Hello Everyone,

I haven't posted in a couple of years. Anyway, thought I would share some of my new (and old) Alamo models and facade.

Here's my new 1/72 Alamo church building. I'm one west wall building away from completing the entire compound!

Here's the facade of a model I just made for an individual in San Antonio. I was given specific measurements to follow. It's roughly the same size as the K and C facade, so smaller than true 54mm or 60mm, but the figures still fit comfortably inside the door!

And here's another 1/72 scale I did 3 years ago of the Alamo when it had a police station attached to its south side between the transcept and baptistry.

Hope you enjoy the pics,

this is beautiful...you built all these yourself?
Thank you, Mike. Yes, sir, I did the artwork for the door and a friend of mine did the artwork for the niches and I had them laser engraved. Once that was completed I made molds and resin copies. This way I could match whatever damage was on the "real" Alamo. The columns, column bases, keystone over the door, entablature over the columns, etc. (basically everything else!) was scratchbuilt in styrene and balsa foam. I made molds and resin copies of all the main components for the facade, but still need to make a resin copy of the entire facade.

My problem is I can make resin copies of the smaller items, ie., columns, doors, etc., I'm not as confident in my ability to make a resin pour on something as large as the facade or the entire church for that matter. I probably need that to be professionally done. My goal is to make the entire church, at least, in 1/72 and 60mm scale. Anyway, I'm trying to get these out there and available. I suppose I'll just keep building until I can make it happen!
Thanks,
Texan

Exceptional work!!!

You are not only an amazing diorama builder, but an amazing architectural sculptor! I can't wait to see photos of the whole thing with figures and terrain!

Thank you all very much for your comments. Here are a couple of pics of the main gate and the interior of the main gate. The interpretation of the gate was designed by my friend and Alamo architectural genius Craig Covner.

Texan...

again...these are just amazing...I have seen quite a few Alamo facades in my life...yours is definitely one of the best...you are extremely talented...I'm sure you know there are factories that will cast you resin molds of your project...or foam for that matter...

your detail is unbelievable...so sharp!!!

This is pretty amazing stuff and that's a heck of an understatement. My compliments, to say the least.

Brad

I took another look at this thread. If you added some very good terrain (Ken Osen quality), I swear I could not tell the difference between your facade and the actual Alamo. The doors are incredible as well. Can you post the steps you use to make a section of wall, as well as the steps to make a door?

Wow...thanks. I do try to match it stone for stone, at least as far as the church goes. I figure if I even get close (and I haven't gone blind), then I'm doing OK. As far as posting steps on how to do it, I'm afraid I only have a couple of pics where the building is in it's "balsa foam" stage. I take photos every night when I finish work, check the fine details and then delete them. I tried to keep track at one time, but there were just too many and I rarely, if ever, referred back to them.

But, I did find one of the facade. Basically, I get a really good photo of the facade, where the sun is just right and shows every stone. Then I basically start carving or drawing the stones in with a needle. When I feel that I have all the stones in the model that are on the real deal, then I take the needle and start removing the space between the stones where the mortar and smaller stones would be. Then I shape the stones with various files, needles and dental tools. Then I do the same thing for the rest of the church walls. It's a process for sure, but its the best way I found so far that works. Not sure if this pic will show exactly what I'm talking about, but it's all I've got.

Re: the doors. I assume you meant the doors of the main gate. Unfortunately, I don't have any raw photos of the those either. But all it is, is layered styrene strips. Before I bond them together, I use sand paper to give it a wood grain finish and if they need a little "battle damage" I just hit them in spots with the dremel. I actually enjoy making the workwork as much as sculpting the stones. Anyway, I'm sorry this wasn't much help. I'll try to do a better job of keeping the "in process photos"!

Thanks again for all of the kind words....I really do appreciate them.

Texan...did you personally carve out your pillars and archway to make the resin molds...they are so intricate...and they were carved out of styrene...do you mean foam (pink board)?

the bricks look fantastic...it sounds like quite a process...

Thank you, sir!

The columns or pillars were constructed from styrene plastic strips (half round). I did the artwork for the doors and my friend did the artwork for the arched niches. I had those laser engraved and then made molds and resin castings. Most of the sections on the facade that look like molding or sculpted stone, are done with layering styrene and then making resin castings. The columns are without a doubt the toughest part of the facade to make. I only make two, and I've spent well over a week in some instances!

Excellent work. You have to keep it up. You must send in pics of the completed set with figures added and not wait several years.

This is fantastic work IMO.This must truly be a labor of love. How long have you been working on it?I would imagine a long time.

Absolutely incredable and brilliantly done work . . . . I certianly have enjoyed viewing your photos sir . . . .

Fully concur with my fellow froggers-a stunning work of art and very professionally executed. Very well done sir-I salute you.

Hi All,

I'm coming close to completing my 1/72 scale Alamo model and thought I would share some of the pics. I hope you enjoy them.
