Has anyone seen this?I've heard it's the greatest movie ever made or just a so so movie with good special effects.Any opinions out there?

I haven't seen it yet but heard good reviews about it. I am thinking to take my boys to watch it this week...Will let you know of my feedback then.

I saw it this weekend at an IMAC theatre in NYC. Make sure you can see it in 3D!
Really amazing technology that will change movie making in the future.
Story line is "ok" but the special effects are absolutely awesome!
Also appropriate for younger children over 7 or 8 I think.

Gentle Friends,

I just returned from seeing Avatar and it is a wonderful movie. I agree with nysoldiers, the story line is fine, but not particularly unusual or innovative. However, the special effects are terrific and well worth the price of the movie. I was both spellbound and captivated by the culture of the indigenous population and by the creative presentation of the environment. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys science fiction. I further agree with nysoldiers, it is a fine movie for viewers eight or more years of age.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Just saw it with my 2 boys in IMAX 3D...Wow! This is simply the best movie I have seen in a long time. Not only the special effects are stunning but 3D IMAX really literally gives another dimension to the action especially for the aerial scenes. I found the story line pretty good overall. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to escape this world for a little while :)

I took my son and grandson to see Avatar last week while they were here visiting for the Christmas Holiday. We all agreed that its a "must see" movie. Its absolutely incredible and as mentioned by others it should be seen at a 3D theater.

Hi,
Most people do not focus on the technical awards during the Oscar broadcast. But Avatar proves that special effects wizards are also artists. It is such a great achievement.

Those guys are fantastic.

saw it xmas day with my wife and friends. interestingly, you had your choice of viewing. $8 for 2d version or $12 w/glasses for 3d version. saw it in 3d, and even my wife who hates sci-fi, fantasy, action, etc. was enthralled with the film. one of my daughters saw it on imax 3d and said some people were getting sick. if you get a chance, watch the making of the movie on the Fox movie channel or its also on Utube. pretty incredible stuff.

I saw this yesterday in IMAX 3D and it is amazing. The acting is very good and although it's not an original story line (Dances with Wolves comes to mind), it is beautifully conceived, executed and filmed and you cannot help to be enthralled. It must have been very expensive to make but based on the crowds, it will do very well, not only no but in DVD sales, when that comes out. I will want to buy it and I'm sure it will boost the sale of Bluray players.

We saw this as well, just before Xmas we saw the Christmas carol in 3D, we commented on how far animation had come, so lifelike. But Avatar is really an amazing step beyond any of the animation I've seen, you really have to remind yourself that the natives and nearly every outdoor scenes, all the vehicles from helos to Giant walkers and Dinos only exist in a computer!
I have no doubt that the line between reality and the cyber world will blur/merge in the near future.

I took my family to see it in 3d and everyone loved it but me.I liked it allot but found it long and a bit goodie goodie for me. I liked the idea of the human race as being bastards and found this part of the movie as true to life.Great effects and will buy on dvd but a little shallow.Simmo.

With all the 3D movies coming out and with Cameron's ground breaking camera technology,I think the next generation of tv's will have 3D capability. You won't have to sit there with those glasses on.Give it 5-10 years.

it is an unfortunate fact that Hollywood must appeal to the most base instinct, from a survival stand point, good vs. evil. the story is simplistic at best, unfortunately so are most the viewers, all be it because of there youth in most cases. If you get too complex you reduce the audience size significantly and with a budget this size it doesn't take a genius to figure out it's a losing proposition if you don't keep it simple.

saw avatar, and when jake learned to fly, I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I was thinking thank you lord for letting me live long enough to see this movie!

I've seen it this week, 3D version. It's an OK action movie, with fantastic special effects, imagery, scenarios. The story is not that original though (except for the Avatar concept itself), and it sometimes sounds very childish (once again...) but I really wasn´t thinking it would be another «2001-A space Odissey» or something, neither were James Cameron or any of the producers...:D I felt there is a moment in the movie when a different more peaceful solution might have been a possibility and an original one at that, but the writers decided to pursue the usual gung-ho violent stuff... Parts of the story and images pick on Old West and Vietnam (like the mounted «Indians» or those very Nam choppers)... Overall a must see movie, but especially because of the visual concepts, no Clint Eastwoods, Scorceses or even Spielbergs here... 3 out of 5.

Actually I don't think it would be that long. Cameron is planning on releasing a 3D version to coincide with the availability of the hardware by the end of next year.;)

I knew it was coming, just not quite that quick.

I disagree about the peaceful solution because we have seen where indigenous cultures were decimated by the advancing white men. This was a movie where the native population actually wins. I found that to be good and refreshing. The sad thing is we know that's not always really true.

Just got back from watching the 3D version.
A most pleasant experience. Since it has been a few years since the last time I went to a movie theatre, the technology and views shown were simply breathtaking for me.

Color me puzzled. A fantasy movie where WE are the bad guys and we LOSE to the natives is GOOD and its SAD and "nonrefreshing" that we dont lose more in real life? huh?

So sorry, but I couldnt divorce myself from the underlying message of this movie, which is that WESTERN/MODERN civilization is a greedy, amoral and an unjust culture at its core. Meanwhile "indigenous" cultures are shown as inherently more natural, peaceful, loving and purely benevolent. The message of the movie, basically, is that nazi supremicist values were and are the raw embodiment of modern US civilzation/capitalism in which wealth, science and military power take precedence over all else.

Pardon me of I dont share, at all, this grossly simplistic and negative view of oursevles.

I know, I know, its only a movie. But still, demonizing the culture and system which made the magnificent technology that allowed its creation possible is bizarre to me. It seems to me that if we dont go forward the only other direction is backwards.
