Are we tired of ACW Ironclads Yet? (1 Viewer)

This is my turret..made from a 4" plastic fitting. A floor was put in and wood strips glued down, then painted oak color. The guns were bought from Ebay..They had longer barrels, but I needed to cut them down to fit..Iron plate is painted gloss black ,then dry brushed gunmetal silver..Michael

The grated top to the turret is a strainer piece that naturally inserts into these fittings..Michael

It's shaping up nicely, Michael! I'm impressed with your scratchbuilding instincts!

Can I convince you to bring this out to the MFCA show in May and display it? It would be great to see the finished piece in person (and encourage others, too).

Prost!
Brad

MICHEAL....I have been watching this forum looking at you building your ironclads they are beautifull works of art. your ideas are great like doing that turret for the 2 guns just great. i hope you show it when you are finished. thank you for showing how you go about it. thanks again.

The next photos show the mostly finished hull. It was made from a 2" x 6" board cut at about 28"..The hump was created from slanted molding glued back edge to edge. The bucket look was created from a plastic bowl turned over and planked in with wood strips..Do not get attached to these images though, as I am working on a new and improved hull, even as I type..Will show you step by step in a day or so..Michael

This is the finished ship, but THE PROJECT is not really finished, as I am building a new hull, that more closely resembles the real ship..Michael

I have been working on a new hull for the Osage...The hull base will be lower to the ground and about 61/2" wide. ( near 1" wider than my first ). I found rounded base molding ,when put on either side of a 1" furring strip creates a near perfect " hump " for the deck..Note hole cut out for turret.Michael

The forward hull was improved by using cut wedges of the same molding and fill in the joints with wood putty. The area was then sanded down for smoothness. A bow shield was then added by using 2 thin basswood strips and gluing them together front strip first to hull then inner strip..Michael

Thanks for the link. I have never visited this site before and really learned a thing or 2 about real modeling...Michael

Michael my friend real modeling is what you do. Making things from scratch. I did not check the other link yet. Real modeling starts with research and making things to put together. Says so in the scriptures.:D So I started to read this from the beginning to inspire me to complete latest side wheeler. Started some time ago.

These were on sale at last Saturdays London show.

Jeff, what scale do you think and what cost in U.S. bucks? Michael

Michael,

The nearest one was about 3 foot long and cost £200 or about $320, the others were priced at £175 or around $280.

If my 2 footers can look right with 54mm, then that 3 footer would fit in fine..Had I seen these ( actually, had I visited England ), I would have bought that Eads Ironclad ( 1st. one ) and figured out shipping later:D..Michael
