The Germans believe it or not made a curved barrel for the STG 44 to give to ground troops on the Eastern Front to protect tanks like the Wespe with no armor in the back. The troops would sit there in the back of the tank and when the russians started to swarm the tank they would curve the barrel and stick it around the side and hose the tank down with bullets! Pretty neat.:)

An open hatch could not be ruled out as I have read several first hand accounts saying that the German commanders were more likely than other nationalities to stick their head out for a better view of the battle around them.

Good point, you'd have to be up and on that tank in a flash though wouldn't you!.The German Tanks also had metal plugs in the turret didn't they, that they could push out and stick an MP40 or Pistol out of to discourage visitors?.(Pistol Ports???)

True, but the German open hatch policy was mainly used in tank v tank situations in open country. They would have been much more careful in urban areas because of the risk from overhead attacks from high buildings, especially if they believed enemy infantry were closeby. And don't forget that tanks usually operated in groups, partly to allow neighboring tanks to hose off pesky enemy 'tank riders'.

Yes indeed. It must have been nerve wracking to be on top of one of these monsters whilst it was moving knowing you could be 'hosed' at any time. Also for those inside the vehicle knowing there were guys on top trying to get at you.

Hopefully Andy will do a "village" based series on Arnhem, because he's been making loads of diorama pieces lately.

Yes these new Diorama pieces are very good,I hope we see some more for Arnhem and D Day.

I'd love to see some figures of Major Julian Cook and the troopers of 3/504 making their boat assault across the Waal River.

I can't wait for more Arnhem stuff, Don't think it matters what they make I know I will want it all, feel like its been a long wait since the last lot came out.
