Displaying collections is always an issue with space, competing interests for housespace ( insert wife & kids ), pets, proper cases/cabinetry etc. I've had some requests from forum members to display my collection however I have a serious problem, perhaps others share this concern and can provide me an answer to lead my K&C collection to victory over an undefeatable force.
This undefeatable force has the power and salivates at the opportunity to completely and indiscriminately destroy, break, defeat, maim, and wipe out expensive K&C collections on a whim. I'm talking about a force that has been around since the beginning of mankind. Ofcourse I'm talking about two toddlers under five!
What's a collector to do? My troops are poised, ready to spring out of their boxes, they're just waiting for the opportunity to strike. My troopers are building up and anticipating their D-Day, but like Eisenhower I'm waiting for conditions to improve before my invasion can start.........my troops are getting restless.;)

Hello field marshal, i had the same problem and at about three i let them hold figures, set them up, taught them never to hold more than one at a time and instilled a complete sense of how fragile and priceless these figures are. One funny thing that happened when i was at work is that my 4 yr old shannon was looking at my frontline crimean collection when i was not home and thought she broke lord raglan because he was missing an arm. Well having installed the fear of god in them if one broke she threw him out. A couple of days later i noticed a riderless horse . An investigation ensued but i was to late, the trash had been thrown out. I have since replaced lord raglan but a valuable lesson was learned. Anyhow i would advise a lot of early traing. Good luck and have fun

CFM,
I have a 7 and 9 year old...and had a NBA regulation ball at full recommended psi come down directly on a diorama about a year ago:(. Funny thing is, the ball must have had an immaculate self propelled bounce, since nobody claimed they threw the ball. I now pray and give regards to that ball every morning since Jesus resides inside it!

If my wife and I have kids I'll keep everything in boxes and then bring out a few items to display on my desk in the evening in my office at home and then put it away before going to bed.

I currently keep a small dio at work on top of a bookcase. Each month or two I rotate different items in my collection.

I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old (15 months actually) and they only have access to the museum (which I keep locked) in my presence. I have instilled in the 3 year old son the concepts of "one at a time" and "gently". My little girl wants to touch everything, but I hold her back and say "no no no" a lot. So far, virtually no casualties of this war, but every time we are up there, I hold my breath . . . :p

I know a collector who lets his 5 year old "play" with his WWII items. However for a 5 year old he is way ahead of his years and has been fully briefed by his Dad.
Regards
Brett

I also had the same fears with my daughter and son (now 7 and 6) but my armies never endured casualties... so far.
Since they are 4, they even 'help' me to unpack newly received soldiers, move displays from one shef to another ....(one at the time, do not hold them by the bayonet , gentle handling...)... No I'm sure I won't die from an heart attack, my heart has been tested and passed the test :)

If they really want to play with soldiers I've recently purchased some Walkerloo soldiers (there is a related thread on the forum). So they (and I) can have fun with soldiers and marbles.

BTW, no basket ball is allowed in the house :)

Hi
I had a good one yesterday. My 11 month old basset got hold of one of the K/C boxs and put a beating on it.Then his eyes turn to my work bench and got hold of one of the plastic French Dragoons I was working on.MY BASSET "TANK"THEN RAN INTO A WAR.He is no longer aloud into the basement. So I don`t know my kids have no interest in soldiers but my 3 dogs do.
Cheers
Dave

The Face of EVIL !

You made me chuckle this morning Ron with this picture :D I no longer have to worry about the ways of children, mine are all grown up and raising their own now. However, I have a cat that likes to be in the middle of everything I am doing, especially when I am enjoying my collection  "CJ" looks alot like your "Max". By the way, "CJ" is short for "Calamity Jane" and she was appropriately named for her personality
In fact, she is sitting on my left shoulde right now as I type this.

I learned my lesson many years ago. I had all the origional Kenner Star Wars figures, in the packages, on shelves in xtra bedroom. My oldest daughter was 5 at the time and was home sick. My wife let her play with them, when I got home from work.... AAAHHHHHHHH. When we had our den redone, I had a seperate room built with a dead-bolt on the door. Problem solved.
