthe 2nd. Will see if I can find anything later today. THey did load on the move, which caused straggling. Chris

As I've said elsewhere, would love to see some 14th Brooklyn/84th NY as this would pretty much round out day one at Gettysburg, unless you wanted some 11th Corps troops and some of Ewells troops too for the action to the north, or more Iron Brigade for the railroad cut and more Confederates for that action as well.

Day two would be up next, maybe Hoods Texans, the 20th Maine, Barksdales Mississippians, the 114th PA, 1st Minnesota and some Louisiana Tigers for Cemetary Hill....................

Would also like to see some Gettysburg structures such as the McPherson farm, Rose farm, Sherfy farm, Trostle farm and the gatehouse and some gun positions from cemetary hill.............

The Iron Brigade was marching in formation past the Cadori House and Farm on the Emmitsburg Road when they were ordered to advance quikly toward McPhearson's Ridge and Herbst Woods. From what I have read, I have gotten the impression that the orders were received so quickly that the troops did not have time to properly ground or stow their gear on Regimental Wagons . . . to have just haphazardly grounded the gear along the road or in the Cadori farm fields would have probably risked loosing it all. In reviewing the sculpt prtotypes I did recommend portraying the figures as to carrying knapsacks (with and without blankets), blanket rolls over the shoulder, and nothing at all . . . . all are represented on these figures and I am fine with this.

I did read in David Martin's Gettysburg July 1, p 121-122 two references to the 6th WI going into the fight wearing their knapsacks. So the same must be true of the 2nd. I would like more figs without the "baggage" to portray a "more usual" battle appearance. However, the figs do look good and I will be getting some of these. Chris

I just placed my first order with my supplier for ACW071 "NCO Standard Bearer", ACW073 "NCO", and ACW081 "Charging #2" . . . . . now the wait for their arrival . . . .

We think alike Mike. I am starting with the flagbearer, NCO, and charging and loading figure. I think my next batch will include John Burns because that is one I definitely don't want to miss. Still need to get the rest of those Britains fences though. I really like the Grim Harvest piece that came last week.

I have the ordnance returns for the Iron Brigade for 4Q1862, 1stQ1863, 2ndQ1863, and 3Q1863. For those that might be interested in developing a "company strength" collection of these figures I believe these ordnance returns give insight into the strength of each Company prior to Gettysburg. If my assumptions are correct, below is what I believe was troop strength of each Company within the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. The 2nd Quarter 1863 returns are probably the closest to actual troop strength just before the Gettysburg campaign. I find the significant change in numbers from 2Q83 to 3Q83 very interesting . . . Could this change be the result of the enormous casualties that the 2nd sufferd at Gettysburg? I also have the same information for the 6th WI, 7th WI, 19th IN, and 24th MI. The designation "N/A" indicates that the information was not available or reported.

Mike, I would certainly think those numbers are indeed due to Gettysburg, given that the 2nd had nearly 80% casualties. The Brigade was a shell of its former self after July 1.

Going by the numbers. Co H could be represented by the FL figures. Pretty cool.

The 2nd was mustered out in 1864 I believe after serving as Provost Guard due to casualties. Chris

Brad, it appears that some of the figures do have Company designation letters on the Corps Badge (red circle) on their hats. Perhaps the decision as to what Company these figures belong to will be decided for us.

Good eye Mike. I saw the Corp badge. But didn't notice the company designation. Amazing detail! Brad
