Am I not normal ? (1 Viewer)

Or i could take some of my soldiers in to display on the lunch room table.

Charlie, I really wouldn't do that if I were you

When the "what's your hobby" subject has ever come up in a work or social situation I usually just say I collect model tanks, trucks and stuff - notice that I don't mention toy soldiers. 95% of guys seem to relate to tanks and trucks as men never seem to grow up - according to my wife anyway :)

Absolutely, somehow vehicles tanks etc don't have the same 'Comedic' value as troops do.We can call them 'Collectables' 'Figures' 'Reproductions' anything we like, but to most people they will always be Toy soldiers.

I get the most crap from my brother scott. Everday he says stuff like- Your such a freak get in the present. Are you going to go play with your little toys?
He actually made fun of me for winning third in the city for Roman History and he makes Ds in History class. I've actually considerd quitting the hobby because of this persecution:(

Don't give up something you enjoy because of what others think, stick to what you like. You don't have to answer to anyone but yourself.

RE Lee

Everytime your brother picks on you - just go down to Troops of Time and relax with people who love your hobby. Big brothers can be a pain - so just ingnore and spend time with people who share your passion.

Do you live near Troops of Time in Jacksonville??

Yeah bro, definately DEFINATELY do not do that- I actually envy you- I wish I could take a summer job and have no resposibilities with my money but to restock my KC inventory.

I used to get CRUSHED when I was in the Army for my beliefs in God- Just MAULED- here I was this big, strong trooper who was not ashamed to admit he believed in God. Everyone was confused because I was so unbalanced and they never knew what I would do next- I didn't really fit the "Christian Mold"- I could/ can swear like a painter uses an art canvas and would consume large quantities of alcohol (both of these vices I have moved away from and STRONGLY STRONGLY urge you to avoid at all costs) but in the end, I always gave my self to God. And the funny thing was, a lot of these guys would have problems in dealing with the stresses of the military (not fun when your wife is alone giving birth to your first child and you are deployed hundred or thousands of miles from her) I was the one they would approach for help or counsel.

Perhaps your brother is ashamed of his academic record and is taking it out on you- rivalries between brothers are perhaps the most fierciest out there. You just stay the course and be true to who you are and you will stand tall in the end.

Troops of time is on the other side of town so I go once a month when I go to my wargaming club wich is right next to Troops of time(tim is a member to). One thing is he is not my older brother he is my triplet brother I have another besides him! What I get pounded for the most is listening to civil war music even though I mostly listen to classic rock. Don't get mauled for my faith in school because I go to a christian school. I won't become an alcholic!(to much of those in my family:eek:)

Hi Guys,

All I can say is stick to your guns Bobby Lee! My friends and Family mainly left me alone on my hobbies and such. I do know how brothers can get though as I have two and a sister but I would continue being yourself and you will be fine.

As for you Chris You would be totally amazed at how things have changed since the Army entered the two way range. You truly dont find many atheists out there and the Chaplain ususally has a full house before all major missions. Keep the faith my friend!

All the best

Dave

I also live in a so-called "Man's World" when I'm working. I make no secret of the fact that I collect toy soldiers. No-one has ever dared to try and take the piss because they know my response will be "go away you silly little man".....Only, that's not quite what I'd actually say....!!!!
I actually take more stick from my wife's friends than from workmates, but a few repeats of "go away you silly little woman" usually shuts them up and then I don't see them for weeks at a time, which suits me fine.

Out of all the people who have seen my collection its the women who are more impressed or have a bigger reaction.

Lucky you Alex. When we had our collection on display in Dubai most of the wife's friends visiting our apartment would look puzzled, scratch their heads, then start looking at me as if I'd just beamed down from the mothership. Wife would sometimes save the day (but not always) by showing off her SOHK collection.:)

Just a general comment, but to Woodenwarriors and Robert E. Lee in particular.

It takes more nerve to be what you are, then to be what someone else thinks you should be. Why waste your life playing somebody elses role ?

But to answer your original question Woodenwarrior:

No.

You are better then normal, because you have a mind and use it.

Robert E. Lee, when people put you down for having an interest, it is usually them trying to make themselves look better at your expense. Turn it around on them. You have a perfectly OK and sorta creative interest. They have vanity.

Although you don't find people with your exact interest very easily, you will find many who just as crazy about there own hobby or collections. I find those people generally understand where your coming from & do not look down at it. You can connect over certain common ground and terms like Ebay, sniping, Mint in Box, Repros, Negative feedback, etc...Alot of times they will be willing to here about your latest find, if you will listen to their stories about collecting signed refridgertor magnets or whatever.

I can aways shoot great comebacks at my brother but he never quits. e.g.- a few years ago I was a bit chubby, no I am toned and in shape(weigh below the average) and I am more muscular and slightly slimmer but he still calls me fat. yesterday I beat his pull up hanging record by 26 seconds and then he counterd by saying I was a stupid old timer pathetic civil war freak. This forum is the only place I feel comfortable with my passion(I thank you all for this). Not to say my parents aren't comforting but my mom is the type of person that belives the AWI started in 1492.:D

Thats not too bad, I met someone recently who thought the Germans were our allies in WWII. :D

I remember my mom, once asking me why I spent all my money on soldiers & why didn't I sometimes buy other things like a football, etc. I told her that I didn't want to buy a football, I wanted more Britains Knights. I also said that they were collector pieces really & would be valuable one day. Not that I didn't like playing the sport, but footballs were easy to come by, everyone (except me) having one.

I was very pleased 25 years later and she saw me selling off part of the collection to cover my own kids bills & such. I showed her a Britains mtd swoppet knight & told her the value. She understood finally I think, and I pointed out that my old friends were not getting very much for their old footballs, mainly because no one had their old footballs. :D

Chris is presently extremely busy and doesn't have time to post at the moment. I know he does occasionally take the time to check out the forum. Don't worry. "He'll Be Back". :)

Having knowledge of History and a Understanding of World Events makes us better than Normal in my book.

Of course having some wonderful Toy Soldiers doesnt hurt either ! ;)

Yeah, coming from a fellow highschooler, just stick to your interests, and forget what other people say. In the end, if they're worth anything, they'll respect you for sticking to what you like regardless of what is said (or else they'll just quit bringing it up).

As far as history goes, it ticks me off that so few people care or can see how history relates. My view is that in a democracy, everybody should understand history so that they can make intellegent decisions at the polls. (One way to counter this problem would be just to make me a dictator...:D)

But anyway, as far as being normal, I consider myself normal--granted, no one else at my school shares a dual interest in toy soldiers and history, but they've all got their own little passions, too. (Mine is just more A: lucrative, and B: useful).

Since everyone else has commented I guess I will throw my 2 cents worth in too........First off I too fish, camp and boat.....I also collect real antique weapons and collectibles from the Napoleonic period as well as toy soldiers....and on top of that I am a Police Ofiicer. Not only do I get bugged about toy soldiers but my antiques as well....I can handle that.....JUST DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF TELLING THEM HOW MUCH THEY COST THEN YOU WILL REALLY BE BUGGED. In the end of it al...l who cares..... these hobbies ground me and relax me.

I reckon as long as no-one gives you a wedgie then you are OK:):)
