First signing (not officially announced, but apparently a done deal)- The Orioles have a 3 year contract with Dan Duquette to be their President of Baseball Operations. Whoopee! Not real exciting, but it is important to the O's.:redface2: Now waiting for the free-agent signings... -- Al

Phillies had also signed Jim Thome last week. It's sort of a curious signing since he's more of a First Baseman/unless they're worried that Ryan Howard did some serious damage in the last game of the NLCS.

Terrible situation in Venezuela where National's catcher Wilson Ramos was kidnapped at gunpoint. No contact with the kidnappers yet. How can this end well? There are the makings of a real tragedy here. -- Al

Still no movement on this story. -- Al

Sounds like they just found Wilson Ramos. Not a lot of details yet, but it appears he was rescued by local forces.

Sounds like the Phils also picked up Jonathan Papelbon to add to their rotation. Looks like 4 years, $50 million. Can he spare some for me? Just a couple grand would be fine......^&grin

In a few short years they've become one of the top franchises in the game with a great ballpark that is always sold out. Shows what you can do when you have money and excellent management. Many teams have money but a lack of vision when it comes to management. The Mets -- sadly -- come to mind.

Thank goodness. This news was breaking just as I went to bed. He was rescued by police commando operation, found deep in the countryside. Very happy this turned out well. -- Al

Have not heard this one. The rich get richer. Th man blows ONE game and off he goes. Could be Boston will regret this. I also see where Pujols is flirting with the "Miami" Marlins. That has to be a no go. -- Al

50 million for a closer? No regrets on this end, not for a guy who has one pitch (fastball) and who stunk on ice in 2010 but was very good last year until September.

Contract year + plus the chance to make millions = maximum effort.

He said clearly last year he was going to explore his options and not resign with Boston.

The Phillies are throwing money around like the Yankees and the Red Sox and have exactly one WS title to show for it, that via a win over the Doofin Rays..................I see where they also signed Thome as Howard is going to be out awhile with a blown out achilles heel.................how old is Thome, 212?

So who's the BoSox closer?

As I mentioned above, Phillies are big time now. Think they've joined teams like Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, etc. as an elite team.

They have plenty of options; Bard is one of them, plus they signed the former White Sox closer Jenks last year too.

Have to give the Phillies credit; the last two NL champions went through them in the playoffs and both of them won the World Series, the Giants and the Cardinals, my second and third favorite teams in MLB behind the Red Sox.

Bard blew how many big leads in big games from the 7th and 8th innings last year? The guy has been very hittable and choke ready since the RS brought him up...And Jenks yesterday, as closer? Fried chicken and beer to RS management, oh, wait a minute there isn't any..the food or management left! Michael

I wouldn't have too much confidence in those two. Perhaps the BoSox closer is yet to found -- or signed.

The Red Sox bullpen had a ton of injuries last year, Francona overused Bard till his arm practially fell off, he's got great stuff regardless.

Jenks was hurt last year with a bad back, we'll see how he does this year.

The Yankees season lasted a whole 7 days longer than the Red Sox season did, so relax.

Maybe, we'll see.

Brad, did you get a chance to go to the Billy Joel concert at Shea back in 2008, just watched a Showtime program on it, pretty amazing, Sir Paul closed down the building with "Let it be".......wow.

No, but I have a DVD of the concert McCartney did when they opened that dump otherwise known as Citifield.

That's funny because on the program Strawberry said Shea was a dump, but it was OUR dump.............turns out the employee who drove the Beatles off of the field after their concert at Shea in the 60's also was the guy who drove McCartney down the tunnel to the stage at this concert, pretty nice circle of life there.......

Shea was old and needed to be replaced but the Wilpons did a terrible job -- gee, what else is new -- with Citifield. They had a chance to build something grand, like Citizens Bank where the Phillies play, but blew it.

The Phillies have themselves a great staduim with a team to match, pitchingwise anyway.

I also like the Giants and Cardinals ballparks too...........
