All Quiet On The Western Front (1 Viewer)

I personally thought it was really good. I was mesmerized throughout it. I think it’s been so long since I read the book or saw more true to the book movies that it was a new and powerful experience for me.

Also makes me want to go back and read it again.

If you go back and read the book or see the original movie, you’ll see that this version is not very good. Now, if it gets people to go read the book, then it won’t have been a total loss.

It's what the hipsters call a "reimaging" of the book. I suppose it would be somewhat pointless to simply remake the book's plot since that has already been done but the lack of character development and changes made seemed completely random. No story arc. Along the lines of what you mentioned, however, I did start rereading the book and didn't even realize that the author wrote a sequel "The Road Back" involving the post war years.

The Road Back was also made into a movie, in 1937, which featured Slim Summerville as Tjaden from the original book/movie. Nowhere near as memorable as AQotWF, but it does exist. -- Al

Nominated for best picture. LOL. Not a great year for the movies.

Interesting. Having re-watched it a few times, I haven't changed my original thoughts...a terrifically realistic and gritty version that strives to drive home that the war itself is the main feature of the movie to the complete detriment of character development. A good movie, not a great one. I rank it third out of the three versions. -- Al

With all the modern tech this version is in my humble opinion not as good as the original. But are the Germans good at making films? They do not have a movie making heritage. For me Kubrick’s ‘ Paths of Glory’ remains about the best WW1 film. It far better conveys the hypocrisy and futility and the end as the whole lives in the mind years after in a way that this gory TV movie will not. You need a great script great actors and a great director.

If you’re talking a movie making heritage in the general sense, they do have a heritage. Just off the top of my head, Blue Angel comes to mind. Then there are movies by Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders. If you’re talking WWI two movies, admittedly old but classics, come to mind, Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft.

the Herman’s have made a lot of good films over the years but the leading lights of their film industry are a minority and you are mentioning but a few compare that with all the American films that are more of a reflection of their public opinion all be it somewhat jingoistic. A lot of the old German films have curiosity value. I think America has contributed more to cinema than any other nation.

.... But are the Germans good at making films? ....

The German film industry existed long before Hollywood. Search for Babelsberg Film Studio near Potsdam. Prior to WWII thousands of German film professionals emigrated to escape Nazi influence. Of course many stayed and Joseph Goebbels used film to spread Nazi ideology and aid the war effort.

For the Napoleonic fans, International Historical Films in Chicago sells the restored end of war Nazi period epic Kolberg. Ignoring the 'subtle' propaganda, it is a remarkable film. Check out the extensive archive of world cinema at https://ihffilm.com/info.html

My favourite WWII themed German film - the original 1950s Die Brücke which truly captures the futility/stupidity of war.

"Narvik" on Netflix is not bad. A bit fanciful, though.

It’s not a question of whether Americans have contributed more or not but whether the Germans have made good films and they clearly have. The rest of your statement I don’t understand.

Woke has destroyed the movie/tv industry.
Mark

I tend to agree, no one wants to be seen to 'offend' these days, other than some well known comedians.

I recall the debate about Wing Commander Guy Gibsons black Labrador dog called 'nigger' and the wokeness about referring to the dog and how his name could offend.......lets just forget history, better still rewrite it.

I also remember how some members on here became upset some years ago about others using the term 'Jap' in their posts even when it was being used in context to the subject being highlighted.

I refuse to abide by this PC nonsense.....whatever happened to 'sticks and stones' and common sense?

Folks should just ignore the title and and not compare it to the book. Just view it as a standalone unique WW1 movie. It was pretty darn good for that. Many great visceral scenes. Best WW1 combat scenes I've ever seen. I really enjoyed it, except for the final order "charge" of the Germans, as that was a little too Hollywood hokey for me. It would have been great if they just ended it with his friends death by farm-kid. That would have been poignantly tragic and a great ending.

As it’s based on the book you can’t divorce one from the other.
